Are the springs/suspension on a NASCAR race car really soft enough that you could appreciably lift the car with just your foot like that?
|
# ? Jan 14, 2016 21:37 |
|
Well in that case you're helping the springs anyway, not working against them. You're also not going to be able to get away with a significant cheat that way, so lifting it a tiny bit with your foot might just do the trick.

Wouldn't a NASCAR run stiff springs to compensate for the tremendous downforce?

otaku69 posted:does he have his foot under the car lifting it to make it lighter to get through an inspection? No, they're measuring the height of the car and he's lifting it up to meet the template. holocaust bloopers posted:Wouldn't a NASCAR run stiff springs to compensate for the tremendous downforce? Not exactly, they want the car to be pushed down at speed (180+) usually as low as it can possibly go depending on the track. When the cars are static they typically look lifted with a ton of positive camber.

I may or may not be an administrator for a NASCAR group with some famous members, but that's not where I got that picture, so that's hilarious. e- consensus is Jr. is a goon but he lurks e2- Also the whole lifting the car thing is relative. It's probably only helping raise it a quarter of an inch, but lowering that cars nose a quarter inch, while behind a car going 180mph, might translate into 2-3mph in the draft. It's a hundredth of a second, and in a NASCAR race that's pole position to 4th place. Seizure Meat fucked around with this message at 05:32 on Jan 15, 2016 |

Also like I said, we're not talking a huge distance here. A half inch? A quarter? These are incredibly tight tolerances we're talking about, though with some margin of error built in. What he's doing is genius because it's just the right touch to do it. Nowadays the cars are measured on a huge cyborg looking laser jig, never happen today.

Yes, high downforce cars need stiff springs. In the f1 ground effect era they actually tested with no suspension because aero can be very sensitive to pitch and roll. So it becomes less about having the suspension work and more about keeping the car level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LFmWd2JkC8 "feels like it could be quicker" jamal fucked around with this message at 07:29 on Jan 15, 2016 |

Friend of mine did the aero design for Under Suzuki's S14 and they are going for a tsukuba track record this weekend (although I think they already have it). They had some engine issues at wtac and never got to do a fast lap so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Look at this loving thing!
