douthat's not very sensible; his brand of godbothering and moralizing is just less anti-intellectual than most. there's tons of middle ground between shaking people down for their guns and gun show loophole, you can put all sorts of restrictions on what guns get sold new by manufacturers, you can pass liability laws that impose civil or criminal penalties for irresponsibility (i.e. leaving your gun out where a kid or dog or w/e can get it), you can hold a gun seller liable if they do not perform 'reasonable' levels of scrutiny on a customer if that turns out to be a straw purchase etc.

Obama's recommendations for Congress: 1. No guns for individuals on the "No Fly List" 2. Prohibition on high caliber weapons 3. Stronger screening for individuals who come to U.S. without visa 4. AUMF for a war against ISIS Only one of those is going to happen.
