I liked Finn but didn't like him holding his own in a lightsaber battle with a jedi. I liked poe but he was the most gary stu character in the entire movie and the most ridiculously great pilot ever who did everything and killed the death star 3. I liked the film but thought it had some pretty dumb things, and that it was really poorly paced and handling of Hans death was weird. I thought Carrie fisher as Leia was awful and awkward. I enjoyed the film and I'm sorry I don't love absolutely everything about it and that upsets people badly in the thread where we make fun of dumb star wars things

I really did think the answer was "because she's a woman." Now I'm thinking it's "because she's new." Probably because Luke progressed at a much more reasonable pace. The only thing he's unnaturally skilled at out the gate is flying. He has essentially zero force ability in the first movie besides making a lucky shot, and it takes him three movies to build up to the point he can directly challenge a sith. He even gets his rear end handed to him by said sith in the second film. Rey is not just a great pilot for no reason, but a skilled a fighter and mechanic. I don't really care about that though, it's the force stuff that is over the top. On her first day of realizing she's force sensitive she outdoes a sith in a mental battle, beats that sith again in close combat, and masters Mind Trick to the degree that it's basically Mind Control with 45 seconds of practice. To my knowledge she is the only person (on screen) in Star Wars who is overtly powerful in the force without any training or experience whatsoever, and it's just kind of silly. Even when Anakin or Luke are spoken of being "strong in the force" it only manifests in abstract ways like "made a good shot" or "drove pod racer good" at first. It's not until they receive actual training and experience that they can fight well or wield overt force powers. But Rey apparently masters the spectrum of force powers on her first day as a jedi.

Also to clarify I don't "hate her character" like a lot of strawman bashers here seem to equate any criticism with. I just think she's unreasonably paced. That's all.

TBF if lightsabers and other Jedi relics are Horcruxes now, it's probably reasonable to assume Rey's powers to match a trained Sith Lord in mental combat is parallel to Harry potter's baby powers outdoing Voldemort. I mean that's essentially what's happening. I won't blame them from cribbing Harry Potter. It was a great set of books and movies. But, yeah, that's something that could actually be laid at the feet of Lucas (and, like I said, they completely abandon it in the second film). It's a bit of dialogue that could have been written much better, like "There's two types of Sith: a master and an apprentice" and just left it at that instead of dealing in absolutes.
