Kung Fu Fist gently caress posted:what in the gently caress I've about the museum before, the tl;dr is that it used to be a baller museum right next to Offutt that just had a whole bunch of old planes and missiles along with some SAC heritage, where the focus was on the history and you could do cool things like climb inside the planes once a year when they had their annual walk-through. Then they moved to a new indoor facility west of Omaha...the indoor facility was well needed because the planes were falling apart from being stored outside. However, a couple years after they did that they changed the name to the "Strategic Air and Space Museum" (because apparently "SAC Museum" was too war-like or something) and they adopted a wider focus of "educating the general public about air and space" and started bringing in a bunch of traveling exhibits and stuff in addition to the planes. Fine at first, but it's led them down a road where a museum ostensibly dedicated to the history of SAC has the last Looking Glass airframe to fly continuous alert (the one that flew the last sortie before the operation was shut down at the end of the Cold War after almost 30 years of continuous airborne alert) sitting out back in pieces while loving Jar Jar Binks is on display in the museum.

The display next to the SR-71 at Udvar-Hazy isn't about the plane, it's about Transformers 3. Because a transformer was a plane or something.

Really anything that gets kids to engage in history, math, science and literature is cool. My brother became a jet pilot because he was obsessed with Star Wars as a kid and wanted to fly X-Wings. You'd be surprised how many people in aviation have similar stories

Reminds me of the rollover trainer I did in afghan, but with water. We did do some poo poo at the pool on Lewis though, jumping in with full gear and getting it all off to tread water. I'm glad I never had to deal with rolling into a canal or river in country. gently caress that poo poo.

The worst I had it was the uparmored humvee rollover sim in the dark from the TC's seat with a rear door egress. Between personal gear and the equipment boxing the TC in, getting to the back was a contortionist act. Being upside down was just icing on the cake.

The helo dunker is scary for about 5 seconds but everyone gets through it. Not bad at all and kind of fun Was funny watching the dudes that didn't want to admit they can't swim. We'd be wearing a bit of gear and they'd step off into the deep end to swim 4' to get into the little contraption and immediately sink
