He was pretty evenhanded in his comments, except when his warboner snuck in. Chuck Todd didn't really press him on the gun control issue, but he did get Graham to say that increased background checks are a good idea

Aren't background checks right now just forms that sit untouched in a queue until a time limit is reached, and then the person is allowed to purchase the gun regardless? Isn't that how Dylann Roof legally got his despite being barred from such?

Of course he'd be for an increase in background checks, it would only lower the chances of a criminal being prevented from getting a gun with the current system

This alternate universe would also mean a dem senate, house, and majority of the state legislators, with a gerrymandered lock on all appropriate levels.

In this reality the Tea Party never happened, John Huntsman served two-terms after the 8-year disaster of Jesse Jackson's presidency. Critics point to the decisive factors in the 2008 election being a massive economic recession attributed to financial over-regulation, Hillary Clinton's choice of Jill Stein as a running mate, and war weariness over America's then 5-year long occupation of Israel.

The Nastier Nate posted:

But, let's be realistic about where this nomination process is going. The dreams of a brokered convention, or actively stealing the nomination from Trump aren't going to happen. Maybe if the popular vote is close they can fudge the delegates, but if he dominates in a 2-1 lead in most states, then it's decided.

The establishment and business wing of the GOP wants Bush, but obviously that's not going to happen so Rubio is their next choice. Cruz is only marginally more accepted than Trump by them and the moderate northeast republicans, and Cruz has gladly positioned himself to be Trump's Millhouse should the votes swing that way. He's only 44, he's got plenty of time. All other attempts to stump the Trump (Bush, Fiorinia, Carson, Kasich's money laundered ads) have failed miserably. Rubio is up to bat now and his best chance is for a bunch of other candidates to drop out, and their supporters to look at Rubio and shrug their shoulders and say "ehhh....ok".

If we assume that doesn't happen and Trump comes out of this with a narrow win in Iowa and a commanding lead in NH and SC (which the past 4 months of polling have claimed) then we can call it a day and Trump can start pivoting toward the center to try and peel off Hillary voters and repair the damage he's done during the primary.
Republicans WILL rally around Trump, they'll call him the next Ronny Reagan, the future of the republican party, whatever bullshit they need to say to maintain the illusion of party unity. The stakes are too high to risk alienating Trump supporters. If they even lose a fraction of the base to apathy or spite, then 8 years of Hillary are guaranteed and we start seeing down tickets in swing states taking a hit. Trump has the GOPs' balls in a vice grip and they know it.

In conclusion, there will be no GOP civil war, they will grit their teeth and publicly support Trump while preparing for the eventual loss in the general.
This... sounds somewhat plausible, and I could see it happening.

Congratulations, you just articulated a plausible path to Republican Nominee Trump. That is loving terrifying, nice work.:stare:

What makes it especially dumb is that Hamas has a pretty simple pronunciation. It's not like someone asked him to talk about one of the eight-syllable FSA groups in Syria or even Ahrar al-Sham or something. It's "Ha-mas"; two syllables, five letters.

What I'm saying here is that leading in the polls is less impressive when you can't break 35% within your own party.

I was briefly worried when he appeared to be coming up on 40%, but that turned out to be a mistake or something?

Living in a hateful world sending me straight to Heaven
Sheldon Adelson wants to Support Marco Rubio But His Wife Wants to Support Ted Cruz

quote:

After being wooed by virtually all the major GOP contenders, the 82-year-old Adelson was believed to be close to announcing his backing of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio shortly after the Dec. 15 Republican debate — an event that, conveniently enough, is being held at the Venetian Las Vegas, a hotel Adelson owns.

That scenario, however, has run into resistance from a surprising source: Miriam Adelson, the megadonor’s strong-willed and equally hawkish wife. An Israeli-born physician, Miriam Adelson has become enamored of late with Ted Cruz, according to four Republican sources close to the couple. The Texas senator has impressed her with his unwavering toughness on national security issues, especially his support for Israel, the issue that the couple cares most passionately about.

“He really likes Marco, but she really likes Cruz — and it’s a standoff,” said one well-placed Republican fundraiser familiar with Adelson family dynamics.

edit: that hypothetical can obviously be nitpicked but i think if it was the republican nomination that was boring with a clear front-runner and one serious challenger and the democratic one that was a shitshow with fourteen candidates there would still be a general overhyping of the interesting plurality-in-a-field-of-fourteen leader's chances in the general election
