And you just loving smirked at me and that lil hog until I banked the shot like an MLG pro.

I like the look of those Rapiers, but there are a lot of good alternatives for them. One dude in my group has these coming in, and Hencoe uses those Mantic Gun Platform things to drop Shatter Charges all day, everyday. Also, if we ever make it down the coast to your area, we'll just skip the playing and see who takes a pewter Bloodthirster to the dome first.

By the way, what the hell is up with availability on FW for Volkite? I want to make some Alpha Legion Terminators, but the lack of Volkite is really chapping my rear end. I looked into alternative weapons, but nothing really fits what I need. It's more than just the chargers - everything Volkite seems to be slowly going out of stock.

So a bunch of mates and I have jumped head first into 30k. We are all building Zone Mortalis boards because its fun has hell to play and currently slow growing our forces as we go. We all grabbed Calth boxes and chose our respective legions. I foolishly picked Night Lords because ADB's stories are great and I like the idea of underhanded Marines. I haven't had much experience with painting free hand stuff like Lightning etc, so these guys are really my first go at it.

The Terminators and the Dread still have heaps of work to go on them, but I am just trying to push out a 1000pt ZM force for a big game on friday on a huge custom built board.

Helm is from a random bits box I got off a guy in a trade, so have no idea what set or model it comes from. Chainglaives are all converted from Grey Knight Force weapons and the chaos space marine close combat sprue chainswords. Waiting on an order of Vulkite Charges and FW helms and shoulders to arrive before doing the other 20 marines I need for 3 terror squads.

SteelMentor, what recipe did you use for your golds on your Alpha Legion? I tried Brass Scorpion + Auric Gold + Sepia wash but it ended up more bronze than gold. Also, get PMs it's a cool feature.

Here's the in progress Alpha Legion alpha model, following SteelMentor's recipe:

The colors have turned out well. I learned that I need to control the glaze better on future models. It's pretty easy to let it get messy and go for speed. Also, glaze is scary. The colors look a lot brighter and neon before they dry. The glazes also show your shading well, so if the underlying paint isn't well done it'll still look odd after the glaze. So next model needs to be done with more care.

I want the gold to be a bit brighter and not quite as bronze.

I'll do another in silver trim and see which I like more. I think that the silver might do a better job of adding contrast. The bronze is neat, but a bit dark and I think that a unit this way might look a little too dark.

Silver trims all the way baby, golds clash a little with the cold blues imo. Glazes take a whole lot of getting used to, I'm still learning how to keep my Alphas consistant, but it's such a welcome change of pace from my typical method of painting Space Barbies. Also, probably will invest in PM's after xmas and the inevitable Forge World binge spend.

In other news I'm off to play my first proper Heresy Ham Slam today. 2000pts against Thousand Sons using a heavily proxied Taghmata force. Opponent came off like a bit of a cheese-monger, but he's never played Mechanicum before so hopefully I can use that against him and Plasma-Fusil the poo poo out of his Marines.

So although I decided to hold off on BaC for a few months until the next heresy books are released I decided to pick up a copy of the actual game (minus models) of ebay because I heard it was a decent game.

So last night before we went out we played a trial game of the first mission.

You know what, that's a suprisingly good game they came up with there.

It went right to the wire with a Word bearers win only prevented by a heroic (and gets hot suiciding) plasma pistol shot from the Ultramarines sergeant which led to a narrow Ultramarine victory. The second mission played equally well.

The special dice and the critical effects and the command cards sync together really well, to the point I'd genuinely be interested in seeing an expansion in the future. We were already brainstorming new unit rules down the pub afterwards.

I sort of like the fact that the plasma gun meltdown is tied into the critical effect - basically if you crit, you get to roll a poo poo-ton of extra damage dice, but if too many of those extra dice are hits the gun cooks off and kills you. Sort of balms the loss when both the shooter AND the target typically end up a smoldering crater.

I think our group might have been playing 30k wrong:

Only troops (and a few choice units) score. Even less have obsec and it doesn't confer to transports. Does this mean that you can't contest objectives with anything besides troops? In other words, if a tactical squad is standing around an objective and an enemy walks up, technically the objective is still secured unless this other unit was also scoring or could contest (a few rare units like Robots can contest, but not score).

ObSec isn't a thing, while the troops can score other units by it can prevent you claiming the objective until they move or get murdered.
