She came incredibly close to completing a calendar year Grand Slam, one of the most difficult things to do in Sports. But yeah, this award is about identity-confused safe places.

Yeah it reads like something he already wrote and was just waiting for something he could toss into the template and publish. Even someone as evidently clueless as Whitlock can see that there is nothing odd or untoward about giving the SOTY award to someone who is possibly the greatest player in the history of her sport and had a fantastically successful year at what for tennis is an ancient age.

It's true, I just obtained this rough draft of Whitlock's original article when American Pharoah was still the favorite quote:American Pharoah, 3, is the most talented horse we’ve ever seen. That immense talent, the ability to cut corners and win, prevented him from reaching his current level in his prime. His Utopian worshippers want us to believe the criticisms he faced in the past about his effort and focus were the byproduct of speciesism. Had we just let the horse exist in a safe space in his mid-2s, he would’ve already flown past Steffi Graf as the most accomplished women’s tennis player of all time.

Sportsman of the Year is a nothing award anyways. They've given it to teams, coaches and lots and lots of players who weren't the best in their sport. Lots of dual winners, too. Bumgarner won it last year, a player who they didn't care about 2 months before or 2 months after. They try to play up the sportsmanship type stuff, which is dumb to start with, but how would you do that with a horse?

Muddy Burphy posted:When is that Whitlock defender going to post about that article here? I can't defend his writing anymore, which I already have said. He has gone off the rails. The real thing I was a fan of was his Fox Sports podcast, which really was the best sports podcast going. Even his ESPN one was great, but his Fox Sports one was just awesome. To be honest I never was a big fan of his actual columns. Every now and then he would write a good one, but a lot of them are garbage. I think it is even worse now because I feel like he must publish straight to j.school with no editor. I don't even read it anymore. I bailed the second week. I don't even get what he is about now. He is on some rampage about all these Black Lives Matter "leaders" being atheists millennials or something, I cant even understand it. I really can't. Everything is some "safe space" conspiracy. If he doesn't put out a good podcast soon I'm totally off the Whitlock train. He needs a few friends to sit him down and bring him back to Earth but he probably doesn't have any left. He strikes me as a black guy who wants very badly to be the black guy that white racists point to and say poo poo like "See, blacklivesmatter people? A black guy doesn't like you!" I picture him going on like Sean Hannity's show or something to talk about how Cam Newton should stop dancing and showing off.

Is that field turf pellet cancer thing legit? I remember hearing rumblings before, but I thought it was viewed as kind of a crackpot theory. She made it sound like it's all but proven, surely we aren't running kids out onto field turf every day if we know it causes cancer?

Speaking of Simmons' podcast, I thought it was really funny that they decided to go with "BSPN" for their code for promotional stuff (e.g., "go on stamps.com and enter BSPN as your promotional code").

Keep in mind that literally everything may or may not be linked to cancer these days. Her anger at it is justified since FIFA required all the womens WC games in canada be played on it (soccer is awful on fieldturf), even though a ton of providers were willing to step up and provide grass. If I recall correctly, Abby spearheaded something of a class action suit against FIFA for the conditions and got a ton of other countries' players to join in. I don't think it ever went anywhere though.
