When she goes in the last time it is still up from the previous time and she just changes it herself. If everything was still up on the screen it isn't too hard to double click your user object then edit it.

If you have the technical skills, there are many other areas of the country that will pay more for the same work, and a lot more job openings in general. Computers are pretty easy to figure out when you pay attention and are good at critical thinking. I wouldn't put it above the producer to figure out how to work the domain directory well enough to change her name.

In his words they were "blown away" by my experience and certs and figured I'd want a huge sum of money to work for them "like in the $70k range" and they couldn't afford that. User forwards a ticket to a director, who jumps on us: "His phone still doesn't work. It hasn't worked in months! Why doesn't it work?" What does it do? "All calls go straight to voicemail" So the phone does actually work, all of your calls go to voicemail? "Well... it doesn't work-work, but yeah it works..." Let me guess, do you see a lit up button that says "SendAllCalls"? <no response>

IT is still a cost center and treated as such by most organizations. The ones that don't figure it out don't last, and the ones that do are the ones that end up nice to work at (eg: mine).

GoatShaver posted:Bonus points if your CEO tells you that you "just cost money". Last job this was the opinion of every C-level except CIO. Majority of our income was basically a call center. We built our own PBX, fax servers, etc... Most weeks they'd scheme up some new way to make money: "build website that does this, market x services to these people, take calls for these people," whatever. This meant spinning up whole new companies with literally no notice. IT was tasked with making everything work from soup to nuts; hiring, process, project management, oh and of course technology. So, yeah, those workers on the phone, making sales "just cost money" too...

A Swagway/balance wheel/hoverboard/whatever the zeitgeist hot Xmas item of 2015 is named came in... The morning show staff got five of 'em and were riding them up and down the halls, which was fun because the hallway being used has a slight upward incline. I tried one out and it is not easy for a first-timer to make one of these things work. Doubly so because this was the day after the holiday party - they rented a booze cruise, with decent food and freely flowing liquor, and tons of door prizes. I think I'm finally in a pod. These days when people ask about the new job, my response is "I can't complain - and believe me, I've tried!"

Got a ticket saying that we needed to "computerize" our bell system (I'm a sysadmin at a school). I go and take a look at the current bell system and it's just a box of wires and electronics attached to the wall. I opened it up and saw absolutely no interface that would allow a computer to be attached to it, no ethernet, no serial ports, no USB ports, no ports whatsoever and I know it's not on our network at all. Yep, I'll get right on "computerizing" it.
