It probably is the fact that Australia had a well known recent race riot. It just high lights things like the White Australia policy, treatment of indigenous Australians and goddamn lovely foreign refugee camps in people's minds.

Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce may have made an enemy of Hollywood star Johnny Depp earlier this year, but it has clearly not put him on the celebrity blacklist: he has issued a joint statement with Santa Claus on Australia's biosecurity measures.

Less than two weeks out from Christmas Day, Mr Joyce and his red-suit-wearing friend have confirmed December 25 celebrations would go ahead as scheduled this year.

So what I'm getting from this is that Barnaby Joyce is holding Christmas to ransom each year to get his way.

If Australians are banned from any of those places it's almost certainly because they're loud and they drink too much rather than because they're racist. There are about a million of them in Tokyo though so it shouldn't be hard to find one that will let you in.

"We're delivering quality walking tours we believe are a little bit gritty, a little bit off the beaten track that are meant to be demonstrating what Melbourne is really about," she said.

"I guess the added value to that is we're giving disadvantaged people employment opportunities."

Nikki Boer, one of the first customers to try the tour, recommended it to locals and tourists alike.

"I think that everyone should do it, even if you live in Melbourne, you know it's just great to get behind an organisation that's about social inclusion," she said.

While we have a political system that only has three representatives who will vote against putting infants in indefinite detention (Might even be less these days) the world needs to keep telling us we are unforgivable scum.

In recent years the world has been shaken by protest but the Arab Spring uprisings, the Occupy sit-ins, the SlutWalk campaign and the climate change marches are all part of a long tradition of social activism.

Rear Vision looks at popular protest and social change.

Related to multiculturalism this was followed by an interview with Helen Joyce most notable for the comment, "Although Brazil congratulates itself for being multicultural if you compare people on the metric of income they follow the gradient of their skin colour." Dulux have a lot to answer for.

Australia is a great example of a multicultural country. We took the land from a weaker culture yes, but from there we have built an inclusive and egalitarian society. We have problems like all countries, but Australia and current day Australians have nothing to be ashamed of. This type of journalism that is intended to cause division and unrest. Journalism focussed on small flash points of unrest amplifying the issue and polarising opinions is the big problem here. People can have different opinions, what shouldn't be tolerated is violent counter protests. If a protest group breaks the law, that's law enforcements issue. Suppressing people's right to express themselves is what escalates and insights violence; the media on the back of interest groups telling people what is appropriate is also polarising and causes social unrest. People are free to make decisions for themselves, if those decisions are illegal then the justice system should hold them to account. IMHO

It could pretty easily be argued that trying to crush Islam is being pretty hard for curbing free speech. I just kind of liked that part because out of context it looks they realise that all the poo poo they throw at Muslims will alienate and radicalise them rather than the exact opposite of what they meant by saying this.

Queensland anti-vaccination supporter holding ‘chickenpox parties’ for children

Anti-vaxxer and mother-of-two Hollie Singleton has advertised via a Facebook anti-vaccination group the opportunity to infect other children with the highly contagious disease.

“My son has a full case of chickenpox. We are all home together for the week,” she wrote.

“If anyone wants to clear this bug now and get it over with please come to Brisbane and visit us. We are here to infect only those who want it!”

‘Chickenpox parties’ were a more common occurrence last century before a vaccine was developed.

Well except for the going against the entire theory of modern demonstration: non-violent resistance. Suppressing people's right to express themselves eventually results in Ghandian style resistance because of the futility of taking a violent response in a power imbalance. So yeah even out of context about as enlightened as a deep dark hole.

The point about the media is superficially appealing but experience in Australia would suggest it encourages complacency and normalises what was once considered monstrous rather than inciting a violent back lash. We have been won over by casual racism and the dehumanisation of our victims.

Labor Herald posted:

Early Tuesday evening, at the Heatley Secondary College in Townsville, Labor leader Bill Shorten hosted a community forum to discuss topics and issues of concern for more than 100 local residents.

Cathy O’Toole, the Labor candidate for the Federal seat of Herbert, opened the forum and spoke briefly about her hopes for a better Townsville future before welcoming the Opposition leader.

The event, as part of O’Toole’s election campaign, was open to Townsville residents to question and discuss issues such as education, health, infrastructure in Far North Queensland (FNQ), jobs and a “fair go for all”.

Shorten faced many questions, and one underlining issue dominated residents’ concerns: Does Bill Shorten actually exist.

A local resident expressed concern regarding his existence.

“How are we meant to vote for the Labor Party if the Opposition Leader does not technically exist on this futile plane?” the resident asked.

The Labor leader is passionate about this issue; his mother existed once so he understood the local resident’s concerns.

Shorten said: “I believe in my own existence and yours as well, fellow humans.”

A family friend got chicken pox as an adult and was made sterile by it. So my parents figured it was better to take the shingles risk.
