<75% of our AO in Afghanistan couldn't be covered by the same kind of mounted patrols we did in Iraq. Irrigation canals were all over and typically crossed by mud foot-bridges, tree branches (gently caress these), or jumping (and falling in, so gently caress jumping too) I carried a LAW for 2 months or so before I got a 203. We had a "2 sources of HE" requirement for any patrol loadout, not counting grenades. Apparently Talibs will stand up against SAW suppression but have a healthy fear of explosions. LAWs are cool.

That was poo poo that got wheeled in. Sometimes we'd strap a a CG round to a Kommando's back here and there but if you asked me? poo poo on that poo poo.

We strap the CG to pack frames with the loader for each cannon usually carrying four grenades with additional carrying coming from the rest of the support squad. Don't skip cardio days, guys at least in the wintertime we load them into pulkkas and pull them through the snow.

In all fairness it's probably gone through a lot of upgrades in its ammo so it's not really a fair comparison. The original bazooka would probably be decent with modern day munitions.

I'm ashamed I don't know being a former 11bangbang, but is it just the advent of shaped charges that make modern ATGMs so effective against tanks? Edit: not just ATGMs, but all rocket propelled anti tank stuff.

Mike-o posted:I'm ashamed I don't know being a former 11bangbang, but is it just the advent of shaped charges that make modern ATGMs so effective against tanks? The Kornet can make over 1000 to 1300 mm of RHA penetration with tandem HEAT missiles. A T-72B with Kontakt 5 ERA maxes out at 1180 mm RHA equivalent at the thickest point on the turret, so a Kornet will blow a T-72 to smithereens if it hits. It's actually rated at higher RHA equivalent for HEAT than APFSDS; HEAT is good, but a super fast sabot is better. At least part of this is because a lot of the armor advances we're using now (like ERA and composite armor) affect the HEAT jet even more than they affect a kinetic penetrator. One big advantage to HEAT is that range doesn't matter. It'll penetrate the same no matter how far the warhead has to fly, so you can launch a guided missile with a super fat warhead from a hidden position 2 miles away and not lose a single millimeter of penetration when it reaches the target. You can also use very low-velocity warheads like rockets that fly slow enough to be seen as they travel through the air, which is why we were able to make Bazookas effective in the first place while still being easy to carry.

Many years ago got shot at while I was traipsing through dense bush while pig hunting. Sporadic SKS fire in your general direction from parties unknown is not the greatest time I've ever had, let alone having someone get a bead on you with the intent to put a bullet in your gulliver you can keep that poo poo thankyou. Any way you'd think illegal weed farmers would be more chill but nope.
