Oh, God. My (former) aunt decided that sugar is POISON and wouldn't let her kids eat it at all. Ever. She came over one time and brought us "cookies" and my mom asked what exactly she'd baked. ":downs: Oh, it's just regular cookies, but I don't add the sugar." She didn't replace anything, there just wasn't sugar. Also, she wouldn't let the boys eat gum so when my dad took Johnathon out one day, he was a little shocked to see Johnathon dive onto the sidewalk and pull a piece of chewed gum off the ground and pop it in his mouth. :smith:

I'm guessing they tasted like this stuff:

That tea is a kind of a mindfuck, it has all of the right flavors, technically, but ends up being disgusting because you obviously need sugar.

A sugarless sugar cookie is basically hardtack with milk, egg, and butter. So I'm imagining those three flavors mixing together with an unsalted cracker.

My wife and I cut way back on sugar but she still likes to make cookies from time to time, so we started cutting back the sugar a bit each batch and replacing it with almond meal or some other dry ingredient. We reached a point where the sugar was reduced by a factor of 4 and they were still nice if you don't have a super sweet tooth, perfect with a cup of tea. Any lower and they were disturbingly flavorless, also the butter comes through more strongly making them oddly savoury, wouldn't recommend.

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

The sugar cookies I usually make call for two full sticks of butter, so I imagine that would carry the day in the absence of sugar. I'm guessing it would probably taste like a Ritz cracker with entirely the wrong texture.

They're really cloyingly sweet, and they have this overwhelming taste to them that comes off as completely artificial. I usually like lemon flavored stuff, but I can't even stand the taste of these when I'm completely stoned off my gourd.

I didn't realize this place was in Brno. Next time I'm there I will try to go there one day for lunch. The food looks exactly the same as every other place I've been between around lunch time there so why the hell not.

I was just there during St. Martin's or whatever the holiday is called, where every place has duck and goose on the menu because the guy liked ducks or some poo poo. That bird-haunch in purple paste with steamed bread was served from steamer pans at a company party.

One lesson I've learned - "steak" there, unqualified, usually means a very large gristly lump of ham. If it doesn't say beef it's probably going to be disappointing. And if it says beef it will also be disappointing.

edit: Yumm-o

My quick translation of the caption is pretty unassuming - pork roulade with potatoes and salad. Where is the salad? What is in the roll? Don't ask about salat.

From a couple of pages back, but it needs to be said: don't do it. It's a cheap eatery for old people. The food is disgusting and the place smells like urine. It's several levels below regular establishments that serve lunch menus.

czech food is mostly great though.

I do remember my most disappointing meal in the czech republic though. We were on a dig near the austrian border and one of the history profs basically used that as a holiday but also cooked lunch and dinner for us there. Again, usually really good rib-sticking stuff but one afternoon we came back real hungry after lots of physical labour and were faced with four things in separate dishes: Pasta that was pretty much stuck together, molten butter, cream cheese and sugar. We were told to just mix it to our taste.

No one ended up with anything that was 'to their taste'.

Ah yes, sweet pasta dishes are a thing in the Czech republic. I've been treated to the pasta/cream cheese/sugar variety a number of times. Pasta with sugar and ground ups poppy seeds is also popular.

The strangest variety is probably the one with breadcrumbs and sugar. It used to be one of my favorite meals when I was a child:

I would say that they are fairly uncommon in the Czech republic nowadays. I think they used to be the standard in cheap eateries in the past though. No idea how is it like in other eastern european countries.
