Well, you are probably correct in your assessment. But remember, the thought here is that the patches are not to fix things overall, but to give the appearance of work and progress.

How many GBs do you all think this one will be?

It was supposed to be Arena Commander, FPS edition. In other words an arena shooter featuring all the gameplay for FPS in the same way that AC was for flight. Illfonic apparently had it mature to the point where they were less than a month from release before it just... disappeared. There was even a big zero-gravity arena similar to Ender's Game.

Here you go:

quote:

‘Star Marine is delayed indefinitely.’

First of all: the phrase ‘delayed indefinitely’ being bandied around is incorrect. We do not have a release date to announce yet, which is not the same thing. I’m aware that there is an ongoing sub-debate in which one poster will insist it is delayed indefinitely accompanied by the dictionary definition of indefinitely, and then the counter argument is that the phrase has a different meaning beyond the individual words. This counter argument is correct. ‘Delayed indefinitely’ is a games industry PR term for ‘cancelled.’ Anyone (and apparently this is a great many people) reading clickbait headlines will believe we’ve cancelled Star Marine. This is not the case, to the point that it implies the absolute opposite of what’s actually happening.

What is happening? The weekly updates from the team will give you a better idea, but the short story is that Star Marine was not ready for launch when we had hoped (and planned.) We spent several weeks expecting that resolving a then-current crop of blockers would allow a PTU publish. When this didn’t happen, we conducted a full review of the module lead by our top technical folks from around the company. What they determined was what you read in Chris’ letter two weeks ago: we need to rebuild several ‘boring’ backend pieces and we need to fix serious animation issues before there would be any benefit to a release.

It would not be my place to give you a timetable, but with the number of people I’m seeing who genuinely believe that we somehow now aren’t doing the FPS module I will say that we are talking about a delay of weeks and not months/years/decades. Certainly, I hope not to be pushing folks for weekly updates very soon. :) (And to answer the inevitable question: why don’t we give an internal target date right now? Because the worry is that we might find ourselves in exactly the same position when the current set of issues are resolved. We’re at a point in the process where we believe we know exactly what to do. We’ve already let you know what that is, we’re going to continue sharing the progress… and when that work pays off (or if it doesn’t) you’ll hear about it.)

Citizens will just say that they don't even need Star Marine now, because since you can walk around and occasionally shoot people at one specific location in the Universe tech demo that's even better than Star Marine and makes it unnecessary, because the Universe is Star Marine.

Laying on their back, being dragged by their feet
Laying on their stomach, being dragged by their shoulders

The player doing the dragging uses both hands to pull the wounded player.

That sounds a lot like looting and hiding bodies in the MGS2+ games. My question is more why this has to be described in such detail. It's as if they're trying to pad their feature list by including every variation as its own unique thing, when all it is is some contextual dragging a body.

Star Marine: Bringing crowdfunding to a gun fight

quote:

"Roberts is talking about Star Marine, the upcoming first-person shooter module for Star Citizen sim that’s currently, in purest mercenary terms, crowdfunding’s biggest funding success to date. We’re used to bold claims when it comes to crowdfunding, but this one stands out: “Best playable soldiers on the simulated Battlefield.

“Everything in Star Citizen has to be as good or better than anything out there,” Roberts says to the crowd. Thing is, there’s a difference between making a statement like that when you’re talking about spaceships and when you’re talking about the biggest genre in videogames. Before the crowdfunding revolution, and games like Elite: Dangerous and EVE: Valkyrie, the spaceship genre was, forgive the pun, an empty space. But being as good or better than anything out there as a shooter? That’s a levelling of the sights at the biggest games in the world. Everyone wants to be better than Call of Duty. But so far, at least commercially, everyone – even Battlefield – has failed.

“It’s not [a] Call of Duty or Battlefield imitation,” Roberts tells Red Bull, when we ask him point blank how he and his team aim to out-CoD CoD. “We’re going for a different FPS experience from the Call of Duty or Battlefield insta-respawn, rushing, quick combat, quick shooting set-up. We really want the players to be invested in their characters, so when they get into FPS combat it should be more meaningful. The idea is to be more in the direction of a game like Demon’s Souls, where your character and life mean more to you, so you don’t want to get killed.

“We want to make sure that the combat that you get in Star Citizen isn’t just a dumbed-down version of an FPS. We also want to make sure our FPS has its own personality.”

When I checked a few years ago, I noticed that technically I have like a 250gb limit on my Cox Internet service, but that might as well be unlimited even with Steam and Battle.net open all the time.

If CIG wants daily patches, 10gb per patch adds up real loving fast.

They don't have a proper patching tool and any change to a file necessitates downloading it again in it's entirety.

Edit: What this means is that when they add a bathroom door to a ship, they stuff it in the existing assets file. Since the patcher can't patch, the launcher downloads the entire 10gig assets file with the new door in it.
