They do beat the poo poo out of you even in short sprint races. Endurance races are really brutal. If there was a track within four hours I'd have one, they're great for off season training and great fun.

There's a really nice track about an hour away, but as a 40-something year old in not great shape, I had a lot of difficulty with getting it started and then getting into it without stalling on my own. Then there was the getting the poo poo beat out of me part. If I had it to do over again, I'd have gotten one of those non-shifter karts with the electric start, I probably would have had a lot more fun with that, and maybe still have it, who knows.

I bought a two stroke back in spring since there is a track about 40 minutes away. They're a blast but yeah unless you're in prime physical condition karting takes a huge toll on your body, there was a good six weeks where I was sleeping on my right side because the left side of my ribs were bruised up, never stopped me from getting in though. Also as I found out maintenance is a bitch and I'm definitely going to have to keep a closer eye on everything next year.

^^^You broke your ribs. Bruised ribs heal in 2-3 weeks. Breaks heal in 6-8. Very common if you weren't using a rib protector (carbon/plastic shelled vest worn under your suit). Karts will pull a sustained ~2g on flat ground with peaks and spikes to ~4g. More than enough to bruise/break ribs. I raced outdoor karts for 3 years as a teenager. 18 months in a single speed, 18 months in a ~31hp 125cc shifter. I've driven LS-powered Miatas and raced a 350whp sub-2000lb Miata, and the shifter kart still feels faster. It is so abusive and so physically demanding to drive that you are completely exhausted after ~15 minutes. "Long" races are 20 minutes. If you aren't in good shape, god help you.

There's a local guy slowly building a track for karts, motards and drifting. Right now they run the$100 6.5hp Harbor Freight engine in whatever chassis they can find cheap on craigslist. Not that fast but still a lot of fun. Once he's more setup I'll probably start shopping for a race kart.

I won't lie, after the last Roadkill I sprung for the MT website and believe you me, it's a buggy mess. Really cool poo poo on there, though. All kinds of races, old films, old TV stuff and all the MT content. It might not be worth it now but it looks like MT is well on the way to having an online version of the old (badass) Speed Channel. Hell, it's almost Speedvision at this point.

I'm with you on the "too much abuse" angle. I've done them at Bondurant twice and while they're a shitload of fun... they're too fast for me to keep up with mentally. That's the track I ran them on. You should be somewhere around WOT at the green dot, banging up all the way to sixth gear down that straightaway across the top. The earliest you should be on the brakes for the second-gear first turn with the yellow dot, is around that red dot.

I did the shifter-kart experience at Bondurant, but it was before they re-did the kart track, and I don't really remember how it was laid out, but yea, they are just insanely hard to keep ahead of mentally. I did alright with that on the road courses (I mostly ran it up in north Phoenix at the PKRA track), but I mostly bought it for autocross, and I never did really keep ahead of the kart on an autocross course, it's just so crazy fast compared to well.. anything. This is me showing my amazing driving skill with a shifter-kart down in Tucson (before they ran at Marana). Probably in 2007 or 2008 at a guess. Cones are big and painful on a shifter-kart.
