Golden Bee posted:She's a Mary Sue because she's a new character who's better at everything (Fixing the Millennium falcon! Using force powers! Winning lightsaber duels! Flying spaceships! Infiltrating enemy bases!) than any of the previously established characters, and doesn't face a road of trials where she loses before getting better at things. She fixed the Falcon because she was intimately familiar with the changes made to it because she worked for the guy who stole it (the big junk trader dude). She was intimately familiar with the territory on Jakku because she'd been scavenging from the crashed Star Destroyer, and the guys she was flying against were brand new to the planet and used to open space flight. She didn't infiltrate a single enemy base though she was attempting to escape one she was taken to. She failed several times in her attempt to use force powers on a single stormtrooper before finally getting it right. She won a lightsaber duel against a guy who been shot in the side and already had a strenuous fight with another character and was also feeling tormented/wracked with guilt over the horrible act he'd just committed a few minutes earlier (which is probably also why she was successfully able to force pull the lightsaber to her when he was going for it at the same time). All these things are demonstrated in the movie through basic storytelling. If the movie has a flaw it's that it is such a straight rehash of New Hope (and many would say that is a strength) and doesn't really try anything new/innovative outside of having a female lead and a black male co-lead. Anakin in the dreadful first prequel was far more of a Mary Sue, Rey doesn't even come close. Golden Bee posted:On topic, CM Punk better do the GTS gesture after beating his first can. Agreed.

Honestly I feel like it was more pacing problems and what they apparently cut out of the movie that was the problem than how her character was written. She goes from thinking Jedi are a myth to being able to use complex force powers and holding her own with a guy trained in lightsaber dueling without ever having any training or knowledge of force powers at all. I can't help but feel like something got left out. That said, Finn holding his own against a force capable lightsaber user was sillier and that one Poe guy was the closest thing to a Gary or Mary Sue in all of Star Wars history so she does tend to get an unfair amount of criticism considering. But Star Wars doesn't tend to get much deeper than pro wrestling does so it's a little silly to expect anything other than the pulpy hero stories it always was meant to be.

This is true, though Poe is helped by being enormously charismatic. I do cut it some slack since Luke basically makes a one-in-a-billion shot at the end of New Hope simply because he listens to Obi Wan and puts his trust in the Force. Anyway, this is probably enough of a derail, and I blame CM Punk for not having had a fight yet. How dare he take his time and want to recover from injury

Kylo Ren was hosed up and Finn still barely survived and was barely a problem for Ren compared to how badly he was already bleeding. That poo poo was fine.

Great thoughts on star wars fellas. Anyways, Bruce Lee would have done great at point karate and fine at tkd, he would have been good but not great at modern no-clinch kickboxing, he would have struggled a lot with muay Thai, he self admittedly sucked poo poo at boxing and anything involving grappling. He didn't understand why boxers wouldn't engage in long series of blocks and parries and instead just kept punching him in the face Lee made some interesting and poignant observations on combat sports which was cool, but he was never primarily a competitor
