Tracked=Driven on a race track.

IMO, tracked cars get abused (but are generally maintained) but there's plenty of toolbags beating them harder on the street, drifting and hard launches are far harder on a car than driving on a track.

There's two pumps for the early e46s, LF-20 and LF-30. LF-20 has the cast bracket, LF-30 has the bent sheet metal bracket. That's definitely an LF-20 pump. If your PS bracket looks like the one on the right you need the other pump.

I honestly think I see more E30s in good shape around here than I do E36s. It's not that I never see them, either, it's just rare to see one with all matching body panels, let alone in anything resembling "good condition." The funny thing is that I still see plenty of decent E34s, and I see several very, very nice E38/39s every day. For whatever reason, E36s in this area just always seem to be beat to hell and falling apart.

Anyone have any experience with buying rebuilt e30 calipers from RockAuto? I have no interest in rebuilding my own calipers.

I've got a lead on a set of rebuilt brakes supposedly rebuilt and painted red by "Bendix" for 175 +shipping, which seems decent:

edit: here's a pic of a set sold as "POWER STOP" in red, from rockauto (might be the same brand?)

Any tips for what might be causing some intermittent jerky acceleration in my manual E46 330ci? Car has about 90k miles and has the sport package suspension on it.

If I'm cruising along in say 4th or 5th gear, doing like 40mph, then punch it sometimes the car kind of bounces or surges several times as it accelerates. It feels like it's coming from the rear end, but that might just be because it is RWD. It almost feels like there is some sort of drivetrain slack that is preventing smooth power delivery. I don't really think it is engine-related, since I don't get any serious stumbling or hesitation from the motor itself. The fuel filter was also replaced earlier this year preventatively.

Maybe related, if I get on/off the gas quickly there's some noticeable jerk to the drivetrain as well. I can mostly finesse it away, but it sometimes feels like more than just the weight of the car shifting around.

Motor mounts? Transmission mounts? Driveshaft guibo? What all should I be looking at? The shocks are still original, and I know they are coming due for a refresh, but they aren't completely blown out -- two different good independent euro mechanics have said they aren't in dire need of replacement yet.

I had exactly the same problem with my E46; it turns out my diff bushings were pretty much ruined. I recently replaced them, along with my motor and trans mounts (M3 mounts for both) and giubo (which was entirely preventive, but since you need to remove it to drop the driveshaft, might as well) and the slack/juddering is totally gone now.

E: There is a small chance it could be your subframe mounts or even the subframe itself tearing instead, so have a good hard look at it before you throw parts at it :smith:

X-Posting from the stupid questions thread because I realized this is probably the more correct place for it:

2009 BMW Z4 (E89) sdrive30. Sucked in a lot of dust at the track, want to replace air filters.

Cabin air filter is part 64 31 9 195 194. Is there any reason not to just get the also-fit brands for around half as much as the OEM/superior-german-adhesives filter? Planning on getting the charcoal ones regardless.

Thanks, that's somewhat reassuring. I'll try to get it up on a lift sometime soon and check all those things out. It's difficult to pin down since it can be hard to reproduce, but when it happens you know it.

I really hope it's not the rear subframe tearing issue. I don't think it is since it's pretty inconsistent and there's not really any clunking or rattling. The car is also a 2004 and has also never been tracked or even autoXed, so doesn't really fit the "usual" suspects. Not to say it couldn't happen, though...

Power steering replaced. Only took about three hours, working around the transmission cooler meant that I had to practically disassemble the old pump where it was and slide it out bit by bit.

Filled it up, no leaks, did the whole priming, checking, refilling deal and took it around the block and it still groans a little. Could it be air in the pipes, is there something I should check or should I flush the fluid again?

E39 wheels only fit on E39's. I think the X5 of the same generation is similar, but some one needs to confirm that for me.

They use some giant rear end hubs on the E39 for what ever particular reason. If you want, you have to get spacers/etc.

Yep, 400ish for a set of spacers is loving expensive. You can get a nice set of M-pars for that money. (M-pars are always the answer for E39s)

Bah. Passenger seat occupancy sensor on my 09 328 has been failing. There are a bunch of other 3, 5, and 7 series with recalls for this, but not mine. Dealer wanted about $1k for it with substantially marked up parts and labor. Called BMWNA, and they'd need a diagnosis confirming it before I could talk to a resolution specialist. Did that, dealer wouldn't offer anything on it, regional offered %10 off, which is pretty sad. I wouldn't be so annoyed by this, but I went through the same thing with my 06, and that dealer at least offered to cover labor. If a widely recalled part is failing in a bunch of other cars, you might want to expand the recall.

Anyway, ordered the part from Tischer, and hopefully I'll have it in hand for a Christmas weekend project. Hog rings are fun, right? (Gotta remove the seat, then remove the cushion and sensor from the leather, and install the new one. Good times.)
