so I'm talking about Saga with my brother, who lives in Micronesia for Peace Corps. He informed me he had donated all the comics I sent him to the library out there, and now they have a comics section, which is super effective at getting the kids to want to learn to read. Their comics section has Black Science, Saga, and a bunch of other poo poo I've sent him (basically like all the trades of my top 10 comics or so). Anyhow, he's talking about how he hasn't read past trade 3, and I linked him the dragon-sucking-itself image, and it made me realize that Saga was one of my favorite comics (his too) and it has completely poo poo the bed as of Volume 5, with Volume 4 being a downgrade as well.

Is there something that happened to BKV that made him tank Saga so hard, some sort of drama involved?

Yeesh everyone's so down on saga all of a sudden. It's pretty much the same comic it's always been for better or worse. Oh no a dragon sucking his own dick what a horrible and unexpected image from the series with a giant deformed cyclops penis in like the first six issues.
I get that's not everyone's cup of tea but it's not exactly surprising. I'm still enjoying the heck out of the story and love that no one really feels safe and I genuinely never know where it's going and Fiona staples art is still entirely mind-blowing.

On an unrelated note, seconding the love for Space Riders! I too grabbed that first trade on a whim and man the Kirby dedication on the title page let me know I was in for a treat right of the bat. It's brimming over with this crazy frantic energy and holy cow the colors! I can't wait to read more as soon as possible.

No drama, but he has been loading up on his writing pile. He launched both We Stand on Guard and Papergirls this year, so I think he might be overloading himself a bit.

I picked up issue 2 of Huck, and between the first two issues it's got the one of the best starts to a comic I've ever read. Especially the first one, Huck is so straightforward and uncynical you can't help but smile.

Does it? I dropped it after the first issue, has it improved since then?

Or is it a case where if I didn't like the first issue I won't like what follows?

Depends on why you didn't like it?

ALIVE ENOUGH TO DIE
Personally I couldn't stand the character of Led Dent or the stupid top-hat wearing hacker-killer from the first issue, but I decided to stick with it because I like Remender so much.

It's been worth it--the tone shifted to be much nicer and more intimate after the first issue. I haven't read #4 yet, but it's sitting on my desk, and I'm excited to get to it.

I didn't like the whole "people are addicted to their screens and devices", I understood it as part of the plot but the lead character's inner monologue about it just felt a little preachy.

K well, both of your complaints seem to be things the book is heading away from.

I'd count on addiction being a pretty big theme in the book though.

Ditto, also I quite enjoyed the Dick-suckin' Dragon splash. Pretty much read it as a winking, 'gently caress all y'all' from the book that featured a dying soldier that displayed gay porn on his death, a woman asking if she's making GBS threads during child birth, a goddess farting out the universe, wrasslin soap operas fuled by space drugs, etc. At this point, I've come to expect weird and dirty jokes with my tragic Star Wars. However, upon Hazel revealing her parentage and as a result maybe killing her teacher is maybe a step too far, and a little bit unearned. That is if they go through all the way with it, considering they took back Lying Cat's and The Will's death I'm holding my breath.

I'll probably still read it if they do.

Quick question for you guys. I'm fairly new to most comics, but I'm starting to read some Conan stuff. Anyone know if there's any chance DH might rerelease The Colossal Conan collection? I'd love to get my hands on a copy, but it sells for stupid money now, and my only chance would probably be a reissue at some point.

Recently been reading through the top cow comics from the humble bundle a few back. It's a pretty neat, tight little universe they've tied together but jesus I feel self-conscious every time my lady catches me on a full page near-porn spread. Which is pretty frequently.

I'm generally pretty pro-misogyny and this is the first time I've even really noticed over the top women in comics.

How is the art in Witchblade misogynistic? I've never read it and assumed it has the typical overload of cheesecake typical of Top Cow but this is the first time I've heard that there's a deeper problem.

As far as I know that Colossal thing was a last ditch effort from Dark Horse to squeeze out some extra money before they lost the Conan liscense. If that's true you won't see another printing.

Yes this, I generally don't care if the whole reason a woman is in the storyline is to end up in the fridge, or if catwoman has to bang it out with batman in order to legitimize herself in the batverse because it's comics right? But I just found it shocking that every single gift in the Top Cow universe seems to be some way of making a mystic/cyber thong or pasties. I've never seen it so constant and in your face before.

Is sexually exploitative or empowering or neutral? I can't say, seems like misogyny was a poor choice of words. I was really just looking for a "yeah witchblade do that."

Oh I just meant that it's really cheesecakey :v:. I also freely admit I didn't read many issues so I can't comment too much on the writing but from what little I read it was pretty standard. I can't remember the issues I read, but a while back I found a jumping on point (wanna say around #170?), read 2-3 issues, couldn't get over the cheesecake despite normally having a decent tolerance, never picked it up again.

Eh, I would argue that the perception will shift significantly if you started reading comics in the last 10 years, particularly if a new reader is focusing on the big 3 and sorting through the best-of 90s Vertigo/and DH. Even back in 2001 or whenever I read Rising Stars I was kinda baffled by the extent of cheesecake and how distracting it was, and that kind of stuff now seems to be largely the domain of Xenoscape and Avatar.

That's not to say things are remotely perfect and I can think of well more than a few problem examples from the majors but barring Land or Cho getting on a book I want I have a tough time thinking of a popular title going anywhere near the uncontextuallized t&a fest that is Top Cow, and that Top Cow is an aberration compared to modern comics.
