Speaking of Kesmai; anybody remember the online game service "GameStorm"? :10bux: a month and it got you some pretty funky little games.

Aliens Online and Splatterball were my main jam, but it had a cool mage FPS and some weird online Godzilla game but I can't remember much about it.

Optimized with MemMaker for MS-DOS only (nwlite)
Optimized with MemMaker for Windows
Optimized for EMS (F-15 III, Harrier, Tornado and Falcon 3.0)
Plain DOS optimized for EMS (F-14 FD)
Plain DOS optimized for XMS (GameTools)
Plain MS-DOS
Plain MS-DOS with MS-Mouse Driver
Default configuration without DOS=HIGH and C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /l:500 /f:5100
Soft-ICE Debugger

For those that don't know about these awesome things:
nwlite = NetWare Lite
GameTools = Simple DOS TSR that let you search through memory to find values that changed so you then edit memory to cheat at your game

I found another menu which had an entry for Slackware ZipSlack Linux, which is a Linux distribution that you could install into your FAT filesystem, which was good since I didn't have enough disk space to set aside a whole partition for Linux

I liked his Oceania song more.

ah I almost mentioned that but I couldn't think of a good way to describe it. the voice sample is really distinct in my head though. iirc it spawned infinite windows of itself until it crashed your computer so that the audio would get stuck looping most of the time until you could scramble for a hard reset.

I still kind of remember the url. It was something like comp-u-geek.net and people would give it out as a response when someone asked for computer help. I'd look it up on the way back machine but I don't feel like freezing my PC.

Do modern computers even still have PC speakers? The only time I hear that kind of sound on mine is when I play old DOS games through Dosbox, and I get the feeling that is emulated using the on-board sound device.

It used javascript to infinitelly spawn windows every time one was closed, and the audio sample I remember "Hey everybody, I'm looking at gay porn!" Knowing how to use the task manager was helpful, as was keeping the sound muted as a matter of course on your work machine. I think there was another variation that used "You are an idiot. Hahahahahaha."

The original Rickroll site used javascript to pop up windows with song lyrics in sequence, but just as many as needed for the song - if you clicked them through fast enough you could get rid of it pretty quickly.

Then the girl comes out of the room screaming "I'M NOT, I'M REALLY NOT, SOMEONE FIX THIS!" and stuff and we all were laughing at her until she physically yanked the plug out and it stopped. Aw.

For the rest of the year people were telling her to stop looking at gay porno so much.

I seem to recall a small bit that might have added to its popularity was that character design was similar to the then relatively new South Park, which I think prompted a few people to call it a South Park game.

Also, icebox.com
Home of all sorts of flash animation that was super hot 16 years ago. I seem to recall it had an additional novelty of some known actors contributing voices for series, but I don't think anything ever really caught on.

Same. I played Prince of Persia on an 8MHz XT clone with Hercules (mono) graphics and PC speaker. Couldn't get to the room with the skeleton on level 3 (I think) - couldn't run fast enough across the level to get there before the gate closed. Once I finally could, that skeleton that came to life almost gave me a heart attack.

If you consider about 4 years old to be modern, then yes, but I think not all machines have it. In fact, if I remember correctly I have a case that is about 6 years old which doesn't have a speaker in it (or anywhere to clip it in). You're way better off having it emulated because then you can control the volume, mute it, etc.

I remember how awesome it was when I got a Sound Blaster Pro and worked out I could connect the PC speaker output from the motherboard up to it and have that output come through my headphones and not sound as bad.
