I hate our health care system and I also hate this bullshit rhetoric that comes from the news stations whenever the VA is mentioned. If this guy really wanted to rob a bank just for the healthcare he would have immediately turned himself in, he wouldn't have paid for his rent, and he wouldn't have tried to sell his place.

gently caress this guy for trying to use the VA as a scapegoat.

Yeah, if the guy had stolen a much smaller amount, $100 or something and turned himself in the same day, I'd find him much more sympathetic.

That said, it doesn't sound like the guy is 100% all there :smith:

That's pretty much already the case. THe standards are so low for prisoner health care that it's more about looking like they're giving care than it is about actually giving it.

Breshears said the health care in the federal prison system is equivalent to anything offered in a private hospital.

Yeah, from what it sounds like from the interviews of people around him, he definitely seems like he was a few birds short of a nest. It's more an indictment of a lack of proper mental health services, in addition to everything else that was wrong with the poor guy.

He was probably rejected by the VA because he was never a veteran. All the article says for sure is that he claimed to be, but he claimed a lot of things and nobody really believed it.

Depending on what news he listens to he probably does think prison healthcare is like what the Trumps of the world get. Compared to what he was likely getting before it probably is going to feel like the red carpet treatment.

My favorite part was probably the judge chiding the guy about his pride when realistically the truly prideful people around his age/circumstances overwhelmingly just commit suicide. It's like Boomer Bingo

Another reason Trump would have problems in the primary

quote:

Mr. Trump’s strength among traditionally Democratic voters could pose some problems for his campaign. Many states bar voters registered with the other party from participating in partisan primaries. Other states go further, not allowing unaffiliated voters to vote in a primary; in the G.O.P. race, for example, that would mean restricting the electorate to those registered as Republicans — one of Mr. Trump’s weakest groups. This group of states includes many favorable to Mr. Trump, like Florida, Pennsylvania and New York.

The article points out other reasons Trump support doesn't translate directly into primary success (akin to Bernie with respect to turnout of specific cohorts, etc.) and also goes into more detail about these registered Democrat Trump voters.

Echoing that them including the VA line without context is hosed up and reinforces the idea that the VA is a shitshow. That system has gone a long way to help the tens of millions of people that they're responsible for and issues are far fewer than they were under Bush and Clinton.

I've heard of Unitarianism but never looked too deeply into it. It sounds like all the positive aspects of liberal religious traditions (community, charity, social justice, etc.) with none of the judgmental or supernatural bullshit.

Which is why Texas tried to strip them of their tax exempt status a while back (and failed, thankfully).

WaPo article on the shakeup: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/12/31/ben-carsons-top-staffers-resign-in-a-delayed-campaign-shake-up/

quote:

The breaking point came two days before Christmas when Williams and Carson decided together to invite The Washington Post and The Associated Press to Carson’s Maryland mansion to talk about a staff shake-up—without Bennett’s knowledge. Bennett felt burned by Carson and that Williams was taking control of the campaign even though he was not formally part of it.
...
Reached at his northern Virginia office today, Williams said he heard about the shake-up on Twitter, not from Carson himself. He declined to comment on how money had been spent, and said he would refrain from further judgment on how Bennett and Watts performed.

Heh.
