I wonder if the structure of an old fashioned biplane would be hard enough to set off the HE charge in modern aircraft cannons. A burst of 20 or 30mm to a Fokker would be a great way to make a bunch of sawdust.

They'd probably be pretty difficult to gun down though. Rather small to begin with, huge speed differences, minimal radar signature for the automatic ranging... Not to mention the relative agility.

I wont how big the IR signature would be. It would be hilariously low power/energy output compared with the stuff it normally targets but there's absolutely no attempt to minimise the signature. It would probably be like trying to lock onto a lawn mower.

It's not. Planes with single fabric layers didn't set off cannon rounds in WW2.

The thing with modern cannons is that even if they don't it only takes exactly one round to hit a stud, screw or whatever and that's it.

Did some testing of the scaling and found that field of view does effect it. I noticed that if I zoomed all the way in on some con-trails I couldn't even see a black dot for planes at 50km, but if I zoomed all the way out (which hurts your eyes because argh 330' fov) I could see the imposter models, albeit distorted.

Now that frame rate is way better I played around with triplehead and trying to fix bezels. There is a simple viewDx change that can be made in the MonitorSetup/3Cameras.lua file. It's handy if you don't want to run in eyefinity/surround mode all the time or have to change to it when you want to play jets. It only works as a way of bezel correction if you select 3Cameras in the settings, not for 1Camera - that way requires configuring bezel correction in your video drivers. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=99931

In some ways it's easier to just learn the TARGET scripting language. You'll also be learning C++ coincidentally so that's a double plus.

So I downloaded the 1.5 beta and am installing DCS for the first time in over a year. I assume my modules (IE: aircraft) I also own need to be downloaded and are compatible with it?

Also, I just ordered a new monitor, a Dell U3415W widescreen curved, 3440x1440. I assume it will have no problem with that resolution? Running a 980ti.

E: So I installed 1.5, and the A10C module which I also downloaded is looking for 1.2 in order to install.

I went to the module manager of 1.5 and it said I could download all my modules, but promptly timed out :(

ee: Went in to start it and it needs all sorts of updates, so I suspect that's it.

If you mean WW2 jets, then I don't think there's really anything beyond IL-2 and War Thunder (and War Thunder jets require many hours of grinding because they're the endgame of the free-to-play progression and have no "premium" shortcut).

For "early" as in post-WW2, DCS World has Sabre and MiG-15Bis modules.

Did 1.5 neutered the AI again or have I just never noticed how awful they can be? Tooting around in a Mig-21 four ship and order them to go finger four, one dude does a barrel roll over the top of me, goes nose down and stays that way all the way into the ground. Crossing the Caucus mountains to go gently caress up Georgia and pass between two peaks, another of my AI wingman flies straight and level right into the side of a mountain. All of them had their landing lights deployed and maintained this weird nose high posture the entire flight (Mig-21 AI always do this and have done it ever since this module was released).

Get into a tangle with some F-5E and do the Mig-21 thing, gotta go fast. Blow through them at Mach 1 and start a rather lazy 4g loop. Looking over my shoulder and all four Tigers have done these super hard lateral turns with vortices coming off the wings and everything, not even trying to point their noses at use for sidewinder shots. I come back down on top of them and these things have their noses all wobbling back and forth with no energy at all nearly stalling. They nearly looked like they were standing still in my gunsight. I figure its just a fluke and the units are set to 'Good' or something in the mission editor so I try it again againt Phantoms set to 'Excellent' and the same thing happens. They also never tried to fire their Sparrows and only shot a winder when I put myself right in front of their nose on purpose.

Aside from crashing perfectly good airplanes into the dirt my own AI wingman had no issue blasting the crap out of NATO's fighters even with their headlights popped out and ridiculous AoA. Might just be a problem with the older "on rails" aircraft modelling since AI Eagles have no trouble murdering me the moment get so much as a sniff of me on radar.

It's still available for sale of the Thirdwire site. It hasn't really dropped in price though.

Def get the NATO Fighters mod. Adds a ton of flyable planes. The old version (version 4) only needs Strike Fighters 2: Europe. The newer one (version 5) adds some more stuff but also needs SF 2: Israel and the two mini expansions.

Anyone seen any plans for building an 8020 extruded aluminum stand set for a Warthog/HOTAS system?

I cobbled something together with 1" PVC pipe a few years ago and it sort of works, but I'd like to build something a little better and tighter than plastic pipe.

There's also a pretty good LP of it on the LP Archives that goes through the fighters from throughout the decades. Fairly detailed and lengthy, gives great advice for playing.

MY LIFE FOR YOU!
So just curious, is FC3 worth picking up if I want to play some singleplayer SU-27 action? I have been somewhat avoiding it due to the lack of clickable cockpit. Is it a pain in the rear end to use, where you will have to memorize all of the keyboard shortcuts in order to turn on various relays for the startup proceedure? Also, is there some single player content for it?

The Su-27 is a low fidelity flight model. Starting it up is lighting the engines and turning on the lights if you want them.

There's a a campaign that comes with FC3 and another DLC campaign.

FC3 has pretty decent campaigns. I've played a number of the F-15C campaign and started they SU-27, they are well done. All of them start on the ground with engines off so it's the full take-off/landing routine. The missions are varied and have you usually running escort/patrol or taking out a specific target. The campaigns are scripted and follow a flight path. I enjoy FC3 a lot and the campaigns are worth it if you get it on sale.

More accurately, it has a low fidelity systems model but a high fidelity flight model. You can totally instakill your pilot and put the plane into an inverted flat spin do cobras and poo poo :v:

I've played through both of the official Su-27 campaigns, so I can tell you about them. There are also some player-made campaigns, probably!

Fortress Mozdok: Comes with FC3, 10 missions. The difficulty is pretty punishing as you'll regularly be up against teen-series fighters armed with AMRAAMs. On the plus side, you can die and still win the missions if the AI planes are successful. If you make it to the end you get to watch a Nimitz-class carrier get obliterated under a storm of anti-ship missiles

The Ultimate Argument: :10bux:, 20 missions. This one is much easier than Fortress Mozdok, mostly you'll be fighting F-4s and F-5s. The missions are more varied and there are a few where you do ground attack. I liked it, but it feels weird that they're selling this for more money than the actual Su-27 module.

In conclusion, FC3 is good and you should buy it.

^^ Have you spent more time trying to get someone else's config to work than you would have just making your own keyfile? There's documentation and helper apps in the Falcon 4 docs folder. Yes it suck. Yes its a game from 1998 being maintained by grognards that hate change and newbies.

This is how Mig-21 AI is currently strafing targets. It is admittedly effective.

That's definitely joystick order issues. You need to make sure the combined joystick/throttle is the first device.
