Yeah, you're going to need to run the last 1/3rd of the dungeon a few times, but that is contrast to visiting one of the rooms in the Everfall, using godsbane until you get what you want, then never entering that room again.

This is from a couple pages back, and yes, this. I REALLY appreciated the Conan vibe. It really benefited the game to not simply devolve into yet-another-Tolkein-esque high fantasy derivative. I mean, DD is derivative no matter how you slice it, but that borrowing from Earthly mythology for most of did DD a lot more favors than borrowing whole sale from the same fiction source that everyone defers to. Nothing wrong with Tolkein. Just... poo poo. There's other fantasy stuff out there.

Magick Archer isn't all that great during the base game. The damage feels pretty anemic. Once you start digging into the Bitterblack Isle stuff later on though, MA becomes the strongest class in DD. Most notably, they have a skill that repeatedly ricochets off nearby walls which is insanely powerful in BBI's tight quarters. Also be aware that all of your bow skills as a Magick Archer automatically target and home in on enemies. Whether this is a good thing or a lame thing is up to you. I like it when I'm feeling lazy.

a good plan for magick archer is to play mostly magic-focused regular classes through the main game (i personally always do bitterblack in ng+ because by then you're a good level for it and i like having the ur-dragon in easy reach for wakestone farming) and then after you get to gran soren in ng+ switch to MA.

Ah, that's good to know. I'm going to play this on a 360 controller and I'm garbage at manually aiming with a joystick so I think homing arrows are right up my alley. I'll probably decide to switch back and forth between that and MK, so I'll likely decide which suits my playstyle more then.

continuous min-max sidenote: this is not necessary. You can play from level 10 onwards as a MA and your life won't suck [maybe hard if your gear isn't good but not that big a deal]. You should probably dip into another class here and there for augments, but thats recommended because everything is fun!

Like honestly this thread makes me want to rage because there's no need to play anything you don't want to play. You might have to chow down on an extra periapt to kill a boss in super duper hard mode ten seconds slower but ffs.

You don't have to worry about that. The chests respawn indefinitely, every 3 in-game days, which can be readily advanced at a bed. People are just typically frustrated by not getting what they want from RNG. It is a plenty legitimate frustration, but the game doesn't really bar you from anything. The only real exception I think worth mentioning is one potential romantic interest, but that fits pretty nicely into the NG+ category of things you might want to try differently on a replay, which progress extremely smoothly because of the way the fast travel mechanics work.

For those interested in ducking into BBI early to grab the +50% Discipline ring, I dug up my guide in the old thread on how to get to it.

e: poo poo, some of the map links are thumbnails now... gonna have to update that

e2: updated guide:

Starting from Bitterblack Isle, head to Garden of Ignominy, then Duskmoon Tower.

Go downstairs and to the east into the Ward of Regret and make your way to Midnight Helix.

This is the hardest part, IMO - you've got to make it up to the top of the tower while dodging Gargoyles and fireballs. I seemed to get lucky and the Gargoyles didn't bother me except when I was on the side platforms, but keep an eye out. At the top is the Void Key.

Go back to Duskmoon Tower, and the north door downstairs can now be opened w/the key. This leads to Vault of Defiled Truth.

Sprint through there to the Gutter of Misery, then to Warrior's Respite.

In there you'll find the Moonbeam Gem, which you need for the door to the ring's chest.

Grab it, head back to Duskmoon Tower, head downstairs yet again, and the door you want to open is this one.

This is entirely awesome then. The only way I could see this game being my thing more is if it had randomized dungeons.

I feel you on this, although the game generally is really well designed so that each encounter is at least a relatively unique challenge. I would like a randomized dungeon simply for the sake of maintaining a vague sense of mystery or discovery, but it isn't quite that sort of game type. Still, one of the major complaints about the game is the static nature of the encounters. Once you have seen the 'open world' that's it. There is nothing new to surprise you. Even that same open world at night doesn't bring too much change, beyond the dark.

Others still (me) may not have been captivated because the classes can take a while to ramp up and fill into their niche; I was grabbed when I saw how different all of the classes actually are, and got to see what sort of fantasy archetypes they were meant to fill, and how BADASS they all felt as those archetypes.

There could be any other reasons, and it may be a combination of little things that take time to pile up before you're finally "wowed" by them as a whole.

This is the sort of game that generally grows on you, so even if you DO immediately like it, it may still be 30-40 hours down the line there is something waiting to really surprise you and won't let go.

I know exactly what you mean. The game was fun from the beginning, but it has a certain weirdness to it that can be off putting at first. But when I had to fight a Chimera in the middle of a forest at night, desperately hanging onto its back and really over my head I knew this game was for me. I really don't know why other games haven't stolen the climbing on enemies mechanic, its probably my single most favorite bit in the game.

The weirdness is a large part of the draw of the game for me personally. It's hard to explain exactly why, I just find it charming. It's why I don't go overboard with ludicrous character designs because it breaks the spell.

I'm definitely not turning off the pawn chatter, that's a large part of it. Although I'm glad there is the option, that means I'm free to steer my main pawn towards being more talkative and not cheese any prospective hirers off.

There's nothing required about that boss. If you get in a kill, you get some unique gear and probably an achievement. If not, you're not losing anything significant. Also it took a long time for the console version to get hard enough to require specific builds to get credit. Take your time.

The online ur dragons gear isn't THAT much better than stuff you'd get elsewhere, and you can get the achievement for beating it offline, so you'll be fine. In a few months he'll be harder, but grace periods should still be pretty often and doable for most classes.

Now that Bitterblack Isle is in the game, online Ur-Dragon isn't a big deal at all. Bitterblack weapons and armor are better than what you'll get from Ur-Dragon, so don't worry about it at all. Take your time and enjoy yourself.

And yeah, your best bet really is to just play the classes you want to play when you want to play them. Again, with Bitterblack weapons and armor, your base stats are... I mean, not entirely meaningless, but much less important than they seem. Strength and Magick are additive--that is, if you have 300 Strength and equip a weapon with 1000 Strength, it's 1300 Strength total. So, when you're thinking about whether it's worth it to min-max so you have 700 Strength instead of 500 Strength at max level, remember that there are swords with over 1800 Strength in the game. It's really not that big of a deal at all.

I will say that hardcore min-maxing can let you take on very difficult things earlier by virtue of being able to get over their damage resistance sooner--in other words, effective leveling can save you from a little level grinding later on, or make you very slightly less dependent on good equipment. But if you're doing Bitterblack Isle you're probably going to exceed level 100 anyway, and by that point, even staying in one class with lovely stat growth for the whole game won't hold you back at all.

Yes, chests respawn, and so do Bitterblack Isle bosses, I'm pretty sure on the same timer. And you can savescum in front of a chest--its contents are determined when you open it, so you can open it, then reload if you don't like what you get, and so on.

It also pays to wait until you have several pieces of Bitterblack Weapon/Armor/Gear to purify before you go purify, because the order in which you purify them can affect what you get by moving your position on the RNG table around. So you can purify them all and, if you don't like what you got, reload and do it in a different order, and get something different. There are guides online for determining where you are on the RNG table, too.

Quick caveat: this really is only going to be a problem if you're insistent on getting full sets of Bitterblack Isle armor. Weapons aren't so bad.

Bitterblack Isle is in a weird place. The early parts of it are easy enough that you can handle them pretty early on in the main game, but by about halfway through you're in endgame and harder difficulty territory. You can go there very soon after you start the game (as soon as you get your main pawn), so a lot of people finish the main game then do a New Game + and go straight to Bitterblack.

It's also difficult to define what endgame and post-game mean in Dragon's Dogma, but to elaborate any further would be something of a spoiler. I guess I can say this: by the time you feel like you're in the endgame, you're probably strong enough to go to Bitterblack Isle.

Yep, exactly. (Much bigger spoiler) I was enjoying the game up to the fight with Grigori, and then feel deeply in love during and after that fight. Goddamn Grigori is a good antagonist.

For people worried about respawning chests and poo poo in bbi, everything in bbi respawns immediately after you clear it so you can do it again iirc.
