That was, at least, not a joke that treated rape as a punchline. They could have used any other terrible fate as the punchline and maintained the joke of "PCs are uncaring bastards who only care about their pocketbooks". But instead of acknowledging that rape is a touchy subject to use in any punchline, they doubled down that "RAPE JOKES ARENT TABOO YOU SJWs" and cemented themselves not as lovely comedians, but instead shifty people. Also they actually illustrated a Dickwolf in response

The joke is that they've found a fountain of regular-rear end water, but unable to cope with the fact that the Fountain of Youth doesn't exist and they're on a fool's errand, Cortez's assistant makes up some bullshit to try and assuage his boss' disappointment. It's a pretty clever commentary on the Enlightenment and the dawn of scientific thought.

Rolo posted:I've seen this a hundred times and I'm convinced that I'll never get it. It's the fountain of doubt because drinking from it gives you a sense of doubt as to whether or not it is a fountain of doubt or whether such a thing exists. It is probably actually regular water, but the fountain of doubt is something of a parody of the kind of logic that drives conspiracies and other things where a lack of proof is proof in and of itself. But the main joke is really just equivalent to saying, "if you drink this, it will have a magical effect" "I don't feel anything" "the magical effect is that you don't feel anything" "I think I would feel something if it were magic" "but you didn't and that's the point"

I never felt the original comic was tasteless, really. Every mission like that in an MMO is "Help get everyone out of Terrible Situation", but because it's a game it's "Help five people out of Terrible Situation, then run off to let the rest experience Terrible Situation for all eternity". Like, I kinda get being upset over it, but not to the degree folks did.

If he'd issued a " lol, sorry, not sorry" half-aplology and then completely dropped it, it wouldn't have been a big deal. Instead, he doubled down, backtracked, tripled down, then tried to drop it.

As a general thing, though, I must admit I'm doubtful of the "it wouldn't be a big thing" part of it, because my vague recollection of the events leading up to it was that the apology they initially issued wasn't enough for those upset by the original cartoon. And if it's not done maliciously, if the folks who were offended won't accept your apology, going a degree-or-two harder over the thing isn't that bad. But like I said, I barely remember the details after a certain point , so I'm prolly accidentally backing up some Hitler-did-nothing-level actions. No one really minds the frame of the joke. Using rape is a bit tasteless, but whatever it's perfectly within PA's wheelhouse so it was a bit surprising to see so much pushback. The problem was always in Gabe's inability to just say "I'm sorry you feel that way" and leave it alone. Dude's a classic example of someone whose one noteworthy technical skill allowed them to progress way further than someone of their mental and emotional development ever should have progressed.

If there's nothing really wrong with the comic in the first place, why is a non-apology like that something that he's (morally?) obligated to give? You misread. The frame of the joke about MMO NPCs is perfectly benign. The rape aspect is tasteless but nothing too unusual for PA. That's not saying there's nothing really wrong with the comic. I don't think anyone is saying that is the morally/ethnically/whatever right move. They're saying that they could have avoided the problems they faced if they did that, which is true. If they'd managed to let it drop gracefully than only a small handful of people would have really cared that the comic that regularly makes rape jokes made another rape joke.

That is not what happens in The Wizard of Oz, book or film. There is a con man, but in one he exists in the same world in which fairies are definitely real and in the other he doesn't invent the fairies, they're just a dream Dorothy has. And within the dream, the wizard is a fraud, but the witches are real.

No one asked for an apology for the comic. Gabe saw this and went nuclear on twitter, and then posted the whiny response comic, threw twitter tantrums some more, riled up his fan base to harass the blogger, and on and on and on. That's what people think he should have apologized for, since "not doing it in the first place" is apparently impossible because of how he got bullied in elementary school.

When Jack Thompson, or a greeting card company tries to shut them down, we all enjoy an angry rant telling them to gently caress off. Child's Play was basically started just to spite a reporter who wrote an article about videogame violence. When it's a bunch of rape victims it's not so funny. He spent years refusing to back down an inch and it finally came back to bit him. You can't really blame Gabe for the community response. Gamergate types don't need to be riled up to start harassing women.
