Driver Richard Suter sentenced to 4 months in patio death of toddler Geo Mounsef

Defence lawyer Dino Bottos told reporters outside court that Suter is content with the sentence and feels vindicated on the issue of whether he was impaired.

"He will serve his sentence. He will pay his debt to society," Bottos said. "Finally the one objective observer who's seen and heard it all has concluded that Mr. Suter was not guilty of impaired driving."

But once he left the bench, the sobs of Geo Mounsef's mother grew progressively louder. She refused to speak to reporters afterward.

The toddler's father and a family supporter had to be physically restrained by sheriffs. There were angry taunts at Suter's friends.

One man asked: "You happy getting off scot-free"?

Outside court, the victim's father, George Mounsef, told reporters he thought the four-month sentence was "a joke" and "beyond insulting" to Geo and the family.

The defence lawyer was not surprised by the angry outbursts.

"The family will never get over this," Bottos said. "This case — there's no winners. There's all losers. It's a case of destruction, death, despair." [:raise:]

Suter has been the victim of vigilantism. He was abducted from his own home in January and his thumb was cut off by pruning shears. Suter's wife was also attacked in a shopping mall parking lot.

There are concerns about Suter's safety in jail. The judge is asking for him to be placed in protective custody in a single cell.

Bottos said Suter accepted his sentence "stoically," but will be "looking over his shoulder and so will his family."

Added Bottos: "But hopefully the threat on his life and health ... will dissipate now when people finally realize that he was not impaired that day.

"He took the life of a sweet little boy. But it was by an accident. Not by criminal conduct."

Guy is going to get shanked out of prison. Also the strong arm of justice at play.

As soon as you add a car, specially an SUV driven by someone middle class or above, it's basically a get out of jail free card. If you ever want to murder someone, just hit them with your car. You probably won't even lose your license (that might hurt your ability to get to work!!) permanently. Cars just kill people all the time, they're accidents, nothing can possibly be done. Better infrastructure? Too expensive. Stricter rules? Oppressive.

If it was "non-impaired driver error" that should at least be enough of an error to make you unfit to ever drive again.

You never get a bit buzzed then get into an argument while driving and get so emotional you run drive into a building and kill people? Could happen to anyone, shouldn't affect our charter protected right to drive. Always focus while driving, don't text and drive, don't eat and drive, don't drive when you're not in control of your emotions, make sure crosswalks are clear before making a turn, check your blindspot for bikes. gently caress this nanny state poo poo, those are just suggestions for nerds. If everyone actually had to follow those rules driving would become stressful work. Driving should be fun and relaxing and accessible to everyone, don't stress me out with rules and actual consequences for breaking them.

I unironically agree with the second half of your post. The rules we have are loving absurd when placed in this context. What does it matter if i text at a light, when the punishment for driving into a patio and actually killing someone is so incredibly marginal.

Honestly reading the judgement makes me really mad. It's seems his sentence was lowered because of the vigilante stuff that happened to him, but I think it just ensures that something else will happen because it's pretty easy for family members to claim justice was not done in this case.

^^^^ well yeah. unless you claim bad legal advice and the judge uses his judgement to determine you weren't drinking, in which case you get off with the minimum part of that range, as in this case

However, despite interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose recently telling the Canadian Press that "I think [Trump's] off the spectrum, frankly … that's not a voice that we welcome in our party," the ARI poll indicates that a majority of Canadians who voted for the Conservatives in October think Trump is onto something.

In total, 55 per cent of Canadian Conservative voters strongly or moderately agreed with Trump's proposed ban on Muslims entering the U.S.

I think the thread consensus is that people don't factor the punishment in before they commit a crime, especially recklessness and a just society isn't necessarily a vengeful one. We've got a similar case out here, rural lady dentist killed a guy driving wasted, refused to blow, after a four year trial is sentenced to 5 years in jail that with a four year driving ban that starts now not when she's released, she hires Jian Ghomeshi's lawyer and appeals and is out on bail now. She was out during her entire trial too.

And yet voters in Canada's most conservative city have voted twice, last time in what can only be described as a landslide, to elect a Muslim mayor. Something doesn't add up here.

Judging by this and the Bill 6 nonsense, I think Canada's headed for a very unpleasant rural/urban divide that doesn't break cleanly along traditional party lines. We can see it already in Alberta with the current base of support for the Wildrose party, but I suspect a similar sentiment will begin to take hold across the country over the next four years.

Indeed, radicalized individuals were responsible for the fatal attacks on two soldiers on Canadian soil in October 2014.
