I really enjoy seeing how you two approach the same scene. Both amazing shots.

I don't see the point of interest in either of these. They're both nominally lit so there's nothing interesting happening with the lighting. Both "subjects" (which may be more subjective on my part that I'm simply not interested by a plain building, whether it's these photos or many of the others posted in this thread) are dead center so the composition isn't alluring.

There are some nice long shadows from the time of day. Maybe try to accentuate these to give an interesting perspective or to create a mood. And make sure you've got something going on in at least one of the intersection of thirds, and that the rest of the picture helps lead the viewer to it.

the second one has kind of an optical illusion where the Pamela's Original Crafts sign appears to be attached to the pole holding up the gas station, which is neat

The fundamental thing you're missing is that the subject is not the hotel or the sign but the space both are occupying.

Pretty much this. I often struggle with how to properly frame and compose a shot, but most often I'm aiming to convey the mood and sense of place.

Here's a cropped shot that follows the rule of thirds, because frame spacing hosed the top of the image :(

Do you guys ever have run ins with people or cops doing night photography? I was almost robbed when some guy tried to straight up snatch my tripod (I was too close to a strip club, my fault). And cops are constantly harassing me about what i'm doing.

Maybe i just need to move.

Edit: Daytona Beach, FL for reference.

I've done stuff in the most run-down places in Vancouver and have never had a problem. The only cop I've had approach me outside of photographing near crime scenes for work just wanted to chat about my gear.
