They haven't really had time to show it so far, but the state of Earth will probably surprise non book readers. (spoilers if you want to go in blind I guess?)What the Martian guy said about handouts is basically bang on. The population is through the roof, while technology plus the space boom slashed the number of jobs in half. Like half of Earth's population get free state food and internet, but have next to no chance of getting ~~~A Job. And that's not in the sense of a social safety net; most people on Basic will never have the privilege of being employed, ever.

If Mars is a giant state infrastructure project, Earth is a giant state humanitarian mission.

It makes sense, the Soviets were always about being a worker state first building toward a mission while future Earth is more of a traditional welfare state taken to an extreme. I guess the irony is that both require basically third world labor (belters) to function. That said the show has portrayed at least the UN being more dominant in the belt.

That said, I could see why Martians would be pretty salty about Earth still but be more idealistic since they still a goal to their civilization. Earth more less exists because it has a lot of people on it that need to be taken care of.

So I've been reading a couple reviews where people are dropping the entire show right from the beginning because they whitewashed Ade, and that kinda got me thinking. I wonder if it was kind of a 'damned if they do, damned if they don't' type deal, because either they cast her with a white actress and piss people off about whitewashing, or piss people off by showing another example of 'WOC love interest to the white lead only to immediately die for his manpain'. You can't please everybody, but I can't see them getting out of that one unscathed from the internet no matter which way they spun it.

That's a good point. The authors said they cast who they cast because she had the best chemistry with Holden's actor. Would it be cool if Ade was how she was in the books? Hell yeah. But this series already has a bunch of hoops to jump through and, let's be honest, the ethnicity of a character who is barely mentioned in the first book and I think never in any later ones is just nothing to worry about. Especially when the rest of the show seems good about showing different races and ages and such.

In the book Holden wanted to get emotionally involved and Ade was like "you just my booty call, quit catching feelings bitch." They should have left it like that with an African actress.

Amos is an interesting character and I'm really digging Chatham's interpretation of him. I think people who don't like his take on Amos have some combination of not having read the novels closely, or read The Churn short novel. or know much about the actor.

(General Amos backstory spoilers for the books and stuff from first four episodes)The thing about Amos, is I think everyone pictures him as an older, craggier sort. I definitely saw him as someone like Ron Perlman when I first read the books. I also initially found The Churn novella to be one hell of a shock because of how differently and how clearly it lays out Amos - he was still basically a kid when he left Earth and it can't have been that long between then and the time of Leviathan Wakes. Chatham has nailed a perfect flat sociopathic affect that fits Amos to a tee. He's also 37 which seems like the perfect age and he has the definite baby face that a lot of people comment on Amos having. Amos isn't a scary dude as far as his appearance goes. He's scary because he's unsettling, he's scary because he will kill you if he thinks you're a threat and will go from 'generally amiable' to 'murderous' without blinking, complaining or commenting on it. I think Chatham has nailed that from Amos casually saying how he doesn't understand why he shouldn't just throw Holden off the side of the shuttle beyond that Noemi wouldn't like it, to looking more than ready to shoot Holden if Noemi would just tell him to later in the episode, and so on. He's an attack dog who leashes himself to Noemi out of seeing her as a kindred spirit and then to Holden out of respect for his integrity (but even then, probably has more out and out loyalty to Noemi than Holden). But he's also absolutely fantastic with kids and isn't a dumb brute.

Is that a thing you get a lot on TV? I don't recall seeing it (and being a white dude with a black girlfriend I take note when I do see that sort of relationship).

That said, if they did make her black then it's a case of 'black dudechick dies first' so yeah I guess they really can't win.

They went and switched Holden from Captain America to Mr. Swarthy and Ethnically Neutral guy, you'd think that might earn them some good will.

Though honestly, if we were to delve into the mind of PC complainers, Ade is such a minor character that changing her ethnicity had to have been a rather specific and calculated decision, cause it's not like they needed a particularly good actress or even someone who needs to commit to the role, they needed a good looking girl and that's about it so if I had to guess the choice of going with a white blonde one was done under the assumption that the audience is a bit racist and would prefer seeing the protagonist going at a white girl. however Naomi is obviously the main love interest and they kept her true to her book description, sans the freakishly tall bit, so I don't think this is a big deal either way.

Could be, but it's the first episode so they also really need to sell Holden since he'll be the main character. She's a big part of that, so I can buy the chemistry reasoning.

In universe, I don't remember anyone ever caring about today's idea of race. Every group back on Earth is equally miserable. All that's left is class stratification, ironically imposed by a socialist utopia where nobody has to work if they don't want to.

The planets and the Belt are all that really matter. Instead of making hated ethnic groups into the working class, the magic of space living lets them make the working class into a hated ethnic group.

Apparently enough to be a common complaint. I mean, I love how hard they've fought to keep it as diverse as it is, and the "if you can't make it S-rank perfect, don't bother trying" mentality is just depressing, because you're going to miss out on a lot of good stuff along the way.

InnerSpace does aftershows for the Space site, and for episode 3 they had the woman who played the prostitute (whose name is apparently Gia) and I honestly didn't recognize her until they said it. The makeup job and what was probably really subtle CGI are amazing. And I don't know why, but I expected her to speak with her in-show accent. The dialect coaches on the show must be top-tier.

People expecting BSG level dogfights in this show should really stop. It's explained in the books that most space battles are really boring ordeals mostly handled by computers. The real meat is in the hosed up human interactions.

They mention in the books that the core four are running at one-third crew, so at least a dozen crew, plus or minus extra Marines. But yeah, I'd like a better reference for scale than the chaotic glimpse we got.

It's because of the story thread of the Rocicante pulling the Barbipicola into a higher orbit. Tiny war ship pulling a presumably large and loaded freighter kind of sounds wrong. That and I remember reading about plenty of rooms, which is weird considering it didn't look much wider than the entrance hatch in the episode. (Book 4 spoilers)

This is not a story or character spoiler, just a description of the ship: Yeah it does but I always took that as a temp thing. Throw the marines in a room, strap them in, tell them to suck it up, and move. The ship is built like a tall beer can with the engines at the bottom so the various rooms will probably show up on the show as needed as "oh, its just a deck above/below".

If any one wants to see more of the various ships Scify has concept art up here. The ship the main characters left with is slide 13.

The show did a great job on the space Mormons.
