This was fantastic man, I liked showing both the influences like Hidden Fortress and what it inspired, it was good to acknowledge both that no Lucas didn't invent the hero's journey story but he probably made the first great movie about it.

I still enjoy his YMS reviews and think he's a really good editor, but in most of his other videos he does come off as a little condescending.

This is amazing. I'm really struck by how everything borrowing from Star Wars is totally ignorant of what Star Wars borrows from other things. Also that pipe-filled hallway is so explicit that I'm sure it counts as plagiarism.

I really like YMS's stuff but I'll disagree with his assessment of Unfriended. It was a really smart, awesome movie that wasn't just a cool concept. The theme was great, the acting was natural (except for a few instances of weirdly outdated slang) and surprisingly well done and it was really well paced. His nitpicks are things I never noticed and honestly don't seem like a big deal in the least.

The film's absolute biggest failing was it had a PERFECT ending all set up and then drops the ball totally and goes for a lovely horror movie jump scare. Other than that it's one of my favorite horror films in a long time.

So here's something kind of interesting... Back in 1990, Lucasfilm took footage from both the "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" trilogies -and "Willow"- to make a sort of hyper-condensed 'story' that shows off that all seven movies kind of follow the same basic structure punctuated by action sequences. This reel was known as "Wow!" and it was put on laserdisc to demonstrate THX's super-expensive home audio systems.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooope!

This one video took months to put together and I'm aching to move on to new material.

Besides, the first film is the most dramaturgically interesting. Star Wars Ep IV built on dozens of different genres and created an innovative, fun new way of filmmaking. The other Star Wars films are based on Star Wars.

For Empire I'll just link to this classic here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmTpOQrqoO0

But really the rest of the original trilogy borrowed from many of the same sources, just in different ways. Cloud City is taken from the Hawkmen of Mongo (Flash Gordon, again) Jabba the Hutt is based on Sidney Greenstreet (Casablanca, again) the dogfights are still there, the one-setpiece-per-planet structure is still there, it's all built from the same stuff, more or less.

Plus this was reeeeeeeeallly hard to edit and I am not sitting through those duller-than-sin Flash Gordon serials again.

I'm curious, do you have any horror films in the pipeline? For me horror films are probably the most interesting films to explore and discuss simply because the good ones are so few and far in between the mediocre and garbage ( I say this as a horror fan). Maybe a look at something like the original Halloween and a compare and contrast with the remake? I know Phelous sort of went into it in his review but that really seemed to secondary to jokes. It'd also be interesting for your look at maybe the French Extreme stuff like Martyrs or Inside.

From what I understand: the original site was made for them by Blip, and thus only supported Blip content*. (Lindsay mentioned in a Patreon state-of-the-union post). So when Blip went, the site went.

Maker is supposed to make them a new site, and give them space to host their vids*. Makes hasn't told them when (or if) that's ever coming. I would guess that Disney has less than zero shitfucks to give about any particular Blip producer, so it all comes down to the mercy of a megacorp. {shrug}

I don't know what sort of contractual obligations there are in play-- maybe there's some sort of "you aren't allowed to build your own site, and we have no obligation to stick to a timeline to making you one" thing going on. Otherwise, I would have thought Dan Olson would have thrown up at least an interim Wordpress site, or hacked the existing site to use other embeds.

Aside from the two things marked in *, it's all speculation. K-squared would know more than I do.

Sidenote to KK: If it is just "lack of resources / manpower" to getting up a interim and/or permanent site, and the Chez team is interested in a site like Phelous', send me a pm or whatever we call them here on Something Awful.

Kinda, yeah? Like they do the video essay type of video but they never seem like they're making a point and they can meander quite a bit. They're a bit like junk food, it's quick and reliable but you're not going to get all that much substance. Also the voice processing seems to bother some people.

And they can be really, really awful with their research. For instance, that video is conflating two entirely separate issues China is looking into "solutions" for. Sesame Credits are solely to fix the financial system by encouraging better lending practices and have little to do with social media. It's also only one of several proposed ideas China is considering to fix the problem by 2020.

Now, apparently they have been severely monitoring their social media (of course) but it's a completely different thing from Sesame Credits. That video's mostly just clickbait (and it worked since they got featured on tons of the sensationalist gaming sites.)
