Guys, I'm just posting to say that I got over the initial hump in the learning curve where your just banging your head on a smooth stone wall and griping about the UI, and I'm now at the point where I'm banging my head on an engraved stone wall and griping slightly less about the UI.

Gnomoria helped me a lot. If you haven't tried it, it's basically a teaser for Dwarf Fortress. It lacks depth and is a great case against isometric views, but it uses similar concepts and serves as a basic intro to the fortress-style games.

Anyway, after basically having everything built in that game and losing interest, I tried DF again, and it makes a lot more sense and is a lot more interesting.

I'm a convert.

Yesterday I started a new game, which was going fine until the first caravan from the mountainhomes arrived and promptly made my trading post BURST INTO FLAMES :psyduck: I chalked it up to a freak accident. But today I started up another new game, and the same thing happened! First caravan, BOOM fire loving everywhere. Why is this happening??

I checked the tracker and there's a new-ish "traders bring magma in bags" bug, so that might be it. I'd suggest generating a new world and seeing if it happens again.

In my quest to find a challenging embark I chose the middle of a terrifying forest. Eyestalks grow out of the ground and horrifying mucus rains down from the sky. Immediately after the embark I was greeted with a message that a Roc had made this area his lair.

Not surprisingly within moments of unpausing my woodcutter was killed when a log fell on him (it must have fallen atop another tree) and I have lived in peace ever since.

Gnomoria is, and always will be poo poo. It's not a stepping stone, just a pile of trash to be avoided. Pointing someone who is skeptical of DF at that is as likely to scare them off of the entire gametype than it is to usher them down the hole.

Getting back to bugsy stuff after the New Year. What have we got... some of the fighting in towns was caused by goblin performance troupes attacking people they didn't recognize. So that's stopped. I fixed holes in the ground caused by former trees in the town. And I started the reputation update with an easier case, hunting beasts. People recognize your accomplishments much better than before. Next up, the more difficult case of bandits.

Is there a way to see the various instruments that have been generated in a world? The only way I know is making all the workshops and seeing what I can assemble, and even then the description is liable to cut off unless I spend time actually making the instrument, and even then I'm only seeing the instruments for dwarves of my civilization. Is there another way?

the only way i've figured out how to find them all is by going to the manager screen, adding a new task, and searching for "assemble".

So many off-by-one diagonally placed items. If they did a 60 degree elevation isometric instead of 45 it would be easier to deal with.

After six deaths, three maimings (including a severed hand), and one bard stuck behind a wall forever, our national weretapir nightmare is over. Fortunately the surviving infected bard was a long-term resident so he'd respect burrow assignments, unfortunately when I was trying to wall him in the masons repeatedly got themselves stuck on the wrong side of the wall. Apparently the "dwarves won't stand on suspended constructions" method of getting masons to behave doesn't seem to work anymore and with the full moon fast approaching fast the only good location I could put a wall was at the entrance to my fresh new quarantine wing. The bard-tapir now gets plenty of space to himself.
He'd be more comfortable in his new digs but the jerk went and smashed the bed. Not even when he was a monster. He smashed it after untransforming, just for kicks.

The history generation phase chugs painfully when I try to make a new world. I can get about 120 years in on a medium world before the program becomes unresponsive. I guess I'm stuck playing in the Age of Myth for a while.

Since adding dfhack, I haven't received any citizenship/residence petitions. I'm not sure if these things are related to each other or not. I am getting more uninvited guests though! It's kind of out of the blue since I haven't uncovered any more subterranean squares in a while.

Related: Thunderdome's prompt this week is a 1,200 word story based on glitches tweeted from @thestrangelog. That includes lines culled from Toady's dev log. Sign-ups close Friday, story deadline is Sunday night. If you want to give it a shot, read the prompt post and sign up.

Dunno, I'm running the latest version w/ DFhack and the petitions are going fine for me... It might just take a while for you to get people interested in actually staying permanently. iirc my first real petition didn't happen until at least 1-2 years after the tavern was built.

And yeah just do a small world unless you plan on adventuring through it (even then though). Goes way faster.

I feel even adventuring is more fun in a small world where I can make sense of what's happening. The downside being that some things may not even exist. I don't think there are any necromancer towers in my current world, and the titan that just stopped by and died was apparently the last megabeast, sending my world into the Age of the Goblin. (Forgotten beasts still exist.)

I was getting petition spam before I added dfhack, now I'm getting nothing and it's been about two years. No mass casualty events either, so I'm not sure what gives

Definitely going to try generating a small world now though. Hopefully it doesn't hang.
