Britain did, yes. America built British engines like the Sapphire under licence; they didn't catch up until at least the 50s. Same with the Soviets since Rolls-Royce was dumb enough to sell them a few which the Soviets promptly reverse engineered.

Edit: Also, uh, Stalin was 8 years in the grave when Gagarin went into space.

Financial Times is reporting that the stock trading ban is to be extended:

quote:

China is to extend a ban on stock sales by large shareholders until permanent rules to restrict such sales take effect, as authorities seek to calm market fears over the lock-up that was due to expire on Friday.

China’s blue-chip stock index, the CSI 300, tumbled 7 per cent on Monday, raising the prospect of a return to the panic selling of last summer when the main index was down 45 per cent at one stage. Analysts blamed Monday’s fall on fears over the impending end of the ban, which was imposed in early July.

Chinese stocks, much like China itself, can only gloriously rise upwards, soaring towards the heavens.

I wonder how long until people stop buying shares and they start being forced to.

They're going to slow down to Brazil-like mediocrity and it won't be dramatic enough to force any kind of dramatic, face-losing critical re-analysis of the China's Going to Rule the World narrative, the pundits will just quietly shuffle off to the next Oriental Superpower to start hyping up and pretend these last 20 years never happened

Were you all the same people predicting the collapse of the US economy in '07?

Thinking the Chinese economy will slow down to Brazil levels shows a bit of ignorance, no? China's economy will slow down, then restart (albeit at not nearly the incredibly pace of the Jiang/Hu years. Further down the road, it will experience a down turn and then the economy will restart again.

Why does it seem like so many people who have studied China, its economy, and its culture have this fantastical hatred towards it?

Oh c'mon. I'm an eternal optimist and even I agree that China is in for some rough turbulence, economically, socially, and politically. And no, it's not the rosiest of pictures right now. But the constant, repetitive, and uncreative circle jerk that "China is hosed", the country is doomed, the economy will fail etc etc is hyperbole. Maybe the hyperbole and fantasy is sarcastic and simply going over my head? Help me out here.

Because China is at the center of the 'West in decline' and more importantly the 'Liberalism in decline' narratives, about how the future belongs inevitably to illiberal strongmen with 5000 years of essentialized, clash-of-civilizations style culture behind them. I don't agree with that, and I think the narrative itself is very dangerous because it lends credibility to illiberal regimes. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy in a way. I think if/when China goes to Brazil-like mediocrity it will be very awkward to look around the room of pundits and commentators and see just how many of them were nearly jizzing their pants in excitement over the death of liberal democracy

They have extended the banning of selling of more than 1% of shares by another 3 months, so it doesn't end tomorrow as expected.
