Authorman and I are talking in the dubtrack channel (to which all of you should join), and he posed an interesting question for me:

Is a burrito a sandwich?

My kneejerk was to say no, a sandwich can't be one cohesive thing of bread/tortilla/whatever, it has to be two separate ones. But then he brought up the classic hoagie, which is indisputably a sandwich despite only being one piece. That makes me think hot dogs are sandwiches, too, which is weird to say - it doesn't feel right on the tongue that's for sure. But I still think sandwiches need to be bread bread, not tortillas, but where is the line drawn? Whole wheat wraps are pretty close to just being thin bread after all, and those are only a skip away from tortillas.

I do not know the answer mafia thread. Do you have it?

see this is my thinking too but when does a wrap become a sandwich? does a sandwich need 3 or more open sides?

This. A wrap is a 360' covering while a sandwich covers on two planes.

There is no way you are telling me a chicago hot dog isn't a loving sandwich. It's bread. It's meat. It's tomatoes and onions and poo poo. It's mustard. That's a sandwich.

If then, when does a hot dog stop being a sandwich? It has everything but veggies. Are veggies crucial to sandwiches? Does a grilled cheese (sandwich) only become one with a slice of tomato? When does the madness end?

Tacos aren't sandwiches because the are tacos.

Hot Dogs are sandwiches because it's a sausage (the hot dog) sandwiched between bread.

Oh wait I think in my canon, I think I think that cheese is a vegetable. I guess this is a new fork in the canon. This is C canon now. For cheese.

Anyway I just want to say that I like cities because they are cool and filled with mostly cool people. And food. I wish the woods had tons of interesting folk and halal sandwich shops. Where they serve schwarma and gyros and pizzas which spoiler alert are also sandwiches unless you determine the definition of a sandwich with a protractor you loving nerdbag. 180 degrees is still some degree of bread covering cheese and veggies and meats. Ha ha ha eat poo poo mafia thread welcome to the discussion topic that will tear you to pieces.

Agreed.

This is a hoagie. It is two slices of bread with things in between them. Two planes. Therefore: sandwich. Where are you trying to dispute Podima's Sandwich Theorem?

Oh, I see your point. Fair enough, under those terms a hotdog would be a sandwich as would an uncut hoagie - two planes of coverage pivoting on a single corner - while a taco would not, as that is three planes of coverage.

if you look at the other side you will find that many/most/all? hoagies are actually just one roll cut most of the way open so they form a flap, not a full separate breads.

Burritos are not sandwiches. If it is wrapped 360 degrees its not a sandwich.

I'm not a strict "two planes" guy for my sandwiches, for example a subway sandwich is three sides bread. But I know what a sandwich isn't and a burrito definitely falls in that category.

I would argue that hot dogs aren't sandwiches either, they're hot dogs which are their own thing. If you put a hot dog between two pieces of bread, I would call that a lovely hot dog before I would call it a hot dog sandwich. Different story if the hot dog is cut up like salami in the sandwich but I've never seen that done.

OK that's my thread contribution for the next few months!
