Not in Texas it's not. We don't pay out unused vacation or sick time when someone leaves.

Totally depends on the state because that isn't covered by the feds. In Texas they are only obligated to pay for 3 days of PTO that is unused.

Salary workers in a non-management roll get no overtime, even at 60+ hours a week.
No mandatory minimum allotment of maternity leave at all for mothers. We are the only first world country ON EARTH to not have this.
No mandatory minimum allotment of vacation days.
No mandatory minimum allotment of sick days either, and you can be fired for being sick.

For sure US labor laws could be better, but labor laws are a minimum, not a maximum. Just because someone can do something, doesn't mean that, in practice, they will.

Corporations will in general try to gently caress over the worker as hard as they can if they can get away with it. That's why the government SHOULD set the minimum to benefit all of society.

Look, businesses need to have this kind of flexibility in order to compete. Government mandates make it impossible for struggling small businesses to survive in this competitive environment.

Interesting note:
At the meeting I was referring to earlier, one of the only business owners to speak in favor owned a small independent bookstore.

His primary competitor is Amazon.com, and he's somehow figured out how to pay sick leave.

I really don't understand some of the situations where these are in effect.

It must be that over half of the voters are actively voting for policies that obviously hurt them, possibly the people who need the help the most, given they are rampant in the poorer regions of the US.

Is it really still just the Red Scare being alive and well?

It's pretty amazing to watch from the outside, seeing stuff in the US, because you're spot-on, it's like they're voting for policies that will directly hurt them. I don't get it!

Breaks are not mandatory by law in many states. Idaho for example doesn't even have to provide you with any breaks at all for any period of work.

The people don't get to vote for these things. The people we vote for do. It's a pretty neat system for people who proffit off of it. Its almost impossible to prevent in the modern era of elections.

You get them by the balls and don't let go.
My first IT job gave me a 3 months severance (presumably) because over my course of employment I gained enough knowledge about the company to be able to leave and just create my own competitor, steal all their clients, and I never signed any sort of contract saying otherwise.

I appreciate the sentiment here, but it doesn't really address the problem. In IT particular it really is possible to get "get better" but not every industry has that luxury.

This sort of FYGM mentality where you solve the problem for yourself doesn't fix the obvious systemic issue.

Chiming in as another Canadian, some of the US policies look really strange from the outside. However, I am far from an expert on the subject; just tossing in some agreement on an outsider's perspective.

I guess people don't get fired from jobs in places outside the US because employers are too burdened by the laws requiring them to pay out worthless candidates if they do? An employers only hope after hiring someone is that they find another employer to screw over and leave?

I honestly can't tell if you're joking or not. If you're not, no, people get terminated outside the US all the time. The employee is just treated with respect when doing so, and labour laws are adhered to. When they're not, employment standards/labour boards or even the courts step in and ensure the former employee is fairly compensated where required.
