Hello fellow goons, Being a terrible nerd, my recent experiences at work have me becoming interested in tribology, lubrication and more widely in condition monitoring/condition based maintenance. (At a new plant, I was responsible for/took on the task of drawing up the initial maintenance schedules.) My role is mostly hands on, and day-to-day we all do the lubing, but I've taken it on myself to occasionally make sure that a gearbox oil isn't turning to soupy, acidic pulp and/or we don't have bearings that are suddenly running at 150 centigrade. Particularly from a UK perspective, the amusingly named BINDT (British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing) accredits trainers in line with ISO 18436, but the only nearby/known provider is more oriented toward oil analysis, which is interesting but not as practical as I'd ideally hoped. Much more appropriate-sounding is the International Council for Machinery Lubrication (ICML), who offers an ISO 18436-aligned certification scheme - Machinery Lubrication Technician (MLT). ICML posted:These individuals must demonstrate skills in the day-to-day activities associated with proper lubrication of machinery. Level I is oriented toward lubrication basics and the proper application and storage of lubricant. Level II is directed toward advanced understanding of lubrication fundamentals, lubricant selection and lubrication schedule and program management. I've located a firm that provides training in the UK, getting the idea that Noria Corp. is the big one in the US - they do offer an online course though. Already taken the steps of trying to get in touch with MLT-qualified people on the ICML's list and asking them for feedback, waiting to see. Are these schemes junk? Will this dark and slippery path lead to a life of abject misery ending only when the quantities of competing lithium and calcium complex greases in my bloodstream conflict and congeal, stopping my heart? At the minute I'm most interested in the lubrication side but if anybody has experience with other forms of condition monitoring, please tell me more!

If your hippie gf is under 30 you should use coconut oil, if she's over 30 grapeseed oil, due to the generationally shifting preferences for butt oils among hippie girls.

And if she's right on the cusp you gotta blend? Sound advice but you forget about the near-universal compatibility and intergenerational appeal of sweet almond oil.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer, with a Masters in Tribology. People just ask me what is wrong with their washing machine, all the time. I ask them what it sounds like just to hear a poor imitation of a washing machine which needs a £7 bearing replaced, then tell them it's hosed, make the drum into a fire pit and go and buy a new one.

Ohnonotme posted:I'm a Mechanical Engineer, with a Masters in Tribology. I can appreciate the academic side of things certainly; but my initial interest would be more practical. What was your specific area of study? If the entire new washing machine at retail costs £100 there's a wager to be made that the bearing being considerably less than 7% of the BoM. I mean, Jesus Christ, it's not going to the moon! It's just combining electricity and water, and is left to operate unsupervised in the home. And somehow expected to operate perfectly for the next twenty years with zero maintenance. PromethiumX posted:you'll be a monkey in a blue jumpsuit with a grease gun. This is a pretty accurate description as we speak; I'm aspiring to be a competent monkey in a blue jumpsuit Top tip - if you feel that oil is too "processed" and removed from nature just smear on some guacamole and you're good to go (just don't add any smoked paprika beforehand)

It took me a while to understand what mechanical maintenance has to do with human group dynamics but then I googled tribology.
