It's hard to say at this point. The GBS thread closed itself because they were sort of being overwhelmed by people just discussing the show and posting fan art. It was kind of funny and pathetic.

I'm convinced that half the people who watch Steven Universe like it because they judge entertainment based on political merits first and whether or not it's good second, and the other half watch it because it's anime in American cartoon form. While these things aren't mutually exclusive, there's probably not much overlap.

Since I'd rather not be lumped into either group, that's why I won't watch that show.

anime as a medium contains absolute shitloads of tumblr-y porn for a female audience, so no there's not really any contradiction. have you ever been to tumblr? the place is plastered with anime porn

Imagine a thread that gets infested with the absolute worst sort of tumblrposters and tvtropesposters where everything is meant to build an all-accepting hugbox so the really freaky weirdos who sexualize chidlrens cartoons feel like they're given carte Blanche to talk about their weird and borderline illegal fetishes as everyone else sort of shuffles side to side uncomfortably, unsure of how to react due to the safe space they've made

Now imagine if something horrendous happens to a completely unrelated person that gets some traction on the greater internet at large due to being a prime example of fandoms, specifically tumblr, being crazy, leading to gbs getting inordinately interested, leading to a pseudo-invasion of this aforementioned hugbox

I feel like there's a shorter easier way to phrase all this.

SU is a really good show with a really bad fanbase. I'm not saying you have to like this how but not watching it because if the fanbase is just missing out on a good thing for pretty much no reason.

For me SU is a lot like Sym-Bionic Titan in that it seems like a show that I would like a lot more if I had enough nostalgia for and emotional attachment to the source material (magical girl anime and giant robot shows, respectively) like a lot of its fans seem to have.

Sithsaber was such a spastic ball of adolescent rage that he got driven out of nearly every subforum on the site in less than two months.

i never watched or had nostalgia for magical girls and liked the show.
(madoka was three years ago and one exception ever)

i may like the occaisional anime in general but my undergrad was in a nerd college where everyone knew about every final fantasy and metal gear and were talking about one piece and chobits, dorm even had a "bad hentai night" event i never attended, so I was the least anime person there and I still like steven universe.
(the advertisements are also really misleading as is the fanbase, it's not cloyingly twee like the ads or politically judgemental and just nuts like the fanbase. ever watch "i remember you" and "simon and marcy" from adventure time? that's it.)

i never where people are going on about these shows that obviously have a general audience and people say you have to have nostalgia or something to watch it.
