That Works posted:I figured. Was just remembering many of your fun posts about everything from reel to reel players and mIRC use on XP clients or worse. When I went to MEPS the first time one of the MOS options I had was 'data somethingorother' for the Army. In the description of the job one of the things was 'changing reel-to-reel computer tapes'. This was back in 93. When I to my sub which had one of the most advanced sonar systems we had in 95, the mainframes running it was a pair of 8086 RISC towers that were about 8 feet tall and watercooled. A lot of that old solid state poo poo is still in use because it works under really lovely conditions and is easy to maintain, and also the fact that it just works.

I only worked with newer equipment and software in my job, thankfully. It was nice being able to google problems when our systems NCO would demand one of us younger dudes use our extensive gaming knowledge to magically fix the phones or the recorder or the LMR controller or whatever. But on the other hand, obscure proprietary software running on Windows 7 means there's like 40 different reasons our phone recorder or whatever would randomly crash and wipe the config files, which made me wish sometimes we really did use some ancient piece of poo poo with a 30 pound detailed manual.

MikeCrotch posted:Hasn't slat armour been around since WWII? Kind-of. The Germans used spaced armour to defeat AT rifles, not bazookas and the Russians famously used bedframes as protection from Panzerfausts. However, the fuses in WWII HEAT rounds were actually pretty lousy and were enhanced by having a standoff range to form a jet at a more optimized distance. Slat armour as used in Afghanistan was more designed to break up RPG warheads than to defeat the HEAT effects. Frosted Flake fucked around with this message at 21:16 on Jan 8, 2016 |
