Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the Arrow Air Flight 1285 disaster. A bunch of US solders were on their way home from Egypt. The plane had a stopover in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, just a few hours from where I grew up, and stalled and crashed almost immediately after taking off again. The cause? Nobody knows for sure, but the culprit was suspected to be icy wings. The cockpit voice recorder was on the fritz and didn't catch anything, unfortunately. All 256 people on board died. To date it is the biggest aircraft disaster to ever happen on Canadian soil in terms of casualties. I remember going to the memorial when I was a small child. It was probably fairly new back then. It felt kind of strange because my parents were quiet and the surrounding dense forest was gutted by the crashing plane and its fireball. I didn't really grasp the tragedy of it at the time, but now I think about it every time I see the de-icers working on the plane whenever I fly home for Christmas. Just a bit of ice is all it takes to kill that many. God drat.

I live one town over from newtown, and this whole thing has been a travesty. The fact that some people either don't believe it happened at all or try to minimize the actual outcome is pretty hosed. (hint: it loving did, one of our family friends is an EMT and was called to the scene, and he's close with a few families who lost kids). One of the local papers still has occasional articles about sandy hook, like what they're going to do with the school (tear down and rebuild afaik) and the effect it's had on CT gun laws, among other things. Even crazier would be finding out that the parent you were living with for most of your formidable years had actually kidnapped you and then being sent back to someone who was essentially a stranger to you. That's one huge mind gently caress to have to work out for a 12 year old.

As far as missing kids go, if you lived through the 90's, you probably remember that goddamned Runaway Train song/video. It's equally and : 26 kids were found as a result of it, some of whom came from bad home lives and got hosed over by being returned to their parents, and a fair number of the others had been murdered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_Train_(Soul_Asylum_song)

Man, as much as prison violence is abhorent, hearing about some arrogant fuckhead like that 'killer' t-shirt guy getting their poo poo pushed in inside is sometimes just plain... satisfying. This unrepentant piece of poo poo named James Bridson killed three members of a family in my hometown after the family's mother said he, 21, couldn't date her 13-year-old daughter. So he shot everyone but the girl in the middle of the night and made off with her into the bush surrounding the town. They found him hiding with the girl -- still alive, miraculously -- in an industrial cement mixer at a mining facility just out of town about a week later. The search actually involved military specialist crews and everything. In the end, a miner noticed a switch he turned off was turned on, and that was that. It's just as absurd as it sounds. He received life in prison and was sentenced to a minimum security work facility, where he promptly started acting up, lighting a mattress on fire in his cell and attacking other inmates whenever he could. So he ended up in a max-security facility in Winnipeg and promptly had the ever-living poo poo kicked out of him by one of the gangs. Spent a month or so in hospital. That was the last we heard of him. I imagine if he'd died in there by now we'd have heard about it, but no news is good news. Hoping he's rotting in a cell as I write this.

I have no idea why but -besides the horrific act of violence itself- what's creeping me out about this is the contrast between a unfathomably ancient site and the very modern act of terrorism. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxor_massacre quote:In the mid-morning attack, six gunmen massacred 58 foreign nationals and four Egyptians.[6] The six assailants were armed with automatic firearms and knives, and disguised as members of the security forces. They descended on the Temple of Hatshepsut at around 08:45. They killed two armed guards at the site.[6] With the tourists trapped inside the temple, the killing went on systematically for 45 minutes, during which many bodies, especially of women, were mutilated with machetes. They used both guns and butcher knives.[6] A note praising Islam was found inside a disemboweled body.[7] The dead included a five-year-old British child and four Japanese couples on honeymoon.[8][9]

My best friend living across the street from me growing up could be an unsettling story all to himself. He was a bed-wetter until he moved away at age 14. His parents split up when he was young. His dad was abusive but mom wouldn't leave him until he cheated on her. She ended up dating a bunch of dudes chaotically around the neighborhood and finally settled down with another woman from work. This doesn't sound like a big deal now, but in the early 90s with two sons approaching their teens, it ended up being another strike against him among certain people, other kids especially. He got caught "playing doctor" with some of the neighborhood girls when we were younger, and that led to him getting an 18 year old girl pregnant when he was just 14. She moved into his mom's house with the kid and he moved to his dad's in Hawaii to avoid the situation entirely. His greatest hits list currently includes: Having 7 different kids with 5 different women, including an 8th either on the way or having just arrived. Supports none of them. Getting arrested and jailed for stalking his ex, breaking into her house when she wasn't there, and then trashing the place. Getting caught in an online sting targeting men trying to gently caress teenagers in chat rooms when he was 25. The "girl" he was going to meet was supposed to be 14, and he had promised her drugs and alcohol. The cops in his bumfuck flyover town got inspired watching Dateline and set up their own sting, and he was their first catch, which was celebrated in the newspaper with his details. Having the same girlfriend he was tormenting previously find out he was working at a high school as an electrician in violation of his probation and reporting him, sending him back to jail. Multiple meth and domestic violence convictions since then. Has done actual prison stints at least 4 or 5 times, not counting county time. During one of his stints outside of jail, he was dating a girl with a racist family whose brother and friends ended up putting him in the hospital because he was half-Mexican and dating her. He pressed charges and they all went to prison. They were all there waiting for him when he inevitably hosed up again and got sent to that same prison. He ended up having to be transferred because they were Aryan Nation dudes and he would have ended up getting killed. Is currently out of prison posting long screeds on facebook about how his loving rear end in a top hat kids never call him even though he's been clean for over 3 months. I'm pretty much just waiting at this point for the revelation that he's been doing way more horrible poo poo that we don't know about, or the news he ODed or got caught by the Aryan guys. His entire story reminds me a lot of the so-called "monsters" that get posted in this thread.
