Nah, I was lazy and did some multiband compressing on the lot where I should have bandpassed some parts and just upped the level on others. Just rolling off would lose essential stuff too. But sometimes you're just sick of listening to the same thing over and over and you want to get it finished so you can move on.

To be fair, you've been due this for a fair while. I'm not really into the genre of stuff you make but I like every single thing I've heard from you and I've heard much worse in northern England clubs. May say a lot more about northern English clubs than anything else though lol.

I think it sounds pretty good to be honest. Crunchy rather than harsh. I think the lead at 4 minutes-ish lets the rest of the track down a bit, but this is a cool dramatic piece!

I don't know what you're worried about, the sound design is great and really interesting throughout. I really like the fake tom sounds at the beginning and throughout, are they from your modular also? The vibe almost reminds me of some of Mark Morgan's stuff from the first fallout games.

That's amazing, congrats man! Listened to the EP on soundcloud, top notch productions too imo. Really enjoyed Manatee

I just dropped a new ambient album the other day. It's a bunch of tracks I wrote with a pretty minimal setup of guitar (and a bit OP-1 and Eurorack) ran through some effects pedals. I recorded everything on a Tascam Portastudio. Found this setup incredibly fun for doing ambient music.

Haha, that was totally subconcious but I was listening to those again not too long before I made that. On that it's only some background noises from the modular - i'm having a lot of fun with it and have hours and hours of recordings from it, but any files using it heavily are still in the 30-60s sketch phase. it makes working much slower, so I have to whip out the vsts for ones like the above.
Thank you though :)
I feel like getting a modular has made me much better at working with vsts. I'm much more precise with my levels and the tone of the sounds now.

I did make an ambient track with the modular last week - https://soundcloud.com/downpour/0005-9-audio
Tried to 'play it' using PP and lots of knob turning to go on a little journey through sounds. its so much fun.

stickyfngrdboy - your poo poo is good man! I'm the same as you - this is a hobby that each year I get less and less time to spend on, but every time I do something it gets a little better than the things I did before. I'm digging this. Has some shades of Vangelis' Blade Runner soundtrack which is definitely a vibe that I'm into.

What modular system do you have? I'm toying with picking up a small semi-modular at some point, maybe that new Moog Mother-32. Seems nice as it's not a huge investment and with the Eurorack compatibility I can expand down the road if I want.

I started with a make noise shared system and an MI elements - since then i've sold off the echophon and phonogene from the original MN line up, got an MI peaks & erica dtech vcf, and I have a DIY MI clouds on the way. still got 4hp left over.

selling off the echophon & phonogene has paid for the peaks, dtech & clouds with a little left over, modules hold their value well so i'm definitely glad I went with a system that worked as a full instrument. helped me figure out what i needed much quicker, gave me a range to try things and realize I didn't need them etc.

it's a slippery slope. I thought i'd be good with this but i'm currently sketching out ideas to build a custom, folding 13u case with the same desk footprint as the current case, with the plan to salvage nearly everything from the MN - the cv bus, power, rails, latches and handle are all coming. the only thing left over will be a couple pieces of wood.
At least one of the reasons i'm diy'ing is because I know I wont be done for at least 6 months and it'll stop me spending money on other things. but then it'll be done and i'll have 6u to fill...

I've been wanting to dive into electronic music production for a while and now that my '09 Macbook Pro is dying and the year is turning over I figure there's no better time to get Logic than now!

I do have a logistical question, though: would an Air be strong enough to handle production, or should I spring for the Pro? I really like the size and weight of the Air as I use my laptop for pretty much all my computing, and I've heard that the only real disadvantage the Air has is a lack of ports, which can always be rectified with port splitters/addons, but I wanted to get some goon testimony on whether I'd be shooting myself in the foot or not.

May 12, 2001

If you're going to stick with dual-core / a smaller laptop, I think the Air is not too far behind the 13" Pro in performance, so if the form factor is important to you then go for it.

Personally I'd prefer a quad core which means the 15" pro, but it just depends on what plugins you use and your tolerance for bouncing / freezing / resampling.

Form factor and cost, really – the price jump from Air to Pro is about enough to buy another Air entirely, and I'm fine doing fiddly stuff because of system constraints. I assume going for 8GB of memory is pretty much necessary too, but even at Apple's inflated RAM costs it'd be easier to take than the Pro.

Thanks for the advice! Hopefully I'll sum up the courage to post what I'm making sooner rather than later.

I'm so disoriented, I keep sitting down to write music and actually having things that sound good come out.

I made a trance remix of an Undertale song (more of the core motif that runs through many of the songs from that game) and it turned out pretty well:

Undertale - Memory Remix

I've hit that point where I'm lost. It sounds good to me, but something also seems missing. Does it need more variation? Should I add another section? Another instrument? Maybe it just needs a little polish somewhere?

I find myself in this place more often nowadays, which must mean I've hit a new level at least.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the various version of the Novation Launchpad? A friend offered me an original LaunchPad for £60 but while I was tryign to figure out if this was a good deal I discovered that the Mk2 Mini can be had new for £70 which seemed like a better deal, but I wasn't sure about the size, whether it would feel too dinky. Then I realised that the full size Mk2 can be had for about £120 and that has cool RBG buttons and poo poo and I've got some Amazon vouchers that would cover it and now I'm tied up in knots.

I only wanted something cool to supplement my Axiom Pro. I'm don't even do a lot of electronic production, we're just looking to introduce some live electronic stuff into our band and thought something like the LaunchPad would be cool for triggering samples and things.

If you have Ableton or FL studio, it's fantastic. If you don't have either of those, i'm not sure. It was voted top midi instrument on some site for 2015 though. So it's definitely solid. For FL studio it has other presets that might be useful, things like mixing in 8 step intervals, a keyboard, transport controls, and some instrument specific presets. I assume it's similar for ableton. If you want to trigger samples and don't care about sensitivity, it's the best thing out there for sure. The launchpad 2 does have velocity sensitivity if that matters to you.

I meant launchpad pro has velocity sensitivity. Looks like MK2 doesn't, but there was some blog that said it would in June. So I probably confused myself. Either way, I have a Launchpad mini and if you just want to trigger samples and don't care about how good it looks I would recommend that. The only difference between the mini and mk2 is size, LED colors, and the control buttons. Although more color options would be awesome.

Is there anything that's a modern equivalent to the Korg MicroKontrol?

I would like a small controller to take out & about and a key feature is BUILD QUALITY, something with a solid case and knob heads that will not fall off if you look at them funny. Velocity sensitive keys, a small bank of faders and knobs, a few buttons, that's all I need.

I'm tempted to just buy a used MicroKontrol but I don't love buying used out-of-production stuff if there's another good alternative.
