It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.
If anyone one is down here visiting or if you are a local, I'd advise you to stay FAR away from Disney Springs tomorrow. Tomorrow they have the first screenings of Star Wars and a majority of the screenings at the theater are for the big shindig Disney is throwing at Hollywood Studios. It is going to be crowded. They have shifts available for ops cast members to just do crowd control, so it's going to be one of those kind of days.

I'm not even seeing the movie there, I'm seeing it at CityWalk because I want to see it ASAP but not with that kind of insanity.

Oh poo poo thanks for the heads up. Doing my birthday dinner at boat house saturday night and hadn't made reservations yet. Just snagged a time thankfully.

My wife is running a race in April and I think we're planning on staying Friday, Saturday, and leaving on Sunday. I was looking at hotels and holy poo poo they are expensive. What's the best bang for the buck place to stay on property? I'm not against spending a little money but screw spending like $500 a night.

Your going at a peak time, that's the Star Wars marathon I think. Cheapest on resort property is going to be pop century or one of the all stars. Should be at or under 200 a night.

Bang for the buck is relative. I personally will pay a high premium for monorail access. Other people don't care at all about their room or amenities as long as it's clean.

Bullshit, that's last year's Fall collection!

This guy probably has the most thorough resort reviews you could find. He ranks them according how he thinks first time families would like them, but the actual commentary in the reviews is pretty objective and they're all very detailed.

I did a comparison earlier in the thread and for Christmas to New Year (the definition of "expensive hotels") to show how Coronado Springs (a mid-rate hotel at Disney) compares to outside hotels.

quote:

I'd still support going to a Value resort owned by Disney over one of the off-site hotels if you can afford it, having stayed at all three resort levels and two different off-site hotels (one of which was in the set of hotels near Disney Springs and another which was totally apart from Disney). To compare prices as of right now, for a room with two queen beds (for 4 adults) from December 24th to December 31st:

Radisson Hotel (Along Hotel Boulevard on the way to Disney Springs Marketplace): $1,397.25

Drury Inn & Suites (Sand Lake Road, about 2 miles from Universal Studios): $1,721.18

Disney's Coronado Springs Resort: $2,504.25

It's an extra grand at most, but the advantages are numerous. You're actually on property, so no need to budget money and/or time for transport to and from your off-site hotel. At worst, the rooms will be the same quality as the off-site hotels and are likely to be better kept because Disney is loving crazy about cleaning. You've got all the customer service Disney can provide, a full resort complex with food out the yin-yang and everything else it provides (arcade, pool, hot tub, stores, etc.), and likely a lot of neat detail and pretty decoration that you won't see at a Best Western. If you're really budgeting hard for a trip you can always stay at an off-site hotel (and it may be your only option for major holiday seasons, as Coronado Springs was actually the cheapest option available right now over a month in advance), but remember that your money is actually going somewhere noticeable.

And that's not even the cheapest on-property option. Like I said, Coronado Springs was the cheapest resort with availability for that week. If you go to somewhere like Pop Century or the All-Star resorts, you're paying half that.

Thanks for the input everyone. It looks like Coronado Springs is a pretty good compromise and value.

I honestly think metal detectors and walk through a are needed. It's way too easy to sneak a weapon in otherwise. I just hope they can make it streamlined and not a congested mess.

I have a friend who is a cop here in florida and I mentioned that Disney is doing this now and he actually complained that he won't be able to sneak his gun in anymore, apparently all his cop buddies do the same and if they are asked/caught they play dumb!

Disney parks definitely need some kind of security upgrade. As it is getting guns and lots of ammo in would be easy. It is also a ripe target - dense crowds and very well known. And access is so well controlled, it would actually be possible to exclude weapons, unlike a lot of other high density targets.

Anyone including LEO who is caught bringing in their service firearm is escorted by OCSO to the back where they can lock it up in special lockers. If they refuse, they are escorted off property and WDW does call the agency of the LEO involved and they are most likely very promptly reamed a new rear end in a top hat.

If you are a like that dumbass last week who turned and tried to run you will spend quality free time at the 33rd street detention center with catered meals and a nice reminder of your vacation with a felony on your record.

I've carried into Epcot once or twice, (came straight from home without stopping at the hotel,) and carry all over the resort routinely. I don't generally carry into the parks, just because ride seats and large crowds aren't generally compatible with a concealed sidearm. Unlike some other states, Florida state law prevents Disney from doing much of anything past asking you to leave if they find you with a legally-possessed-and-carried weapon. Essentially, outside of specific exemptions (municipal/county/state buildings, schools, sterile areas of airports,) you can put up no weapons signs and rules, but they carry no force of law. The worst that can happen is you can refuse to leave, and they can arrest you for trespassing. You'd have to be pretty monumentally stupid and/or a huge, throbbing dick to actually get smacked with that, though.

More security is concerning to me though, because I generally carry a leatherman everywhere. I wonder if that's verboten now. :(

Why yes, rumor has it there is a hidden area where the really dark side of Disney lives. They take you into a dungeon where a dragon and the crocodile from Peter Pan waits for you. Man I hear it is scary down there.

But yeah, please don't be this idiot because I will clip your picture from the Orlando Sentinel Orange County Jail Mugshots page on here.

If they find it or see it on you including if you make it through the gate undetected on the first pass and decide to take it out later and it is spotted... then yes you are going to be asked to take it back to your vehicle or lock it up. I just had this verified.

They have multiple teams of plain clothes around the park that could spot you as well. They are trained to look for people trying to sneak things in like firearms, machetes, chainsaws.

That said, don't go to the Christmas party if someone in your party has epilepsy. We had to leave because those stupid loving blinking Christmas light necklaces. Disney gave us our money back but drat.
