For example take the hypothesis: People in general are very lenient toward police abuse in part due to many cop drama plot lines focusing on "hero cop bending the rules" to catch the "obviously guilty guy" who's about to skate on a technicality.

I wonder how true stuff like that is.

It's a recognized problem that juries now expect forensic evidence to look like it does on CSI.

If the abuse were going towards rich, powerful men? I might think that had a hand in it. But poor black youths aren't ever getting off on technicalities concocted by slick lawyers.

That's not really true, though. One man's lawyer-concocted technicality is another man's constitutional violation.

The example was Hollywood though. Everything from Lethal Weapon 2's "Diplomatic Immunity" to any of the Beverly Hills Cop movies, were all about Rich people who were untouchable by the law.

Sure, in reality a rich man who has his rights violated in the process of bringing him down will get away with it. Though I still doubt that young black men whose rights are often violated are getting off without some serious luck intervening.

Yeah, that's rooted in the late-80s/early-90s anxiety surrounding the economic slowdown along with the very public, very punchable yuppie/investment banker face. If you drop back to the mid-70s and such you find a lot more "fear of radicals/gangs," which also comes back around in the early-90s after the riots in LA. Hollywood tends to reflect the brewing anxieties of society.

"California becomes the first state to allow family members to ask a judge to remove firearms from a relative who appears to pose a threat. Democrats proposed the legislation in response to a deadly 2014 rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Victims' relatives said the parents of 22-year-old Elliot Rodger were blocked from seeking help for their troubled son before the rampage.

A separate new law requires that certain airsoft BB guns and pellet guns come with bright markings to distinguish them from real firearms.

Another law extends a ban on concealed weapons at K-12 schools and community colleges, removing an exemption that previously allowed people with concealed weapons permits to carry firearms on school grounds."

I googled "california gun law" and yeah the entire first page or results was Daily Caller, Fox Nation, Newsmax, WND, Washinton Times, etc. but on the second page I found

quote:

Passed in response to the 2014 Isla Vista massacre that killed Martinez’s 20-year-old son, Christopher Michaels-Martinez of Los Osos, it will allow law enforcement or family members to seek restraining orders suspending gun ownership for people who pose a threat to themselves or others. In the aftermath of the Isla Vista shooting, victims and authorities were haunted by the revelation that the family of killer Elliot Rodger had expressed concerns to mental health workers. Sheriff’s deputies dispatched to Rodger’s apartment departed without touching the three handguns he had legally obtained.

“In many instances — Isla Vista, Tucson, the Navy Yard — family members saw red flags which indicated their family member may be unstable,” Martinez said. The restraining orders “give families and law enforcement a tool they didn’t previously have in these situations where someone is mentally unstable and a substantial danger to others

The sheriff of rural Mendocino County, Allman considers himself a Second Amendment stalwart. He adamantly supports the right to carry concealed weapons. He still supports the new law, drawing on reasons both professional and personal.

“I don’t think a week can go by that we can’t attribute some type of gun violence to a mental health situation,” Allman said, adding of his brother’s death: “I don’t know if this specific bill would have prevented this from happening, but it certainly would have been an option for my family and I to consider.”

I wrote my master's thesis on the book of Job and it's seriously one of my favorite books. It's a fascinating book open to a ton of different theological and philosophical interpretations beyond just 'Eh God does what God wants'.

Though if you want a fun time, one of my professors showed me how to read the Book of Jonah as a satire of the prophet stories, about an entitled jerk who is continually annoyed that the sinners keep breaking the script and repenting or the pagan sailors act with greater morality than he until God scolds him for being a jerk.

He's definitely using Evangelical vocabulary; "sacrificial gift" is the term often used for Jesus's death on the cross, or for pastors asking for money in the offering plate. This is the first time I've seen it used for a political campaign. :staredog:

The actual probable cause for the arrest is in there. How strong is that case? It seems to unfortunately be based on the victim's statements and conversations with the victim's mom which doesn't seem to make for a very strong case against what will likely be a very good defense. I mean, the only thing worse in this situation than no charges is for him to be acquitted.
