For some reason I got really used to using the A and Y buttons for shifting over the years. I've been playing Dirt with a gamepad for years. While I still always want a wheel to improve the experience, playing with a pad is in no way a disservice to the game. Codemasters is probably the best out there at making a driving game feel good no matter what you're using.

Is there a way to change what buttons navigate menus (presumably in a config file somewhere)? Really annoying with my wheel that forward/back in menus are upshift/downshift paddles and mouse can't be used for all menu navigation purposes. On top of that, resetting to default setup/doing crew recommendations for repairs requiring keyboard still (F4) is just icing on annoying menu navigation with a wheel cake. Connecting my controller just for menu navigation might be less hassle than trying to do it with the wheel/mouse/keyboard abomination. Using a gamepad without clutching I guess i'm just too comfortable shifting with A/X and rolling the knuckle to B to handbrake. I have previously tried using the thumbstick for handbrake so its closer to the handbrakes you see in rallying but I just hated how much longer it took to move between. When I think about it, obviously I am not shifting while the handbrake is engaged.

If you like using the handbrake to get the initial positioning you can start clutch kicking at low speeds to keep the wheels spinning and keep your car moving fluidly through the tight turns without that slide-stop effect that kills your time. FF cars are good for practicing handbraking. AWD/4WD cars are good for practicing clutch kicking. RWD cars are good for mastering both of these while min/maxing your throttle and braking to really fine tune your way through turns. After that you can pretty much drive wtfever you want however you want when off paved roads and see yourself crashing a lot less until you start to push your limits again. On an actual road its usually just best to slow down and take the proper and exact grip lines.

So I disassembled my g27 to take a gander at the optical encoder poo poo and it is definitely cracked. The crack is so straight that it seems intentional though, like it's how they fitted it to the pole. It is also loose on the pole, i can turn where the wheel would be mounted and hold the encoder in place. For now I will try just gluing it to the little pole thing instead of trying to get a new encoder.

If you like patches you'll love the 1.02 patch. Nothing too earth shattering, the i20 now has the upgrades it was missing at launch and custom championships can now go up to 6 events as well as a few graphical bugs being fixed.

seems like the problem with my g27 is the crack in the optical encoder itself, since gluing the loose (due to the crack) encoder in place didn't fix the problem. Guess I have to spend $38 on a replacement since the brass replacement from Thailand seems to be the only one available Seems alright though, since my mom just asked me what i wanted for Christmas for $40 or less. (Thanks mom) Seriously though, the actual encoder basically looks like it was sabotaged to crack easily. gently caress planned obsolescence, I haven't even use this wheel heavily. Creating such an important part of the design out of a lovely piece of plastic is so stupid, and then adding additional weaknesses to it as well.. Not my picture but look at this: There seem to be 3 creases in the plastic splitting the piece perfectly into 3rds, and the crack lies exactly along one of them. For mine however, the crack is still perfectly straight from the center to the outside, but it has somehow split a "spoke" (the millimeter or less thin piece of plastic between 2 holes. The entire wheel is about the size of a quarter) in half rather than even touching the obvious weak points of the holes. So it's basically added a 61st, smaller than the others, hole in the wheel that I imagine fucks with the calibration somehow. The real secret to driving RWD cars in this game is to unweld the loving differential because it would seem that everything you buy in this game has been previously owned by an aspiring craigslist drifter that wants their wheels to squeel when slowly pulling through the McDonalds drive-thru. edit: Generally lowering the differential (especially in the rear if that's the option) will let you be much heavier on the gas pedal without completely spinning out as often. Do this while also lowering the gear ratio in a car like the BMW E30 and you will find yourself cutting multiple seconds off your track times. At first it will feel like you are understeering but when you take into account the fact that you can casually flick your way through turns with any car in this game you shouldn't have any problem Tokyo Drifting to the finish line with green split times.
