Lesser shows could have padded it out by showing Shinji struggling for another minute or two but the actual operation on screen goes just as quickly as they implied. It's all those small details that really make the monster of the week segments unique.

I love how there's no real pattern to the Angels, sure a disproportionate amount of them attack from the sea but you know sometimes you find one in a volcano or it just somehow appears in orbit....

so in the first few episodes rei's eva is orange, but now it's blue is it ever explained why this is (upgrades? repairs?) or is it just so she can better contrast with asuka

Episode 12 feels like the pivot from mostly being monster-of-the-week sci-fi action with the characters' motivations in the background to a show dealing primarily with its characters, and oh yeah there are robots. Flashback, conversation, and nonverbal interaction were drawn out, and robot action was compressed. I suppose it's a pivot rather than a deviation only because I (vaguely) recall what's coming up, though.
