That's what I'm planning on doing. From what I understand, there's a choice at the end of each chapter that more or less gives you the option of continuing the main route or branching off to that particular girl's route. If this is the case, I'll just create a save file at each of those choices and finish the girl's route before continuing on.

If the writing/plot of this game stays consistent, I would probably rate it as the second best visual novel I've played, behind Steins;Gate (I'm not counting stuff like the Zero Escape series, since I'm not really sure how to compare it with more traditional visual novels). F/SN and the Muv-Luv games are extremely entertaining and have some very high highs, but Steins;Gate and G-Senjou no Maou have felt more consistent (I would be very hesitant to recommend F/SN or Muv-Luv to someone not already acquainted with common anime tropes, while I would feel more comfortable recommending Steins;Gate/G-Senjou).

Speaking of Steins;Gate, I was wondering recently about why I enjoyed its romance. I almost never find romance in anime or visual novels compelling, so I was wondering why I felt different about the Okabe/Kurisu one. I think the reason is that, unlike most games/shows, Kurisu plays a very active role in the plot and supports you (both in actions and emotionally) throughout the game. Usually protagonists just save/help the heroines in some way, but it's almost the opposite with Kurisu. So rather than the protagonist just randomly being/falling in love with the heroine, there are actual reasons why he would start to feel that way. It also helps that Okabe isn't just a blank slate for the reader to project themselves onto, as is usually the case with these things.

Yes, but only the first two are obvious; you're likely to miss the branch in chapter 4 if you don't know what you're looking for. As I recall the choice is (disclaimer: this is from an old fan translation):

Call the police leads to the branch.
Wait for Tokita stays on the main route.

You might want to watch some live action Japanese dramas. At the very least they'd be accurate in terms of the way the people and buildings look. Something like Nobuta wo Produce comes to mind (I haven't watched any in a long time so I only know of stuff from the mid-2000s or earlier).

Voices have only ever appeared on console releases of Higurashi, even in Japan. Those have always been strictly PS2 or PS3 additions that people would patch in later. To release it on Steam with voices MangaGamer would have to pay exorbitant licensing fees presumably.

I can't believe I've missed this thread up until now. I studied Japanese years ago and I played a fair amount of VNs back then, the last one I played was Clannad back when it came out iirc so I've been missing out on newer VNs like Steins; Gate and Higurashi.

I'll try to give some short reviews of the VNs I played that I remember, note that it's been a long time and I've only played the Japanese version so I don't know anything about translations. Most of you have probably already played (some of) these games but bear with me.

One:

Made by some of the staff who later formed Key who made Kanon/Air/Clannad etc., it's quite similar to those titles. The protagonist is kind of a sarcastic dick in that typical Key way that I enjoy and overall it's a solid title from what I remember, but not as good as the more well known Key titles. Has the 'typical' setup of a whimsical start to get to know the characters, followed by tragedy, followed by (bitter)sweet ending that Key games and other so-called 'nakige' (= crying games) are known for. The Japanese is of medium difficulty I would say, nothing terribly technical or difficult but it uses adult language with a bit of prose. Only thing that really brings it down in my opinion is that one of the girls you can romance is 13 years old or something, I thought that was really creepy, but she's a minor character otherwise and it's easily avoidable, I suppose.

Kanon:

Key's first title, and it's pretty good overall. Definitely better than One, some of the characters really tugged at my heart strings. One of their most well known titles for good reason. It was the first VN I played so I might be a bit biased. If you've only seen the anime, in my opinion the actual game is a lot better, but that seems to generally be the case with anime based on VNs from what I've seen.

Air:

Also well regarded by most but it's probably my least favorite of the Key titles I played. None of the characters really grabbed me and the pacing is kind of whack in the main character arc towards the end. Japanese difficulty is a bit harder because there's a big part that takes place in medieval Japan where they tend to talk in a somewhat more 'Shakespearian' manner. Nothing too taxing if you take your time and look up the words you don't understand.

Clannad:

My personal favorite, it has great characters and generally good pacing. If you've never played a Key title I suggest playing either Clannad or Kanon. Except for the main arc it's also a bit more light-hearted from what I remember. I've never played its sequel because I was getting a bit tired from the 'nakige' formula at that point and also because Key decided that its sequel had to have porn again. Clannad was their first title that didn't have porn in the PC version but the Japanese PC VN crowd is absolutely awful so they put it in again, to which the main illustrator even quit. Ofcourse I could've played the console version but the entire affair left a bad taste in my mouth at the time so I never did.

Planetarian:

Incredibly short, no choices, not very indicative of Key games. I thought it was decent for what it was. I'm not sure if I remember correctly but I believe it was their first title they released that could be officially downloaded, which was fairly unique at the time for a Japanese title.

As a final note on Key titles, their main composer Shinji Orito is godlike and personally I think it's kind of a waste that his talent is only used in a fairly niche industry.

Never7:

Part of another popular series by company KID, this is the first of their 'Infinity' series and probably the weakest. Infinity games basically start out 'normal', until a bunch of really bizarre things happen that only get explained during a big plot twist about half-way through the game. They tend to be fairly 'spergy', meaning that characters can go on all sorts of tangents ranging from religion to quantum mechanics (yes, really). This makes it harder to understand than most VNs in my experience in Japanese, be prepared to look up technical terms on subjects that you might not even be familiar with in your own language. It has the most focus on dating mechanics out of the series, although it's still mostly about the big twist. Most of the characters are solid but as others have already said having to go through the game 7 times to get the full story when you already know the twist from the first time is a bit boring. It's decent overall.

Ever17:

The most popular of the series, it has the strongest story of them all. For me personally the characters weren't quite as appealing and the pacing can be really bad at times. A good title with some issues in my opinion.

Remember11:

The first of the Infinity series I played myself and my personal favorite, but I should warn you that that's a minority opinion. It has the weakest overall plot by far because the writers couldn't decide on how to wrap everything up in the end so... they didn't. Or at least not completely. Unlike the other titles it's a lot more focused on suspense with lots of ways to die or screw everyone over. It has strong characters and excellent pacing, which makes it all the more tragic when the story kind of falls apart at the end. Even though it's my favorite Infinity title I find it hard to recommend without proper warning. If you liked Ever17 you should at least try out Remember11, though.

I/O:

Although not officially part of the Infinity series it's very similar. Written and directed by Takumi Nakazawa who was the main director for the Infinity series up until 12Riven (which I've never played) that should come as no surprise. It's... kind of a mess to be honest. The characters are weak and the story has something to do with ancient Babylonian religions and MMORPGs and all kinds of crazy poo poo, but not in a good way. Unlike the other titles the main protagonist is some weak willed loser who is thoroughly unlikable, at least to me. The other characters aren't much better overall. I wouldn't say it's a terrible game but it certainly doesn't hold up to the other titles in the Infinity series.

Sorry for the long post, but that's all the VNs I can remember playing. I haven't played a VN in years, but I'm looking into good thriller/suspense titles this time (like Remember11). I haven't played Higurashi yet so I'll look into that first, but what other titles can you guys recommend to me? Japanese is no problem for me, but I don't own a Vita so it'd have to be a PC or PS3 title for now. I might buy a Vita if it has a couple of really good VNs, though.

I didn't know anything about it either, so I've been reading up on it just now and it looks like it's right up my alley. It's even by the same director (Takumi Nakazawa) as the Infinity series and it's similar in style.

I've been reading a couple of Japanese reviews and the consensus seems to be that it's an excellent VN ranking up with the likes of Steins; Gate. It doesn't seem to be as popular as Steins; Gate, but that's most likely because it was first released on the Xbox 360 as far as I can tell. It apparently has better pacing than Ever17 and unlike Remember11 everything is neatly tied up plotwise. The main plot is about an accident in a nuclear research facility, with Root A being about a rescue officer named Watase Kasasagi trying desperately to survive the fallout with 9 others who are trapped inside. Root B is about high school student Natsuhiko Tenkawa and his motley crew of moe classmates who happen to be in the facility during the disaster. Due to ~weird stuff~ he starts reliving the events of the past 6 days, so Root B is actually about what happens before the accident.

You can start with either 'root', but people recommend playing Root A first, which is heavy on the action but light on explanation compared to Root B. Interestingly enough, the game doesn't have any choices. The only way you can influence the story is through the Senses Sympathy System. Here's a screenshot to get a better idea of what it does:

All nine characters in the story are represented on a diagram called the Eneagram (enea = 9 in greek). At certain points in the story you can change your 'sense' as they call it towards one of these people. If you raise it you'll be more agreeable towards that person, if you lower it you'll be more negative. This also works towards yourself. As an example a character suggest a course of action in a dangerous situation. By raising your sense towards that person and lowering the sense towards yourself you'll end up doing what that persons asks of you. Going the other way around you do things your way. This might sound gimmicky but from what I've read this works well in practice and fits the theme of the game. It takes place in the near future (2030) where some sort of telepathy is possible.

There's also a RAM system where you can pick certain short scenarios that influence the story, but it involves some massive spoilers before you can 'use' it so I don't know anything about it.

The Playstation 3/Vita version has an Xtend edition which has some extra story at the end. The main Japanese site says that Sekai Project is going to translate it for Western audiences, Sekai Project says they're going to release it on Steam but I've only been able to find one twitter message relating to it so I don't know its current status.

Have you gotten around to Steins;Gate yet? As I've played more visual novels, I definitely feel that it's the best I've played. Most VNs have at least some really dumb things or awkward porn, but Steins;Gate doesn't have any of those problems. I think the main reason it left such a good impression on me is that it has an extremely solid, satisfying ending, which I find to be really rare in most VNs/manga/anime.

Regarding the issue of porn messing up otherwise good VNs, I've been playing Kara no Shoujo and it easily has some of the most awkward, inappropriate porn scenes that I've seen in a visual novel. It's a huge shame, because I really like the art/plot/music/characters/setting, but the random porn keeps ruining the tone/atmosphere. For example, I just went to the weird coroner lady to get the results of some analysis I asked for and she pulls the MC's pants down, sucks his dick, and has him bone her in the butt (as payment I guess?). It's especially awkward in light of the fact that a major plot point is that your character is all depressed about his fiance being brutally murdered 6 years ago. Another awkward scene was a bad ending where this girl has a serious talk with me about how she's actually a bad person who runs this prostitution ring, and then asks the MC to gently caress her because I guess that would cleanse her of her sins or something. She is then also brutally murdered and in the process the murderer tosses her uterus in your face (while you're laying on the ground and can't move) and it mentions some of the MC's cum coming out of the uterus (because he had sex with her immediately prior to them being kidnapped by the murderer). That was some of the most unnecessarily gross poo poo I've ever seen in a game. Then there's the fact that your character is 30 years old and a lot of the girls are 17/18 year old high school students (I don't know yet how many are potential love/sex interests, but I imagine at least a few).

I still enjoy it and think it's interesting and worth playing, but every time I hit one of these scenes I just think "oh for fucks sake."

I actually bought Higurashi Sui edition on the PSN store recently. It's Japan only but from what I've read it has all 19 chapters, full voice acting, best character/background artwork from what I've seen and an extra 'Drama CD' chapter (I guess that means it's audio only?).

I've never played the original but from what I gather it didn't have any decisions. This version however does have decisions that determine what chapter you want to read first, which is great for people who've played certain chapters before but for newcomers like me it's actually a bit annoying because from what I've read it's fairly important that I play the first 8 chapters in the 'intended' order. I found a wiki that explains what I should do in a non-spoilery way. I'm currently at the summer festival part of the first chapter (Onikakushi-hen) before poo poo Gets Real so I assume I'm at the very end.

I intentionally read as little as possible to avoid spoilers so this might've been naive of me but from what little I've played so far it's... a lot less action-packed than I expected. I assume the game is just setting up all the characters for the next couple of chapters but so far it's mostly about wacky hijinks with some very minor foreshadowing. The protagonist's "well this is weird but I better not ask any further because I don't want to be rude" shtick is getting a little annoying. I hope this is mostly an issue of the first chapter.

As a final question, did the original version have 'TIPS'? They're really short stories that explain some details that you can unlock as you play the game.

Yes, but I think the remakes like Sui added more.

There's not a lot I can say about the rest without spoilers, but you'll have a better idea of how the pacing works after you finish the first chapter.

Getsuya

Choices were put into the console versions to determine which route you would see, since all the Question arcs are available from the start. The Tips have been there since the original release, yeah. And the pacing is a bit wonky because, unlike the original separate releases, the console version had to set up all the Question arcs together so the content is a little front-heavy. The routes themselves move much more quickly.

But Sui is definitely the best version to experience. Before it you would need 4 different DS games to get all the bonus chapters together in one place. I'm stoked that MangaGamer is giving us the whole Sui collection on Steam (minus voices and theme songs though)

Urgh. I've been playing through Amnesia: Memories after getting it for a buck back in the Steam Thanksgiving sale. It certainly wasn't my favorite VN ever or anything, but I was enjoying it. Ikki's route had a pretty decently sized helping of standard otome creepy poo poo in it, but it was never too terrible and was neat overall. Kent's route was legitimately pretty great. Then there's loving Toma.

Jesus loving christ I hate yandare characters, especially when you can get "good" endings with them that aren't knocking them the gently caress out and calling the cops. The same poo poo popped up in Sweet Fuse, too, but at least there it was easily ignorable; and the rest of the game was fantastic enough to make up for the slight blemish.

Are there any VN's that feature abusive characters like that where the true ending is "this poo poo is dangerous and hosed up, get the hell out of dodge right now"? The only thing I can really think of is Magical Diary with Damien's route, and that's a Western made game.

Meh... #overrated
I really got into VNs (well, really is a relative term) after Steins;Gate since that was pretty much amazing. Before I played 999/VLR (very much recommend them), Ace Attorney (great) and Dangan Ronpa 1 and 2 (1 was better) plus P3/P4 have some VN parts I guess.

So far most VNs I got post Steins;Gate and the above list are kind of crappy. Cho Dengeki Stryker was meh (although it was at least amusing). Analogue/Hate Plus were meh. If My Heart Had Wings was fairly bad. So I have Clannad and WAS on my Steam list right now plus Muv-Luv through kickstarter (have high hopes for this one). Oh, Kira Kira was pretty good because of the music (played iOS version) and I picked up Deardrops & db vs Deardrops bundle sequels to it from mangagamer (that site... my eyes). Cherry Tree Comedy Club was short, kind of meh, but also amusing.

I am not sure if that counts but 80 Days and 39 Steps are highly enjoyable if not quite the same VN format. So are Sorcery Games (iOS/Android) and King of Dragon Pass (iOS/Android/PC). These are all more akin to "Choose your own adventure" but still are close enough.

Oh, and on Higurashi. That art makes my eyes bleed, I am going to skip that one.

Edit: I have been eyeing G Senjou Mao and Grisaia on Steam but the first one's art is off-putting and the latter I saw a few anime episodes and immediately stopped watching.

The Steam release has new sprites and you can download patches to use PS3 sprites (and voices) as well.

This post is pathetic.

Started playing G-senjou no Mao in bed at night with my ipad via splashtop, it just occurred to me to try and use remote desktop for VNs last week and it works really well even on my many years old ipad. Seems like a fun concept for a story although I wish the main character were less of a poo poo.

At least he's not as much of a poo poo as the green hair kid who I hope dies

This is kind of what I'm stuck doing :( Not enough time to be able to sit in front of my PC for VNs :( Does the music\voice come over OK?
