The entire series is hot garbage. One of the most ridiculous combat systems in a game too. The Third World War on Sega CD had a better combat system ffs.

Good starting points, as well as Unity of Command's base game and other DLC. Also all of Graviteam Tactics can be had for ~$25 and this thread is mixed on it (generally people seem to like it, it's just different) and I have a friend who's been playing it a TON recently and his continued AAR and screenshot posting have made me want it extremely badly.

Does anyone else play Advanced Tactics gold in multiplayer? It's on sale for a reasonable price but it looks like singleplayer wouldn't be all that entertaining due to the AI.

corn in the bible posted:is Civil War 2 any good? I've got TO END ALL WARS already It is slightly better than 1. Texas and that region has been expanded and they added in a more robust territory loyalty system where you have more options to fiddle with the whole money for loyalty system. I'd say if you own 1 and weren't blown away just stick with 1. If you never owned 1 or really loved it then it is probably a good buy. If you hate ageod don't buy.

These are developers so bad that even having Paradox support them to the point of buying them up and renaming them Paradox France they still totally failed to develop their engine into anything remotely playable or deliver a functioning game.

Civil War 2 was my first experience with their new engine and they really did go backwards in terms of unit creation. That part really did make me mad.

There is actually a 5-man goon game that has been going on since February! We're on turn 52 or so. PS Baloogan it's your turn. One of the players even started an LP of it but I think stopped due to lack of interest. I find the MP to be pretty fun, but yeah the AI isn't very good. It reminds me of a souped up Empire.

I considered doing my own LP of our ATG game but everything I planned failed so hard it just got to be a little too depressing. Thank god there is always a next game, which shouldn't be too much longer.

Panzeh posted:I always thought their games worked better when it was like Birth of America where you just needed to stack units with leaders and there weren't weird divisions/corps/armies rolling around. It isn't even that. I don't mind so much their old way of doing it because it at least gives you some creativity is designing divisions. Yes they could have given you the same options with a much better interface but whatever. The real problem with civil war 1 is that the generated units would pop out in random places in the state, so you could get your shiny new Virginia brigade pop out in the north of the state right next to a giant union army and there was nothing you could do to save them since they start out locked. And of course VA has some of the best and most numerous brigades in the game. In two you can choose the territory they generate but instead of an easy to read ledger now I just have to scroll (scrolling: always an ageod engine weakness) through this giant bar every time to build some loving militia elements. It is insane.

Saros posted:I'd be keen but I don't really know what I am doing yet. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'd say I knew more than anyone in that game, or at least I had the prettiest divisions, and I still got my rear end handed to me. On one level it is a pretty simple game and on another it can be fairly complex. At the end of the day it is a simple version of the Decisive Campaigns system: you try and attack from multiple hex sides to get a bonus while not going over the over-stack number. Throw in artillery and air strikes which are just another button but work pretty much the same way and that is it. On the other hand there are a few concepts I think are really helpful that aren't immediately clear like rear units (those that are only attacked if everything else is dead but still contribute), transport (tank riders are a thing), how to organize a corps, etc. These things aren't so much difficult as poorly documented. But this is why I want to give people a couple weeks between now and when the call goes up for a new game, let them start a couple games and get more familiar with things.

I made the mistake of reading that thread before bed last night and I got so mad it probably took me two hours to get to sleep. I don't know why these type of people (white men, almost exclusively) still manage to piss me off considering they are everywhere in the south. I have half a mind to just cut to the chase and call Jefferson an atheist and see if I can get one of them to get really mad.

For me it's the realization that I share a hobby with these people that's concerning. Wehraboos are one thing (see also Panzeh's avatar), but posters who would otherwise unironically be just at home sounding like rabid Trump supporters is quite another, and especially when Matrix Games is supposed to have a "no politics" rule on their forums.

Yeeeaaah, there's a general tendency in this hobby for people to be generally quite a bit more conservative, a hell of a lot more hawkish, and a xenophobic/racist/historical revisionist streak a mile wide. Democratic socialist LGBT wargamers represent.

Mind explainign these things? The HQ system is opaque to me, I get that you build 'into' HQ's and that having enough staff is important but the rest is pretty vague and doesnt respond well to experimentation.
