I haven't logged into TFF since the games came on yesterday. Is the general consensus that the referees were complete garbage and gave the game to the Steelers? I can't remember the last time I saw a game that poorly officiated.

The best thing the NFL could do would be to stop playing each other for a couple of seasons. I know that isn't plausible though. No it's that Vontaze Burfict is literally the dumbest person on earth because he intentionally lowered his shoulder to try to kill a guy on an incomplete pass, when any person with a brain would realize this would be a penalty and lose his team a playoff game. Oh yeah, also he intentionally hit another player in the head destroying him, but I guess that's ok because a Steelers guy (inadvertently) did the same thing earlier in the game. The only thing I agree with Bengals fans on is that that definitely should have been a penalty too, but comparing the hits on how flagrant they were and I don't know how you can't say the one that looked like a normal tackle attempt and just happened to destroy a guy isn't a lot less obvious to the refs than the one where a guy lowers his head to come in and hit a completely defenseless guy.

You can question whether or not the officiating gave the Steelers the game, but the bottom line is that the Bengals lost that game on their own and they deserved it. Shazier definitely should've been flagged for his hit on Gio, Burfict should have 100% been flagged for his hit on Brown, and you can debate the flag on Jones at the end. Don't fumble the ball with 1:30 to go after a huge pick. Don't earn yourself a reputation for being a shitbag and maybe those calls go the other way. Also, gently caress Joey Porter and the Steelers forever.

I think adding a minor unsportsmanlike penalty (say, 5 yards no automatic first) would give refs a useful tool to help prevent games from getting out of hand. There were a TON of late-ish hits, post-play shoves, etc in this game (by both teams) at least back to the Steelers' first FG drive. But I think the enormity of an unsportsmanlike call makes refs unwilling to flag the little things. So they let it go, and things continue to escalate because every retaliatory shove is a little harder than the last. I know they give warnings, but assessing some minor penalties when that poo poo starts might be a better way of letting the players (and coaches) know that it's time to stop acting like chucklefucks. I also think major, safety related penalties (a fuzzy category, maybe just start with head stuff) should be reviewable and agree with the guy who said the NFL should be able to eject guys for egregious poo poo seen on replay, even several plays later.

Look at the gif. The idea that Gio wasn't defenseless is insane. Defenseless shouldn't be measured via "steps," because Gio's back is turned to Shazier until moments before Shazier lowers his head and drills him. It doesn't matter how many steps he took.
