DuckConference posted:why would you translate ARMv8 code, it's made to be pretty clean as-is oh poo poo, you're right. nvidia's custom core used to do instruction translation but it looks like they dumped that (because it was so bad) and went with standard arm cores. that was an epic waste of resources. so it looks like I found the problem: quote:Intelligent algorithms analyze workloads presented by the operating system to dynamically switch between the high performance and low performance cores to deliver optimal performance and power efficiency. they tried this with their stupid companion core back with cortex a9 and it was a miserable failure. they ended up disabling it and always running on the fast cores and burning a ton of power. their big and little cores don't share an L2, so every transition will require a full cache clean and fill. A53/57 don't support hardware migration so they would need to do a full core shutdown and power up. basically their algorithm would try its best not to switch cores because it's a huge perf hit.

DuckConference posted:why would you translate ARMv8 code, it's made to be pretty clean as-is the reason they did this is so that they could design a fast in-order core and push the task of instruction reordering and dependency tracking to software. this worked about as well as you imagine

The Management posted:lmao, I can't believe they did it again. this is a fundamental design flaw of the looks like they abandoned the denver core so who the gently caress knows why it's stuttering besides being android The Pixel C is the first device we've come across to run Nvidia's Tegra X1 SoC. The X1 dumps Nvidia's "Denver" CPU and goes with off-the-shelf cores from ARM, so you get a 64-bit 1.9Ghz processor with four high-power Cortex-A57 cores and four low-power Cortex-A53 cores. In benchmarks, it scores about as high as a Snapdragon 810, another chip made with off-the-shelf ARM cores.

it's probably the 4+4 core setup with low and high power cores. iirc several phone manufacturers tried that with their phones back in 2012-2013, found it didn't appreciably improve battery life but did cause performance issues and dropped it from phones that had it for the asian and european markets before they went on sale in the american market you're pretty much always better off with a single set of cores and them being configured to smoothly clock down as needed, rather then making full jumps between different sets of cores

f i'm ever unaccountably rich i think i would want to build a dungeon but wouldn't because people would assume it was a sex dungeon and i'd have to always be all "no, it's a normal dungeon, there's no sex in the dungeon" but nobody would believe me. i don't think i could deal with that.

just build two, the sex dungeon and the non-sex dungeon. you don't have to use the former.

I was driving today and came to an intersection at the same time as a google self driving car. it had the right of way, but I realized that it will defer if I make a move, so I just went ahead and took his turn. and it's not like there's a driver inside who is getting upset at what a dick I've been, so everybody wins.

speaking of which, I saw one the other day create a deadlock by refusing to go over a speed bump until the car in the opposing lane crossed it. but that car was waiting on the car in front of it to turn left, which it could have if the idiot Google car kept driving and let the cars behind it clear the lane.
