The takin used to be placed in Ovibovini with the muskox but there's evidence that it might belong with the sheep in Ovis. Cute and fluffy either way.goatface posted:Bovids but not bovines. The taxonomists who came up with those names needs a whack on the head.

Well most of them are long dead so that could be hard. Fancy Pigeons! Yes it's a painting not a photograph, I still think it is cute. I like the crazy feathered feet kind. Apparently Charles Darwin studied fancy pigeons as part of his research for his book on evolution

Taxonomy is fun because nobody can agree on how it should be done and most of the originating stuff was based on guesswork but is old enough that getting it changed in the wider consciousness is really difficult.

Look at this doofy looking babby birb: It's a cinereous mourner chick, and all that spotty floof serves a amazing purpose -- in the nest it will lay down and crawl to simulate the look of highly toxic worm to ward off predators.

I wish the cat I had as a kid did that. She didn't like wearing a collar and always managed to remove it. Eventually we just kind of gave up on putting one on her.

Alteisen posted:My kitten Luna's collar popped open somehow, she just brought over it in her mouth to me, dropped at it my feet then sat looking at me till I put it back. My former roommate's cat would use his little paws to grab the ID tag and pull so the safety snap would give and the collar would come off. Then he'd play with the collar and leave it...somewhere. We no-poo poo never found his original collar*. But he's a darter and black, so basically a ninja. He HAD to have a collar in case he got out, so my roommate got a harness, like you'd use to walk a cat on a leash. He decided he wanted to chew on it, but somehow got it caught in his mouth. He panicked and clawed at his face, then panicked even more and hauled rear end around the house, bleeding everywhere. My roommate arrived home to find trails of bloody pawprints up and down the hallway. * Months later, cat walked into the room where everyone was sitting with his original collar in his mouth like it tweren't no thang.
