   I'm mainly showing off a rarity – a properly supported attack!  Its another dull day in the air, but we kill another Vildebeest!  It looks like we can take Rabaul!   We begin advancing again here. It takes a long time for people to walk forwards in this game, so we will see bursts of activity. Can someone explain why Rabaul is such a prize? I know it was important in real life, and seems to be important to Grey, so is it just a prime location?

It's able to be upgraded to be a fairly large naval base and it's within range of the Australian east coast and Australia -> USA shipping lines. So it gives a close naval base that threatens any efforts to invade Indonesian holdings

In real life, a major reason why it was important was that it was the major Japanese base during the Guadalcanal campaign. In the game, its importance depends on how far the Japanese push. That being said, in allied hands it definitely becomes a problem, since it means they're suddenly in strategic bomber range of Truk.

In Japanese hands, planes operating off Rabaul can hit both Port Moresby and Guadalcanal, and seizing either of those in turn will put Japanese planes in range of hitting shipping bound for Australia's east coast. From the Allied perspective, it can be tricky to approach and assault because your own planes won't have the range to suppress Rabaul, so any operations in the Solomon islands to contest moves towards Port Moresby and/or Guadalcanal will have to involve carriers if you want air cover. EDIT: In a broader sense, a fair number of the critical battles of WW2 in the Pacific were around these points where you couldn't just leapfrog from one land-based air umbrella to the other, since that would force the navies to come out and play. I don’t think the Japanese ever intended that there should be a ”Guadalcanal Campaign”, in the sense that it should be necessary to defend it the way they had to. But because of their failed invasion of Port Moresby and the following surprise allied landings on and around Guadalcanal, it developed into one. Rabaul became very important for them. As is pointed out here Rabaul had a great potential for expansion. How great is shown by the fact that the allied decided to bypass it when they finally went north. If the Port Moresby invasion had succeeded Rabaul would probably have developed more into a staging area for holding Port Moresby and Milne Bay and eventual jumps over to New Caledonia and Vanuatu/Fiji than Guadalcanal, depending on the question whether the allies would have dared to go for the Solomons if the Japanese held Port Moresby and Milne Bay. That may have changed US priorities. MacArthur, for one, would probably have insisted on this. That said, having Port Moresby in their hold wouldn’t necessarily have been such a bonus for the Japanese as long as they had to supply it over the sea. To improve the Kokoda Trail as a useful supply route would necessarily have taken some time. In the meantime an air and submarine offensive based on Western Australian bases could have made the supplying of PM costly for the Japanese. Imagine if the US forces built up for the Solomons campaign had been directed that way instead. As the Japanese alternative for the missed seaborne invasion of PM, the advance from Gona along the Kokoda Trail, started to get into gear, they also landed in Milne Bay on the South-Eastern tip of New Guinea, an area that could have proved as important as Port Moresby as a forward base against Australia. Here, however, Australian forces, after little more than two weeks of fighting, were able to throw the Japanese invasion forces back. They withdrew on September 7th 1942, one month after the US landings on Guadalcanal. This was the first decisive setback on land for the Japanese. It has been little noted, probably because of the ongoing battle for Guadalcanal. Milne Bay in Japanese hands could have been very awkward for the allies at that early stage. As it turned out their advance along the Kokoda Trail also petered out, after some very heavy and costly fighting for both parties. In this period came to light the Japanese problem that was predicted by US military analysts already before the war – that Japanese resources were not sufficient to maintain more than one main campaign beside their engagement in China. Unfortunately, this analysis was not heeded in the chock after Pearl Harbor and the Philippines, resulting in a slower US offensive reaction than necessary. But, that is still to show itself in this “campaign”.

The supply issue is also one of the big reasons why the Japanese attack on Midway was a lost cause from the word go. Even if the Japanese had defeated the US fleet, and if they had then actually invaded and taken the islands (the second was a very big if), they never could have kept it supplied.

One of the best parts of Shattered Sword was when it talked about how the Japanese didn't have any doctrine for shore bombardment support of amphibious landings, nor did they have doctrine for air support of amphibious landings, and then any invasion of Midway would require the invaders to wade through a couple hundred yards of hip-deep water, at which point they'd find themselves on the business end of a US Armored unit.

Regarding Midway, it was actually the other way: the entire offensive was at the same time hideously badly planned and overplanned: it employed a whole lot of ships in a general plan while the four carriers and their escorts were essentially the tip of the spear. Most ships involved in the whole offensive didn't really do poo poo and all they did was waste a bunch of fuel up north.

  Fleeing, bringing in fresh supplies? We will never know. Not that it matters.  This was defiantly fresh troops. drat.  Rare good air combat report!  The Clark Field defences will take some time to crack.   Picking off the odd ship is not going to do much in the long run, but its good for morale. And we get the occasional troop ship.  The Kido Butai has refuelled and is now sweeping towards Singapore – the plan was to cause terror, the first terror is mine! We get off lightly however.  We take a good toll on the Vildebeest today.  Its tempting to shock attack here to take advantage of their poor organisation!  Hmm, the Kido Butai didn't launch any strike fighters. I should check their planes to make sure they are ready for naval combat.  And yes, they were all stikll set for Port attack – I thought they'd been quiet! DAMMIT GREY YOU IDIOT!  There were not many guns at Rabual, but they were very accurate.

24 knots is a significant speed drop. Maybe they can fix some of that engine damage en-route, but it's an irritation if there are cruiser squads doing crazytimes or subs out there. Would be nice to know if those 9 hits on the Java were from the 14" of the BBs or the 5" guns of the destroyers.
