A lot, other than random games against the Packers and Steelers.

No, he's right in that a city was responsible for a lot of it when you're going back a few years. The city was going through a pension crisis and the recession, political instability and really awful mayors throughout the 2000s.

However, he has flatout refused to negotiate anything ever since Mayor Faulkner was elected, who has been the one mayor who has seemed committed to trying to keep the team here. The Chargers flatout walked away from the table last June and haven't been back since.

I just don't see why the city should have to pay for the stadium, period. LA isn't going to pay for the Carson stadium, why should cities like SD who are too broke to fix potholes shovel cash into Spanos' pockets? SD has had its issues in the past 15 years with the pension crisis and lovely leaders, and now that they seem to be turning a new leaf, a billionaire comes in and demands a bunch of cash. If that's how the NFL works these days then good riddance. It's been like this for quite a while and to be honest I'm glad someone stood up to them and called their bluff.

If somehow, someway Spanos would have gotten the downtown site he was originally wanting, would that have changed anything in this whole mess? They'd absolutely stay if they got the downtown stadium. Unfortunately that was never ever going to happen.

I don't doubt that Spanos wanted to keep the team here. Most people would have moved the team to LA years ago. He's just convinced that there's no way anything is going to happen, and with Kroenke initiating all this eighteen months ago, he can't waste time trying to deal with the new mayor.

Mark doesn't have 500 million period. Seems to me the best case in that situation would be the Chargers and Rams going to LA, with owners then coming together to help the Raiders add more funds to get a deal in Oakland, where the Raiders sell tickets fine and where their brand works. Remember the Raiders are really starting to look on the up and up, and in 2001 they were 6th in attendance, and they were 2nd in attendance in 2002.

If the Chargers are spending 550 million to relocate, the NFL would make sure they get theirs. Kroenke obviously wants sole control of a Rams only stadium in Inglewood, but he's not going to get it, so concessions are going to have to be made. There isn't going to be 2 stadiums built in LA, especially since Inglewood would be way nicer and would make the Chargers second class citizens anyways.

Also I really doubt that the 550 million dollar relocation fee is gonna be one big lump sum. It'll probably be paid off over 20 years. Every NFL owners gets like 190 million dollars a year just for TV revenue, so let's not pretend like Mark Davis is in poverty.

He's threatening to do that, but the NFL circumvents the whole problem if Kroenke gets his stadium, and Kroenke saves himself the trouble if he agrees that the Chargers get their fair slice.

While we're talking about this, remember davis offered to put up $500M for a stadium in oakland. The League has this kind of money. It could float bonds for new stadiums, it just sets a bad precedent when they're trying to squeeze the same money free out of the taxpayer.

The Chargers really didn't try that hard to get a new stadium-

1. A 2003 proposal to redevelop the Qualcomm site had drawings and a conceptual $400M financing outline: Chargers to pay half for free land.

2. An offer from National City for the team to develop 52 acres controlled by the Port and railroad that collapsed with no formal team plan.

3. A study of land in Chula Vista paid for by the Chargers that found two possible stadium sites but involved no formal team financing plan.

4. Discussion of building a stadium and office space in Oceanside, an idea that doesn’t pencil out and thus never includes a financing plan.

5. A suggestion from a national developer to build an Oceanside stadium and shopping center, all together now, with no team financing plan.

6. The possibility of buying a bunch of land in Escondido in 2009 to cobble together a stadium site, which quickly falls apart with no plan.

7. A plan hatched in 2009 to transform several East Village sites, including an operating busyard, into a stadium built with team/NFL$400M.

8. The 10th Avenue Marine Terminal site plan pushed most publicly by then-U-T ownership in 2012 without support from city or team officials.

9. Public officials’ new Mission Valley idea, which the team met with opposition, refusing to negotiate let alone consider a financing plan.

So, one plan 5 years after they signed a 20-year lease and half right after the worst financial crisis in recent history. And no negotiation with the current mayor. Also, Oceanside, Escondido, etc are not part of the city of San Diego.
