This thread has brought back so many memories. I'm old enough to have lived through the following: -Apple IIe in the classroom where I killed many deer on the Oregon Trail -The Commodore VIC-20/Commodore 64 era where you played Spy vs. Spy and showed off your l33t programming skills in BASIC on the demo unit at the mall by having it scroll "Insert Name was here!" -Computer Summer Camp at Radio Shack on the TRS-80 -486SX/25 with 2400 baud modem where you could look at a porn jpeg one line at a time -The joy of getting your PIII 550 Gateway 2000 in the Holstein box so you could play Rise of the Triad when you weren't in a chatroom on Compuserve. -The amazement of getting free music on Napster and Audiogalaxy and it only taking 30 minutes to download one song. -Spending a huge amount of time downloading the newest version of Internet Explorer and then using it to see what giant leap forward they had in each version. -I remember playing Counter Strike on a cable modem when Roadrunner first came to Orlando. Playing against people who were using dial-up still was like something straight out of the Matrix. Those were the days.

Epic Pinball was great but I remember thinking most other Epic games were a bit ordinary. That said, I played the poo poo out of Jill of the Jungle. A large portion of my childhood was spent on these two: Slightly later, but The Neverhood had its moments.

I remember looking at their stupid little "block" pages to see who my neighbors were Mine was a page all about my virtual pets, which came from websites saying "download this drawing of a guinea pig and put it on your website and it's a virtual pet!" Universe Master posted:poo poo I just kept it pushed down to make my games go faster. You were supposed to; it was there to make it possible to play games that used the CPU speed for timing (making it possible to move your guy around without him instantly zooming into death on either side of the screen). There was a bug in the runtime of the Turbo Pascal compiler which would time your CPU by running a loop for a number of iterations and then use the amount of time to scale waiting. It didn't work so well when CPUs could run thru the loop in 0 seconds, causing a divide by zero error. That could for a period of time be circumvented by pressing the Turbo button as well.

Legendary mainboard manufacturer: PC CHIPS. In the 486 and Socket 7 era, they made boards with fake cache chips, fake chipsets (reverse engineered UMC chipset but marked as ALi with a sticky label!) and then in the Slot1 era, they made boards which weren't capable of running 100MhZ FSB Pentium 2s (despite claiming otherwise), they were painfully slow. I've had six M726 boards of theirs in my workshop. One worked fine, four were complete duds (wouldn't POST) one worked fine for a few weeks but then the voltage regulator died, and one board had a defective southbridge which coudln't cope with 100MhZ FSB, causing data transmission errors from the HDD. I "solved" the problem by disabling the HDD controller and putting in an ISA paddle card from a 386. These boards had very questionable Winbond BIOS EEPROMs, you could reflash the bios in theory but you had a good chance of failing the flash due to data errors which would just garble the data on the chip. No wonder PC CHIPS went out of business the moment Internet became common, despite the fact that they hid themselves under a bazillion of trade names (Amptron, Aristo, VXpro, BXcel and others) people grew wary of them and the sales plummeted, which served them right.
