"Moonage Daydream" fascinates me in particular because the version that appears on Ziggy is a fix-up of a song he did while he was messing about with Arnold Corns. Writers do a disservice to artists like Bowie, and their listeners, when they act as if their influence came out of some ineffable void. He was interested in all kinds of stuff and a lot of his work is the result of a melange of influences that he tinkered with and adapted to different purposes.

Fuckin hell, with Lemmy and now this it's turning into a really poo poo-tier year for my personal music heroes. I have to echo the comments that 6Music have done an excellent job of paying him tribute all day. If you looking for something to listen to, everything from the breakshow onwards is all Bowie. I only owned Ziggy but I happened to pop in to the supermarket on the way home and while they didn't have Blackstar, he was artist of the month and I picked up Low, Hunky Dory and Diamond Dogs.

You can also see these weird assumptions when it comes to the characters that Bowie supposedly played. Ziggy Stardust was definitely a character he invented with a pretty solid concept and a character arc. He wrote that character and then played him, he introduced songs in concert as having been written by Ziggy, etc. Now, when it comes to "The Thin White Duke," I'm 90% sure he did not sit down and write a narrative arc about who that guy was and what he was about, there were just some vague concepts about a fascist leader in an apocalyptic Europe going on in his head when he was touring for Station to Station. I've read stuff where people tried to say that Halloween Jack was a character he played, and Halloween Jack's traits are "well he styled his hair this way and wore sunglasses and played with a skull on stage." I'm weird in that im REALLY into late era-Bowie, mostly Heathen and onwards. And the old stuff -- I can generally listen to everything hit wise and known - but the deeper stuff takes a few listens, always been that way. Unsure why this is. I adore the man tho.

Man, I'm hearing new things in these songs that I didn't notice before, things that would later influence other songs. Like Gorillaz' Clint Eastwood uses almost the exact same melodica tune as Station To Station.

One of my favorite things about Bowie is how I never listened to one of his albums, but yet still stumbled upon great song after song on a yearly basis. Beyond videos on MTV in the nineties there's stuff like Somebody Up There Loves Me in GTA: San Andreas, Cat People in Inglorious Basterds or Crystal Japan because Trent Reznor accidentally turned it into A Warm Place (or is Lost In Translation to blame?). I don't know what lead me to Warszawa, but that was a good day and there are dozens of examples of me discovering songs like that. I do own the DVD of the Reality tour, but I'm not sure I ever watched it. I guess I was just satisfied in the knowledge that there was always more out there and I could stumble on it when I'd least expect it. I changed that today with Blackstar. It's weird to start at the end, but that somehow was fitting. I saw him live a few years ago and can't be rightly convinced he wasn't being operated by an elaborate system of levers and pulleys at the time. And he didn't sound all that great either. It took him at least 4-5 songs just to warm up. Thunder on the Mountain fuckin' rocked though. And Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. Pretty much any of his new material that's all in the same key the whole song was okay.
