About as much as I think they're going to try to have a game where their 1 million "players" can play. That's what, 20 npcs each?

Obviously the whole plan is never going to happen but it's pretty loving retarded to say "oh yeah we've got 20 million npcs" but never actually let anyone see most of them. I mean gently caress if you're going to do that why not say you have 20 billion? It's exactly the same functionally, except the 20 million figure vaguely sounds like they might be actually doing something besides pulling an arbitrary number out of your rear end.

Those numbers aren't going to change very often though. Remember all the gunk in the database that builds up when you fiddle with it. Too much and it just starts pouring out of the servers and then they have to call a Lesnick to hoover it up.

If spawning too many ships is causing the entire server to suffer imagine what'll happen when you have 50 other systems, npc crews and actual npc trading lines or whatever. Of course, its much easier to say something than actually do it

Freelancer and hell, elite 2 did all this. It just did it smart and only spawned NPCs in a small bubble just outside radar range, and likewise deleted them when they went too far again. That was in 1994. I honestly don't see SC doing anything different.

What's the deal with the latest alpha, anyway? I haven't been following SC news at all for months, but saw headlines that alpha 2.0 is now available, so I went to my old SC launcher to upgrade. It failed to upgrade, so I uninstalled and reinstalled fresh.

Then I login and go to some city where I can run around? And see other players run around? And not a single loving thing to actually DO in this city? What

THEN I finally go to some station instead, where at long last, I can request my ship to a platform, jump into my ship, and take off! To space! And I go at 0.2 lightspeed over to some random station or something several thousand kilometers away, at which point my game promptly crashes.

I assume that if I try again I could hypothetically find things to do in space? That'd be nice. But what's the deal with the boring empty city? That all seems as useless as my hangar.

Maybe some day, many decades from now, this will be a cohesive space citizen videogame

The city you visited was something from an earlier version when they first introduced the basic social features (friends, chat, gesture system). 2.0 is the Port Olivar zone, which is a planetary system where you start on a station and can request ships, then go out and do some basic example missions. F10 brings up the mission GUI.

Did anyone ever figure out if Chris will let you skip the cutscenes in his movie?

I was hanging out with my most nerd-addicted friend the other day and discovered, while playing the witcher 3, that he will skip any and every word of dialog, even in a room full of people yelling at him to stop. I now fear SQ42 part1's 10 hours of cut scenes might not go over well with your average "gamer". I hope Sandi has a good plan to find more suckers when that poo poo releases.

P Gabz should start a friendly poll of how many people plan to skip the cutscenes on their first time playing SQ42

Because all of that is what's called "baffling them with bullshit". It will all boil down to "yesterday there were 473 pirate ambushes with 300 mortal victims and there is a need to replace the lost ships and resources so the price of shitanium has gone up 2.5 UECs" but all of this is "going on in the background and you don't necessarily (as in never) see it".

It'll work really easily - it's actually an astonishing cop out.

You claim to simulate 20 million NPC entities. In reality, you say "this space station is being built and there are 10,000 npcs working on it!" tadaa you're simulating 10,000 npc entities - oh but you can't see them, the server is simulating them in the back end by doing very complicated nothing. Suddenly 20 million isn't a terribly difficult number to come by. You actually only simulate a tiny number of npcs when your server decides to spawn them. Somewhere there's a data table that says "traders x60,000" so you know there are 60k traders in the universe but since you'll never interact with them who cares?

The literal only point to simulating NPCs in your universe is for the times when players interact with them. Simulating 20 million npcs that nobody can see is simulating nothing. What a load of poo poo, I knew they'd never pull this off but I thought at least they'd make some token effort then give up rather than design the entire system around bullshit from the ground up.

Not sure how you missed my post, but, you said you would lose faith if by mid December (I quoted my source) they didn't have 2.0 and working as promised. They did release 2.0 (only to coincide with more sales) and it's a buggy mess, you even say so... so the question is, did you lose faith because they did not deliver as you stated they should have and as they promised... pretty much everything is hosed up and better stability isn't anything amazing after *13* patches. That was my question, thanks!
