Yes, Western Turkey's total fertility rates tend to be around or below the replacement rate (~2.1), so the pattern you see is not that unusual given significant internal migration movements, which evidently are still happening. You see the same thing going on in Romania and Bulgaria, the process of urbanization is still continuing, but due to lower fertility and a lack of immigration, the overall picture is more blue.

I think the stay-at-home phenomenon in Southern Europe is more due to the weak economy and high youth unemployment. If you don't have a job, you're going to have a hard time moving out even with 'reasonable' housing prices.

There's still a cultural element to it, though. The Nordic countries' economies aren't so much better that it would explain the difference.

Japan's Twitter, actually. And I'm not sure if they counted LINE as a social networking service, and whether it's bigger than Twitter in Japan.
|
# ? Jan 11, 2016 00:37 |
Well, I have no idea what they did, but it is a social network for sure and 2014 survey suggests that LINE dominates the market. Twitter forecasts expect 30.1m Twitter users by 2018, which would put it 19% below 2014 numbers for LINE.

Are some of these Eastern European countries just going to be completely hosed 10-20 years down the line, when they have a whole bunch of retirees and no younger generation to support pension payments, etc? It looks like it will be bad even on the personal level, since I imagine many of these retirees will have no adult children to help them out.

Yeah, basically everyone outside of France has sub replacement fertility rates. Eastern Europe is actually better than some other nations though: % of population over 65, as of 2010.
