Also, you only get lineups for one handedness because otherwise it would be double the images. You'll just have to trust McFreeze that he got it right, but he's good about that.

My Family Finally Left: The SLXVIII Feast Or Fired Division

Well that took a while! Sorry all, I've had family staying with me all week for the holidays so blah blah blah. Anyway, let's talk about the Feast or Fired division! Woo!

The Feast or Fired division is one of the two no-DH divisions in the Subpar League, which last season were basically terrible. In SLXVII, inky101's Gay Agenda managed to escape as the only above-.500 team in the division...at 82-80. All four of the remaining squads--the New York Winners, Antigua Unspecifieds, Mitt Romney's Outsourcing Kings, and South Shore Gumshoes--were dispatched with prejudice in the offseason. Now, five slots have been filled with a combination of two teams demoted from the SuperLeague and three others fresh from the Expansion Cup. Given the continued superiority of my DH league, it's highly likely that four of these five won't be back for SLIX. With that said, let's introduce the teams!

The venerable Florida Oranges have existed since season 4, with the exception of SLIX. Oldskool has acquired roughly seven hundred players since that time, but they've never been able to match their quantity with quality and have only won one playoff series in their history. Also, the Oranges have acquired every player from the "Homer At The Bat" Simpsons episode, if that's the kind of thing you like.

forzelt's Hill City Dinos are the league's pre-eminent Buddy Myer likers and proud Sodakhans. They are also, per the SuperDuperChallenge, one of the greatest teams in SL history! But according to SLXVII standings, not as much.

Pope's Chosen is another Mets gimmick team! But it's not by GenericGirlName! Instead its owner is ZenVulgarity, only half of which name is appropriate to a Mets fan. The Chosen had the bad fortune of finishing 2nd in the EC and thus tanking their draft position.

The Rochester Generics are the fourth team, alphabetically, in this division. kw0134 is the owner of this team.

Finally, DOOP has bestowed Yankeesfans.gif with a really cool name. I'm not necessarily convinced he's bestowed them with a great chance to win in the Subpar League. He did add some strong pitching in the draft, though.

Onward to the positions!

C
1. 1932 Bill Dickey / 1923 Bubbles Hargrave (HCD)
2. 1949 Yogi Berra (ROC)
3. 1998 Mike Piazza (POP)
4. 1994 Mike Piazza (FLA)
5. 1977 Brian Downing (YFG)

Catcher turns out to be one of the stronger positions in the division, with legitimate SuperLeague talent on every team. Hill City squeaks past the Generics' Yogi, who is a little young, largely because platooning him with Bubbles offers a stronger off day choice than Roy Campanella. Not that Campy isn't a decent backup C. Next we have a pair of Piazzas (the better-aged one first, of course), who I obviously like enough to have on my own team. Realistically, though, in stadia that aren't customized for power, their difficulty with defense and batting eye drags them down a bit. Finally, a lot of people pooh-pooh Brian Downing, but the dude is a very solid defender with enough skill at the plate to make him an okay, if unexciting, starter.

1B
1. 1995 JI
JIM THOME / 1996 Edgar Martinez (HCD)
2. 1998 John Olerud (POP)
3. 1910 Nap Lajoie (FLA)
4. 1938 Johnny Mize (ROC)
5. 2001 Jason Giambi / 1985 Jack Clark (YFG)

Now we start to get into the nitty gritty of why this division has so many question marks. Jim Thome is a second-division starter and Edgar Martinez is most valuable at 3B, but I still think their platoon manages to be the best in the division. A lot of people would rank Olerud first instead, but I'm fairly cool on him, and his extremely questionable performances in the last two seasons don't help matters. Conversely, I may be the biggest Nap Lajoie fan in this thread, but even I wouldn't be too happy with him at 1B; how has oldskool not managed to get anyone who actually belongs at this position? Johnny Mize marks the first of two times I'm going to urge kw0134 to change his lineup. kw, Mize is a platoon player at best, and you have an obvious partner for him in Harmon Killebrew. Seriously, Killebrew mashes lefties. (Killebrew owns.) I cringe at both halves of the Yankeesfans platoon, and putting them together hardly helps.

2B
1. 1935 Buddy Myer (HCD)
2. 1970 Rod Carew (ROC)
3. 1996 Roberto Alomar (FLA)
4. 1998 Carlos Baerga (POP)
5. 2003 Chase Utley / 1985 Tom Herr (YFG)

You know a division is exciting when the top 2B in it is Buddy Myer. But, seriously, Myer's quality defense and acceptable bat puts him clearly in first here. Carew is the only other 2B that I consider an acceptable SL starter. Alomar is one of those guys who ought to be good, but is too modern, and hence is basically an emergency starter type. Baerga has a non-zero chance to be playable, which is more than I can say for a platoon of the inexplicably-Mogul-hated Chase Utley and a guy I've literally never heard of.

Seriously. Who is Tom Herr?

3B
1. 1928 Jud Wilson / 1966 Dick Allen (HCD)
2. 1954 George Kell (POP)
3. 1970 Pete Rose (FLA)
4. 1949 Jackie Robinson (ROC)
5. 2001 Eric Chavez (YFG)

Hill City has a good infield! I have it on good authority that Jud Wilson (one of the greatest Negro League 3Bs) is a left-handed Dick Allen. As much as I'm tempted to put a Dick Allen/Dick Allen platoon in last place due to the abiding No One Wants Dick Allen principle, my love for platoons and general distaste of G. Kell are enough to keep them in first. That said, George Kell is a solid guy, and he could easily outperform the duo. Pete Rose had a great career but was a significant "compiler"; many of his records are due to playing for much too long. That said, his SL performance has been better than I expected. Jackie Robinson is a solid fielder, but his glove is wasted away from his natural 2B; I don't hate having him at third, but I wouldn't be happy with it. Eric Chavez, uh, well...maybe he won't be totally awful? But probably he will.

SS
1. 1982 Robin Yount (FLA)
2. 2003 Derek Jeter (HCD)
3. 2001 Miguel Tejada (YFG)
4. 1914 Honus Wagner (ROC)
5. 1956 Harvey Kuenn (POP)

Yount and Jeter are both kinda interesting SSes who I'd rather have on the bench than starting. Jeter brings more with the bat, but Yount is the better defender, and defense is the key at SS (especially with these rotations). DOOP gets out of the cellar with Tejada, who isn't a really strong SuperLeague SS but can get the job done. Rochester's Honus Wagner would be the class of the division, except he is approximately seventeen thousand years old. Fun fact: 1914 was one of two out of Honus Wagner's 21 seasons with an OBP+ below 114. Anyway, he'll probably die and/or be bad. Harvey Kuenn is terrible, come at me McD.

LF
1. 1917 Ty Cobb (ROC)
2. 1984 Rickey Henderson (FLA)
3. 1935 Heinie Manush (HCD)
4. 1993 Tim Raines (YFG)
5. 1982 Rickey Henderson (POP)

The top rank here is easy, since Ty Cobb is one of the SuperLeague's best outfielders. He's often used at CF, but his bat still plays at a corner. 1984 Rickey clocks in at 25 years old, which is just enough to typically get a prime rating. I'm more wary of the 23-year-old version, who clocks in behind similar speedy OFs Heinie Manush and Tim Raines. That said, 23-year-old Rickey could easily--either naturally or via the age bug--exceed either of those, especially the aging Raines.

CF
1. 1915 Tris Speaker (FLA)
2. 1935 Edd Roush (HCD)
3. 1949 Duke Snider (ROC)
4. 1958 Richie Ashburn / 1997 Bernie Williams (POP)
5. 2001 Johnny Damon / 1985 Willie McGee (YFG)

Prime Tris Speaker is the best player at any position in this division, and probably the sole reason oldskool's Oranges have survived this long. Edd Roush has a fairly small sample, but he seems to be a quality feeder with some upside at the plate. Snider is perhaps the better hitter, but not so great in the field. I would seriously consider putting Ty Cobb here if I were kw. Anyway, all those three are valid starting CFs. The last two teams, on the other hand, are utilizing platoons to try to disguise the fact that their CFs are bad. Ashburn/Williams from Pope's Chosen is the better platoon, since Ashburn at least is a superlative fielder. Yankeesfans' Damon/McGee platoon have nothing to recommend either half.

RF
1. 1932 Babe Ruth / 1919 Harry Heilmann (HCD)
2. 1937 Mel Ott (FLA)
3. 1943 Mel Ott (ROC)
4. 1986 Darryl Strawberry (POP)
5. 2001 Jermaine Dye (YFG)

Babe Ruth is 37 years old in 1932, but nevertheless is easily the best RF in this division. Forzelt is platooning him with a capable partner, Harry Heilmann, to try to preserve his health. Next are a pair of Mel Otts, who have actually been really shaky lately. The good-age one is of course above the aging version. I would strongly suggest kw0134 to platoon his Ott with Babe Herman, who is an underappreciated very good hitter. Neither Darryl Strawberry nor Jermaine Dye deserve to be more than minor league depth; Strawberry is marginally less likely to be an offensive black hole.

Bench
1. C 1949 Roy Campanella, 1B/3B Harmon Killebrew, UT 1949 Pee Wee Reese, OF 1927 Babe Herman, OF 1923 Ken Williams, OF 1970 Tony Oliva (ROC)
2. C 1970 Johnny Bench, 2B 2003 Mark Bellhorn, 3B 2003 Placido Polanco, SS 2013 Hanley Ramirez, OF 1931 Kiki Cuyler, RF 2003 Ichiro Suzuki (FLA)
3. C platoon, 1B platoon, 2B 2009 Robinson Cano, 3B platoon, OF 2008 Carlos Beltran, RF platoon (FLA)
4. C platoon, 1B platoon, 2B platoon, UT 2001 Craig Counsell, CF platoon, OF 1985 Luis Gonzalez (YFG)
5. C 1986 Gary Carter, 1B 1986 Keith Hernandez, 2B 2015 #28, SS 2004 Nomar Garciaparra, CF platoon, OF 2015 Yoenis Cespedes (POP)

As I've mentioned, two to three members of the Generics bench potentially deserve to start for kw. The Oranges' bench is all-around decent, though none of the talents there are particular standouts. There aren't many players on the other three benches that deserve to make a 25-man, so they're ranked based on their contribution to various platoons.

SP1
1. 1916 Pete Alexander (YFG)
2. 1912 Walter Johnson (ROC)
3. 1922 Pete Alexander (FLA)
4. 1906 Eddie Plank (POP)
5. 1963 Don Drysdale (HCD)

A prime Pete Alexander at the top of the rotation does a little to save the awful Yankeesfans offense. I might put a prime Walter Johnson above him, but kw's Big Train is slightly young at 24. I definitely prefer him to an old Pete, though the Oranges' ace is still quite strong. Eddie Plank is a step down from the godly deadballers, but I'd love to have him; I'm not so sure being a lefty helps him too much in this division, though. Meanwhile, here is the first of Hill City's first three Dons Drysdale. He's a reliable mid-century pitcher, but that doesn't make him a very exciting #1.

SP2
1. 1874 Candy Cummings (ROC)
2. 1992 Greg Maddux (YFG)
3. 2006 Roy Halladay (POP)
4. 1904 Cy Falkenberg (FLA)
5. 1968 Don Drysdale (HCD)

I'm a sucker for 19th-Century players, and Candy Cummings seems very promising. Greg Maddux and Roy Halladay are both fairly strong modern pitchers; I rate Maddux higher due to his superior pedigree. Cy Falkenberg is a fine pitcher, but like Forzelt's second Drysdale, he's not quite someone I prefer to see at SP2. Both ought to do a decent job, but are a step down from the top three here.

SP3
1. 1906 Chief Bender (FLA)
2. 1973 Steve Carlton (YFG)
3. 1927 Dazzy Vance (ROC)
4. 1956 Don Drysdale (HCD)
5. 1986 Dwight Gooden (POP)

After some very good pitching in the first two rotation slots, the starters are beginning to dry up. I'm a Chief Bender fan--perhaps not entirely unrelated to his name--so the deadballer comes in first for me. Steve Carlton isn't reliable, since he's a modern lefty, but he has some serious upside in a division with a lot of contact hitters. Dazzy Vance is the best name here, but by age 36 I have serious doubts about his reliability. We've finally reached a slot where Don Drysdale can shine, but Forzelt's offering is now a mere 19 years old. I'll still take him over a babe Dwight Gooden, though, since ZenVulgarity's pitcher isn't even SL quality in his prime.

SP4
1. 1976 Don Sutton (HCD)
2. 1920 Eddie Cicotte (FLA)
3. 1912 Hippo Vaughn (ROC)
4. 2001 Curt Schilling (YFG)
5. 2015 Jake DeGrom (POP)

Don Sutton contrinues the Dinos' trend of mid-century pitching, and is a fairly reliable 4th option. Eddie Cicotte is 36 and has not shown great results at that age. I'm tempted to rate him below Hippo Vaughn, who was very solid for my Bloggers, but Vaughn has been inconsistent. I'm rooting for Hippo to get a good sample of innings and show the league what he's capable of. Curt Schilling is getting old in 2001, and he needs to prove he can be great outside the confines of the Hope's Peak horrordome. Finally, ZenVulgarity hopes that DeGrom can be as good for him as for the 2015 Mets. Unfortunately, I have serious reservations about how his age and small-sample career will impact Mogul's treatment of him.

SP5
1. 1966 Jim Bunning (HCD)
2. 2015 Matt Harvey (POP)
3. 1918 Carl Mays (FLA)
4. 2001 Randy Johnson (YFG)
5. 1970 Luis Tiant (ROC)

Jim Bunning is just a guy, but as a 5th starter "just a guy" is a lot better than some alternatives. Matt Harvey is probably behind DeGrom in the Chosen rotation due to EC results, but EC results aren't trustworthy. I like Harvey and I want to trade for him. ZenVulgarity trade me the Harvey!! Carl Mays probably deserves to go higher here, but he's the definition of rando deadballer and I hate him. I'm also not really sold on the Oranges' infield defense, which is extremely important for his success. Randy Johnson and Luis Tiant are modern pitchers, with all the benefits and drawbacks that entails. Both are perfectly acceptable at #5, but I think Johnson is more likely to show something more than that.

Bullpen
1. 1970 Rollie Fingers, 1970 Rollie Fingers, 1995 Robb Nen, 1956 Hoyt Wilhelm, 1936 Curt Davis, 1966 Larry Jackson (HCD)
2. 2003 Mariano Rivera, 2005 Kerry Wood, 1985 Jeff Reardon, 2006 Pat Neshek, 1984 Dennis Eckersley, 1999 Wilson Alvarez (FLA)
3. 2015 Jeurys Familia, 1998 John Franco, 2015 Addison Reed, 1986 Jesse Orosco, 2015 Stephen Matz, 1955 Robin Roberts (POP)
4. 2001 Jason Isringhausen, 1985 Todd Worrell, 2001 Mark Mulder, 2002 Bruce Chen, 2001 Barry Zito, 2001 Tim Hudson (YFG)
5. 1970 Ron Perranoski, 1970 Tom Hall, 1948 Harry Brecheen, 1912 Nick Altrock, 1925 Wilbur Cooper, 1949 Don Newcombe (ROC)

The best bullpen is almost a straight toss-up between the Dinos and Oranges, as befits the two teams in the division who have had time to build depth. I like the Dinos' offering a little better because I think they go a little deeper with excellent names; Mariano Rivera isn't going to pitch as many innings as two nearly-as-good Fingerses. There are lots of interesting names in the Pope 'pen. I would probably start Roberts over DeGrom, in fact. DOOP has half the 2001 A's rotation in his bullpen, which is not really a great sign. But at least it's better than the Generic group, which is the very essence of the "afterthought" method of bullpen construction: throw out whoever seems best off your feeders and cross your fingers.

Standings
1. Hill City Dinos
2. Florida Oranges
3. Rochester Generics
4. Pope's Chosen
5. Yankeesfans.gif

The Hill City Dinos have the division's best infield and a solid outfield featuring a Babe Ruth. Their weakness is in the rotation, but they have enough solid arms there to make up for the lack of any exciting ones. It might not be easy, but the Dinos have what it takes to return to the SuperLeague.

The Florida Oranges have lived forever, but haven't managed to acquire much top-tier talent to complement their immense depth. Tris Speaker and a potentially-great deadball rotation could be enough to carry them to the division championship, or at least to Gauntlet survival, but I'm starting to drool a little bit at the prospect of a prime Tris in the next Dispersal Draft.

The Rochester Generics, true to their name, are neither great nor terrible. They have some fine pieces on both offense and defense, but just enough holes to make me doubt that they have a realistic chance at first place. That said, a few changes to their starting lineup could give them the firepower to surprise a few people.

The Pope's Chosen are a team of contrasts. Specifically, they contrast the few really interesting people available on a bunch of modern Mets teams with the remainder of largely useless pieces. ZenVulgarity has picked up a few nice hole-fillers in the offseason, but I just don't think it's going to quite come together for him. That said, some luck in the SuperDraft could make the Chosen very interesting for the latter half of the season.

Yankeesfans.gif has a really exciting top of the rotation, but the rest of their team is simply chock full of holes. I think this team will pick high in the SuperDraft for sure, but unfortunately it's hard to see even a Babe Ruth solving their offensive problems. To have a chance, they're going to need to get some real standout performances from their modern starters Maddux, Carlton, Schilling, and Johnson.

Hypothetically, but I wouldn't design it that way. Different players have different use-cases, so trying to define a value of "better" between, say, Cy Young and Pedro Martinez, or Troy Tulowitzki and Ross Barnes would require a lot of different factors to be accounted for, whereas trying to find the better Roy Halladay out of two is a much simpler idea, which also wouldn't need to account for things like stadium effects (if a stadium makes one Roy Halladay bad, it makes both bad, and finding the less worse one doesn't matter at that point). If you really want to differentiate between any player, you'd have to account for:

1) Every player on your team (pitching needs defensive information to be judged properly, lineups need your pitching staff to be judged properly as to their defensive value)
2) Every player on the opposing team (so, for instance, taking flyball pitchers against the Zephyrs is a safe call since my team doesn't hit dingers anyway)
3) Stadium effects (though only the extremes such as the Mexicutioners' stadium or the Ultimate Despair Dome have real effects that you would want to account for)

And that's on a per-game basis.

EDIT: And of course, this is all based on Mogul ratings, which are a faulty statistic to begin with.

Hypothetically, out of a set of Jobas/Halladays/whatnot given to the function. It's a very narrow system, but it's a very narrow use-case to start with - that being a Week 0 situation where somebody has two clones rated the same overall and decides to make a lineup post referring to one of them as better than the other.

Not really, I'd only really be able to replace him in the minors with someone who'd rate in the mid-80s at best.

If you did, it would force McFreeze to either patch him onto your roster via the imperfect method, or else have to rebuild the entire save file, which would cause a re-roll of everyone's ratings, and for McFreeze to have to re-input basically everything. So, I'm going to give a firm no to that request.
