Jason Whitlock has some words to say about this.

http://j.school/post/135257975985/serena-williams-as-victim-diminishes-her-greatness

quote:

The safe space being erected around Serena Williams could cripple what’s left of her playing career.

The soft, insecure and identity-confused want to place Williams in a protective bubble free of criticism and filled with deification. Well-intentioned people with no real experience in competitive athletics and even less understanding of sports culture (and the world) want Williams to exist on the island Sir Thomas More imagined 499 years ago.

Maybe the rise of safe-space fascism has been orchestrated to coincide with the 500-year anniversary of More’s most memorable work, Utopia, a satirical book of fiction about a “perfect” island/government that allows slavery, promotes a welfare state and doesn’t value privacy.

Whatever the motivation, our modern-day Utopians/safe-spacers love Serena Williams but don’t remotely comprehend her rise or personality. If they understood her journey, they wouldn’t be desperately trying to cast her late-career ascension as some sort of triumph over prime-career victimization.

Yeah it reads like something he already wrote and was just waiting for something he could toss into the template and publish. Even someone as evidently clueless as Whitlock can see that there is nothing odd or untoward about giving the SOTY award to someone who is possibly the greatest player in the history of her sport and had a fantastically successful year at what for tennis is an ancient age.

It's true, I just obtained this rough draft of Whitlock's original article when American Pharoah was still the favorite

quote:

American Pharoah, 3, is the most talented horse we’ve ever seen. That immense talent, the ability to cut corners and win, prevented him from reaching his current level in his prime. His Utopian worshippers want us to believe the criticisms he faced in the past about his effort and focus were the byproduct of speciesism. Had we just let the horse exist in a safe space in his mid-2s, he would’ve already flown past Steffi Graf as the most accomplished women’s tennis player of all time.

It’s just not true. The athletic world isn’t a safe space. It’s a world of hard, politically incorrect truths that is survived by the strongest. American Pharoah is a survivor, not a victim.

Sportsman of the Year is a nothing award anyways. They've given it to teams, coaches and lots and lots of players who weren't the best in their sport. Lots of dual winners, too. Bumgarner won it last year, a player who they didn't care about 2 months before or 2 months after. They try to play up the sportsmanship type stuff, which is dumb to start with, but how would you do that with a horse?

BBWs — Big Booty Women — do not write me angry e-mails. I'm only knocking Serena's back pack because it's preventing her from reaching her full potential as an athletic icon. I am not fundamentally opposed to junk in the trunk, although my preference is a stuffed onion over an oozing pumpkin.

Woj announced a new basketball-specific site with Yahoo called The Vertical, which is launching in 2016.

quote:

And this is just the beginning as Woj is launching a new basketball site, “The Vertical,” as a part of Yahoo Sports in early 2016, bringing together an elite group of NBA journalists, insiders and experts to create the internet’s hub of basketball information and storytelling.

The site will feature Michael Lee, one of the elite writers and reporters on the NBA, Shams Charania, the 21-year old wunderkind insider and writer, front office insider Bobby Marks, a 20-year NBA front office executive, Jonathan Givony and Mike Schmitz of Draft Express, the industry leaders in global information and content revolving around the NBA Draft, Nick DePaula of NiceKicks.com, the pre-eminent journalist on the basketball shoe industry, Tim Grover, longtime trainer of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant who will provide content centered around the players’ mind and body, and former NBA player Brian Scalabrine who will provide video content. Stay tuned for more information!

I like that the name is the most boring and insidery pun imaginable, very on-brand for Woj

Hello!
I can't defend his writing anymore, which I already have said. He has gone off the rails. The real thing I was a fan of was his Fox Sports podcast, which really was the best sports podcast going. Even his ESPN one was great, but his Fox Sports one was just awesome. To be honest I never was a big fan of his actual columns. Every now and then he would write a good one, but a lot of them are garbage. I think it is even worse now because I feel like he must publish straight to j.school with no editor. I don't even read it anymore. I bailed the second week.

I don't even get what he is about now. He is on some rampage about all these Black Lives Matter "leaders" being atheists millennials or something, I cant even understand it. I really can't. Everything is some "safe space" conspiracy. If he doesn't put out a good podcast soon I'm totally off the Whitlock train. He needs a few friends to sit him down and bring him back to Earth but he probably doesn't have any left.

Little of column A, little of column B. Keep in mind that literally everything may or may not be linked to cancer these days. Her anger at it is justified since FIFA required all the womens WC games in canada be played on it (soccer is awful on fieldturf), even though a ton of providers were willing to step up and provide grass. If I recall correctly, Abby spearheaded something of a class action suit against FIFA for the conditions and got a ton of other countries' players to join in. I don't think it ever went anywhere though.
